Jokes aside, I'm excited about what Apple might be able to do here. I would think it's going to be more than just "all electric" as being the main feature. I'm sure they'll work in "pinch to move", "swipe to turn", and even some force touch features like "nudge to park"? :D:p

Oh... a feature I really want... red turtle shells that circle my car... if you know what I mean. :D

long press to block

Queue jokes/complaints related to other products and how Apple can't get that right so they shouldn't be working on a car.
2019 or 2020? Good. Please first focus on fixing the software and hardware on your computers, phones, and watches before venturing and expanding out more than you can afford to
You called it ... lol.

Unless they've achieved fundamental breakthroughs in battery tech, their car won't be viable anyplace that has seasons.

Nonsense.

Norway
has one of the largest market shares for EVs in the world (22% of all new vehicles sold in 2015 were pure electric vehicles).

They have some pretty extreme seasons there.

I wouldn't buy an electric car unless the price was reasonable, it got at least 300 miles on a charge, and battery replacement didn't cost an arm and a leg. You have to know the Apple car is going to be way overpriced

Reading too much into things again, press? Have you never heard the phrase "being played like a violin"?

Change the record, you're no more informed than anyone is.

I love it when Apple play the press like this... I'll grab a two year supply of long dated popcorn, the next few years are gonna be hilarious on here.

They are already getting pretty close to 300 miles. A Tesla Model S gets 270 miles (EPA) or 310 miles (NEDC).

It's not all about range, though - its about availability of charging infrastructure. If there are fast DC superchargers everywhere that can top you up in 20 minutes, then range isn't really a big deal. Even a 200 mile range is more than good enough.

Battery replacement is, probably, a non-issue too. The batteries are already at the point where they'll probably outlast the car.

There's a Norwegian guy on YouTube who's done over 200,000km in his 2013 Tesla and the range is still almost as good as when it was new. If you do end up having to replace the cells after 10 or 15 years, then chances are the batteries will have come down in price a great deal by then.

Yeah the problem is currently the availability of charging stations ... and the length of time it takes to charge. They're okay for going around town, but they're not ready for road trips by any means.

That's fairly true, for now, of models like the Nissan Leaf and BMW i3.

But Tesla are a big exception to this because they've strategically located their own chargers all along major highways in the USA and Europe. Since you're usually going to want to take a break after 3 or 4 hours on the road anyway, stopping to recharge for 20-30 minutes isn't a problem.

Oh, and these chargers are completely free to use for Tesla owners!

That's actually really awesome. Their prices need to come way down though.

Never have I seen so many automobile jokes fall flat all at once.

Except the backdoor one; that was funny.

Whoever told ANYONE there's going to be a car from Apple? People just hear what they want to hear, and what sounds exciting to them, even when the " evidence " is nothing more than a few pieces of information that could be used for ANYTHING car related.

You mugs.

The idea of an Apple car is exciting to me in many more ways than the possibility of getting an automobile release from Apple. Think of the current technologies we may see expanded (ie battery and charging) in existing devices. A new car, no matter how miraculous, is very unlikley to be on my purchase list for immediate future, but that doesn't mean something like this wouldn't still benefit the average user. I am already enjoying 3D touch immensely, which is something that came to us with the Apple watch, as just one such example.

Some will argue that Apple should focus on what they know. But if it's true that Apple are developing a car, then I'm all for it.

Electric vehicles have huge environmental and economic benefits, and self-driving vehicles will save many, many lives.

Sure, other companies are working on this stuff too. But air pollution and deaths from road accidents are some of the more significant problems facing humanity. This stuff is actually way more important than making the next iPhone a little bit thinner, and the more smart people and companies we have working on it, the better.
Good point.

The Tesla Model 3 will be much more affordable. Coming next year.

So, just like every Christmas growing up, I'm going to come downstairs with some hope, only to remember on dec 25 that my family doesn't celebrate Christmas?

THANKS FOR NOTHING TIM!

Model S price will not come down. Did any of the luxury models in the $70k-$100k range come down in price over time. No. They did not. What needs to happen is that Tesla has to introduce more models at various price points. They are already planning on that. Model 3 will start at $35k.
