Of course he's gonna be optimistic. What is he gonna do, come out and say "Well, look, we've not really made much of a progress with the iPhone feature/look-wise in the past who knows how many years, and its sales are slowly declining, but we'll probably have some new stuff for you in a couple of years, so in the mean time buy these CPU/GPU revisions until we're able to deliver newer technology"?

Steve Jobs chose not to give investors any insight - he just helped released damn good products to an unsuspecting world.
I miss, Steve, and the Apple that was.

Mr. jobs also was a man of vision. He COULD see the forest for the trees. He would see that the asian 'cheapo' phone makers are no longer making laughable clones but are primed to eat into Apple's lunch at half the cost or less. He would not let Apple deliver products that were not technological leaders.

If Apple continues asleep at the wheel it may be in for a rough awakening.

The iPhone 7, especially the number 7 is a magical number.

Yet Mr Cook can't see this obviously. He clearly has no vision of the future of iPhones.

Smh sad.

Those persons who say that Tim Cook shouldn't be the CEO anymore are those who would like to do at first a selfie if they see him in front of them.

The first iPhone I will skip. Sadly....

Edit: For one sole reason, the missing headphone jack.

Lol, unless you think they'll only leave it out one gen, or your mock boycott is only going to last one gen- I'm not sure I understand how planning to skip this year has any sort of meaning.
Did you mean "this is the 1st iPhone I'll skip... then each one after that, unless they bring the headphone jack back"?
*confused*

I'm on my third 6+. I don't know where the 'positive' is. I'll wait for the 7s+...

EDIT: I'll probably have to get the iPhone 7 (If I can) because my AppleCare is running out, and if this 'used' iPhone 6+ dies, I'm SCREWED!

(No wonder they don't offer further extended AppleCare plans. There has to be a hook to get people to buy the new iPhone)

there's a few *billion* more headphone jacks and headphones than there ever were of floppies or SCSI drives....
not a wise idea if they really want to go after those developing markets they claim to covet so much.

I don't think the masses in developing countries will be impacted by that. They'll just use whatever default solution Apple provides with the iPhone.

If anything, I think the lack of a headphone jack will impact a minority of folks in developed markets who have premium, 3rd party headphones who don't want to be bothered with adapters; especially if adapters are very expensive.

Was there such a hue and cry after they killed the floppy drive? Maybe, but most people probably admitted that they really didn't use it that much. I knew the wheels were already coming off when I couldn't get the usual case of Sony drives I'd ordered for years. Those were (IMO) the best drives, bar none, ever. Time marched on. I, for one, hope that someone comes out with a damned usable wireless par of headphones. I've tried many of the number ones on the market, and haven't kept any of them. Reception problems (can't get the damn things to work while they are in my ears, and iPhone on belt?), can't keep them in my ears (especially the Beats. I loathed those), and battery live.

Wired really sucks, but if the wireless aren't basically usable, what's the point...

Not excited about this year's iPhone but c'mon people with this non-sense with the headphone's. I've been using Bluetooth headphones since the 3GS. Perfect for the gym, great sound quality (better than the awful earbuds), a full charge lasts at least 12 hours, and takes ~30 minutes to charge. Also have a pair of Bang & Olufsen H8's, expensive but you can get great quality Bluetooth headsets for less $80. My gym ones cost $125 back in 2011 and they're still working perfectly.

It's the same as streaming bluetooth audio in your car. My Audi RS5 has the Bang & Olufsen system that sounds no different than plugging it in. For those with wired headsets, the phone's will ship with a DAC. No one outside of Apple knows what it will look like, it could be small and and easy to use. My advice: just get a pair of bluetooth headsets and cut the cord. Sometimes I wonder if people complain for the sake of it.

Losing the headphone jack may not be a problem for you but it is for others. My teenage daughter, for example, takes good care of her phone but goes through a pair of headphone about every three months. Sometimes they get lost, sometimes stolen, sometimes just destroyed. Bluetooth headphones are also more trouble than they are worth for a teenager, and replacing an external DAC every three months would be very expensive, because they will get lost, stolen, and destroyed as well. There is really no reason for anyone to buy a phone without a headphone jack.

How good is the DAC/Audio playback hardware in the iPhone what happens if you want a better hardware, wait for a new phone and hope it is better? This gives the user more choices from better audio to options like surround sound.

You can have the 3.5 mm port in the phone AND use better DAC through lightning now. User choice.

Remove the jack, and you force users to using more expensive products. Lack of choice.

And no, the separation of two bottom firing speakers will not provide surround sound. It's just to narrow. Technically it's stereo, but at only CMs across, the only added benefit would be louder.

I'm hoping the next iPhone will have Bluetooth 5. If that's the case, Bluetooth 5 headphones shouldn't be too far behind and that should address reception/connection issues (we'll see) and the sound quality should be indistinguishable from wired headphones to all but the most discerning ears.

It would be great if someone reputable came out with a great 2 in 1 headphone solution... wired and wireless.

I didn't believe Tim should have been pessimistic about this iPhone 6se in the first place considering how well the iPhone SE sold and it practically recycled a design from three years ago. So 6se looks like the 6/6s and will sell bad when it has more new features than going from 5s to SE? I guess keep expectations low for less disappointments.

Tim, think positive. Even if iPhone 6se didn't sell as well, that's still better than other companies with flagships. "Apple only sold 40M iPhones! OMG! Gloom and doom!" Gimme a break. 6se will sell better than SE thanks to water-resistance, nomore "FIX ME" physical home button, 32gb base model, and wireless charging. The iPhone 6se underwater selfie ads similar to the Xperia ZR from 2013 will be enough for millions to upgrade to it. 6se becomes the swimming party, beach goer iPhone.

Well, Tim has to sell to his shareholders. Come this fall, the lack lustre iPhone 7 will be marketed as the "best ever" as they do each year. They don't like using the average marketing lingo of "improved'. That doesn't have the same ring to it, does it? And when people look at the new iPhone what do you think they will say or do? Right, they will jump to the competition.

Apple needs to do something different this fall and give people extra special incentive to get the slightly improved device. I know i am interested (if there is an incentive) only because I now only have dumb phones. My iphone 5 is dead. Otherwise, I might have to go with Android Nexus 7 instead.

So you haven't used bluetooth A2DP headsets for ~5 years and are making assumptions that they're inferior and easier to lose. I know a lot of people who haven't used wired headsets in years and haven't lost them, perhaps your daughter should be more careful. A lot of people are making unfounded assumptions. At one point, computers got rid of optical drives and everyone threw fits. I still use them as film projects are far too large and require BDXL's for clients yet I'm not banning computers/Mac's, I just bought an external BDXL drive.

Gotta move on. Apple isn't the only electronics company doing this as others already have and there hasn't been such a strong backlash as I've seen from some here. It's a non-sequitor that always seems to happen before/during a new iPhone launch ("bendgate", "glassgate", "cameragate", now "headphonegate").

I'll probably get a 7, but mostly because I plan to move soon and switch from AT&T to T-Mobile since it's to a bigger city that has good T-Mobile service.

Cook seems to be completely ignoring the change in business models of mobile carriers and how this is likely to affect upgrade cycles. Now that many/most people have to pay for their phones instead of having them included in term contracts, the every-2-years cycle seems to be getting extended. This is an issue particularly when the new device has no compelling features and even removes ones that people expect to have. I know that my family's phones are all 6+ months past the point where we could have upgraded, and the iPhone 7 isn't in our plans either.

Everyone knows what Tim means by what he said. It means more incremental improvements with nothing to "wow" those who actually pay attention and care about tech.

Apple will be the next American Express. What was once a premium brand and sitting at $95 a share, now struggles to get above $60 a share, and has recently slashed their CEO's pay by nearly 30%.

Looks down at my 6+... is this my 3rd one? Maybe. Never really loved it. Not like that first time I used a 4.

I agree. Imagine if Apple wanted us to upgrade our 1000$ laptops every 2 years. We'd be rolling on the floor laughing everyday.
