Is dissatisfaction with the 17 common? I’ve already had one replaced ad this one is marginally better. Still having trouble writing on any medium. It’s as if some of the keys are faulty!

I played the lottery again. For the last time. I've had enough.
I've now had five(!) dark blue iPhone 17 PMs with 512GB.
The bottom line: two of them were externally damaged (one had a dent in the frame, the other one had a misaligned back panel). I didn't even bother turning on the one with the misaligned back. The other four iPhones all had LG panels (3 GVC and 1 GH3). The GH3 will be the keeper. It has the nicest and most uniform screen, compared to the others. And the least green tint when tilted forward.

It's simply sad what kind of devices Apple lets through quality control. My conclusion: if you want a uniformly white Samsung screen without any tint at any angle, you should definitely NOT order a PM, but a regular Pro. (Unfortunately, the Pro's screen is too small for me.)

Edit: attached some photos, the one in the middle is the GH3:

Middle looks in another league compared to the ones on the side.

Another GH3 winner, funny how that works out (but not universally) :p

I'm just curious, but did someone get their screen replaced at the Apple Store (not a phone replacement, but just the screen)? If so, what manufacturer came with the new screen? And what was the overall result, i.e., better or even worse screen? Thx

I'm finishing work early tomorrow and I'm going to the Apple Store (Germany, Düsseldorf) with my niece. She still can't decide between an Air and a regular iPhone 17.
(I'll take a closer look at the devices myself; I'm really curious... 😅)

Did you have to pay a $99 service fee for an express replacement? Thx
If you have AppleCare+, you shouldn’t be paying anything out of pocket. They’ll just place a temporary hold on your credit card for the value of the phone until you return your original device—that’s standard. I’ve done three express replacements this year, all with the same screen issue, but I kept the third one since it was the best of the bunch. All of them were manufactured in July, so I’m assuming another express replacement would come from the same batch. I’ll probably try again next year and hope for a different production run.

My exact experience as well. Even the July manufacturing date.

I'm quite happy with my GH3 17PM now. The other two iPhones (see pictures on the previous page) are being picked up by UPS tomorrow. Looking at them makes me cringe. They have such a red tint – especially when you hold them at a slight angle, which is what you usually do when looking at the display normally. I couldn't live with that red tint. I can manage with the slight green tint when tilting forward. Although, I should mention that my iPad Pro also has a GH3 – beautiful screen, but there's no green tint there…

I'm definitely looking forward to my visit to the Apple Store later and I think I'll only see similar screens to the ones I've already handled.

I received my 17 Pro Max some days ago. Seems to be an Samsung G9N Display. Had the same Samsung G9N in my old 15 Pro Max.

Both Displays are really beautiful.

BUT I’m getting really dizzy by just looking at the 17 Pro Max Display for less than 1 minute. Using it for some time (even after only 3 minutes…) it’s like I’m getting car sick really bad.

Never had something like this before… the 15 Pro Max was perfectly fine. Also I never had problems with MacBook PWM Displays or any other OLED PWM.

Someone else with this problem?

Hey guys, planning on buying a 17 Pro soon. What are the chances I’ll be getting a BOE panel?

Heard its mostly limited to China but I have seen outside China as well

accessibility -> color filter -> tint -> hue, move the slider to the right if you have LG, and to the left if you have Samsung panel.

How far to push depends on your panel and your preferance.

I think tweaking the tint helps a lot to, well, reduce the green/red tinting of the lottery

Heya'll , please try the color filter - tint - hue adjustment.

I have been using it for days, and i am liking it. It feels natural, i dont see any blown colors, it seems made to tune out the panel variances.

I’m just gonna leave it here:

More proof that there were never any BOE panels in these iPhones. No one here knows what these panel codes really mean. It could be just the assembly lines, not the panel manufacturers. This whole LG Display vs. Samsung Display nonsense here is laughable at this point.

So they never made it into any of the batches? Whats this J5V that's going around

I've read about this several times now from other users as well. Could it be due to the Liquid Glass in iOS 26? If you didn't have these problems with iOS 26 on your 15 PM, then your only option is probably to return the device. Something seems to be configured incorrectly.

I went in a Big Apple Store in my City and checked may be 15 devices. Including my own and that one of my man I Can Not confirm Any of These Display issues. Crazy.

Since when did “production run” dates ever change the screen lottery outcome ? 🤣

I’m not sure, but I had a similar experience with my iPad Pro. The 4 units manufactured in August had noticeable uniformity issues. I waited a couple of months and picked up another one from the September batch, and the screen was much better. Could’ve been a coincidence, but that was my experience.

While we are on the topic of screens - how come nobody is mentioning durability? LG screens are known to be more durable than Samsung screens. This matters especially when your phone has a few years on it...

Got a dead display out of the blue with a pink or green line down it - it's a Samsung!

I will preface this by saying that I have a 17 Pro Max, Silver, 256 GB I got in Australia with a GVC panel as a data point.

I am extremely happy with the uniformity on-axis, and it does exhibit a slight green tint on the lower 1/3 bottom when the top is tilted towards me.

However, typically if I ever use the phone tilted, it will be in the other direction, i.e. phone will be laying on a table and in this orientation, there is no colour shift at all.

If I read Apple’s official documentation here:
About the Super Retina display and Super Retina XDR display on your iPhone

It states:
If you look at an OLED display off-angle, you may notice slight shifts in colour and hue. At reduced display brightness levels against black backgrounds, you may notice a slight blur or colour change while scrolling. These are characteristics of OLED and are normal behaviour.

Given my display is perfect on-axis and Apple says it’s normal behaviour to have shifts in colour off-angle, then I think I have got a panel within spec in my unit.

If it helps, I am in the design/creative field in my profession so I do look a high-end displays all the time. I personally own a G-series LG OLED at home.

That being said, following this thread seems to be a lot of bias towards a certain brand over another. What I will say is without a colourimetre or calibration hardware, it’s going to be difficult to tell which display is more accurate.

Sure you might like the colour or vibrancy from a certain panel, but really that’s just subjective and we can only objectively say the display which is most accurate is better.

The only post I saw was a user on this forum who measured the display of a G9N and a GVC, and concluded the GVC panel was closer to the D65 white point which is what we reference to. You can read about it here:

https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...ng-any-australians-here.2467465/post-34177656

But even then, there will be variations between the same panel manufacturer. Generally I will be looking for a panel that is accurate straight on rather than one that is not uniform.

So, because Apple says it's normal justifies it? What are they supposed to say? They get away with crap QC because they are Apple. It is the richest company on the planet, and they could tighten panel QC if they wanted to. There's no excuse for the trash non-uniform Samsung panels or excessive off-axis tint on some LG panels. Not when most other manufacturers don't suffer from these issues.

You can't compare TV OLED with phones. I also have high-end OLED TVs at home. I don't hold my colorimeter up to my phone display. I do know that my phone shouldn't shift to green when tilting it slightly. I use it at my desk at work all day on either a wireless stand or charging stand, and the phone is always tilted. I don't care what Apple tells me, for my normal use if a screen is 1/3 green standing on my desk, it is trash.

I've not experienced this degree of panel lottery on any other devices. Recently got the Oppo Find X9 Pro, screen is completely uniform, no off-axis color shift and no green or pink tint.

Yes, but what can you do? I met a friend today who also bought a 17 PM last week. In short: her panel is a GVC, typically reddish, and the greenish tint is clearly visible in the lower third when tilted. So, the usual. My GH3 is worlds better, but even it has slight color shifts when you change the angle. So what's left to do? Exchange it a hundred times? There seem to be no or hardly any Samsung panels in the PM series. I'm just going to accept it now; otherwise, you simply have to give it back and buy a Samsung Galaxy or something else. ;)
