What is it with MacRumors readers? Or is it Apple fanboys in general that have this peculiar need to white knight for one of the largest corporations in the world? I don't really see that anywhere else. Usually the consumers stick together and commiserate with one another when something breaks. But around here, a lot of people immediately go on the attack. Psychosis, I guess. *shrug*

Yikes!

Though I don't really think it *should* be necessary, I'm glad I decided to buy AppleCare+ on my new iPhone 6. Now the only worry I have is that I'll have to replace it more than twice in the next couple years. LOL

I thought about walking into an Apple store once and looking the 6 over. But, I was afraid the phones would bend if I dared to look at them wrong, and I'd have to pay for breaking all the phones at the store. So, I passed

Just kidding...

I have held the iPhone 6 and 6+ at some stores. And, compared to my iPhone 5, they feel very delicate just to hold / touch.

I remember feeling the same way about my iPhone 5 when I was getting used to it from my Android phone that it replaced. But, my iPhone 5 has maintained it's perfect condition despite my rather careless usage of it.

My iPhone 5 is always in my front pocket with a lighter, key's, change, and whatever else I shove in there. I've dropped it numerous times. I've sat on it numerous times because I forgot it was laying on the couch. I lose it all the time, sometimes I have to call it from the house phone just to find out where I put it down.

But, I would certainly be hesitant to consider the iPhone 6 or 6+. It clearly couldn't survive a day in my life.

In all honesty, there comes a point where something is so light that it becomes more difficult to use and hold onto. Some substance in your hands is easier to hold. This quest for thinner, lighter, etc. is ridiculous. There comes a point of it's too light. And, if it's more fragile as well, that's a bad combination.

ok.

I've been driving for about 48 years and never have had an accident. I do not believe people have accidents while driving cars.

Apple went too thin with aluminum which bends very easily. Since they seem to be bending in the same place there is possibly even a weak spot, at least on some phones.

I don't get all of the hate from the usual suspects. Apple is not infallible, they are not a family member and in fact the only part of you they care about is your money.

For the record. I think apple is dumb for making phones so thin. They're near impossible to hold. I have mine in a silicone case and it will be in one for it's life with me

Even Apple can stumble - esp. when trying to ape Androids! Metal Fatigue!

I think apple is dumb for making phones so thin. They're near impossible to hold.

Structural design is the main issue for 6 buyers - for the following reasons:

1. Very thin design

2. Oblong or very long oval buttons - like Androids!

3. Ring/silent button along side the volume buttons - adding to the large cuts made on that longer, weaker side of the phone's main skeleton.

The thickness matters - even a steel credit card is easily bent. That thickness between the 5 and 6 models is significant - not just to mischief-mongers who deliberately bend the phone, but to normal users in the long run - weeks, or couple or so months!

Like those attractive skinny runway models - useful only to demo on a window!

No matter how strong the material - and this is not made of diamond - that defect in the foundation of the phone makes it vulnerable unlike the 5s series! The "defects" in the 5 series are holes punched in the center of the frame - the ratio is enormously different!

Why is Apple trying to look like a Samsung or the rest of the crowd?

Why did the engineers not spot this? Or, if they did, were they ignored by this quest for thinness?

Why did Apple move the On/Off button? It is rarely/never used while the fingers are busy reaching for the icons at the extreme range!

All of this, plus the marginal improvement in the A8 chips, NFC aside, makes the iPhone 6 an inferior line of product from Apple!

Yes, the screen size needed to be larger to compete with the market; did that need all these compromises?

Why not a 6 series phone with the same dimensions as the 5 series in the thickness? Add 3 to 7 mm in screen size to denote a lower end, "newer", "better" model - not all this engineering troughs!

Any bets the 6S series is going to change?

A thicker (as in the 5 series) phone frame would've been stronger and given room for a better battery!

Nothing wrong with the OS - this is all about the body, not the mind!

Metal fatigue will show more complaints of these "bends" as the days of use go by.

Thumbs down for the first time for an Apple phone model to newer model ever!

Normal Use

I love my Iphone 6 but I am worrying about the bending issue. There are getting to be too many complaints. As the sales trend upwards into the high millions, there are going to be many more. It sure looks like these bending events are occurring with normal use, not abuse. I believe Apple has a real problem here. The design could be flawed with a weak spot near the volume cutouts. I don't think it would take much to convince a jury in a class action suit.

It would be interesting if such a suit was filed, during the discovery phase, if this bending tendency was shown during testing and bypassed, which is a real possibility.

I have no idea what Apple can do now if the design is flawed. A replacement phone will have the same design problem.

I keep my Iphone 6 in an Apple leather case. I think I will now go and look for a more rigid case to protect the phone and return the leather case to Apple. Just not worth risking bending the phone.

How is you bending the phone a warranty issue? The iPhone 6 is very tough for what it is, but it is a long thin piece of metal with a load of high-tech stuff in it. Yes, of course I could bend my iPhone, but I would be dumb to do so. I think it's amazing that Apple would offer to replace it for US$79 and the price of Applecare plus.

Be more careful next time.

The way Apple is doing things these days, I am surprised they don't start out with a bent iPhone and refer to the new innovative 'ergonomic' shape.

Then again, I never understood why anyone would take a few hundred dollar appliance and stuff it in a trouser pocket.

Went yesterday to the Apple Store to check the new iPhones. Of all displayed iPhones only one 6 was bent, not bad

It's crazy that even one was bent... Apple absolutely has to make the 6s a rousing success to break off this bad image.

Back pocket? Sure. Sitting on something like that is a horrible idea. However, there's no excuse that a handheld device cannot stay in shape if it's in the front pocket, where phones are held and carried by pretty much everyone.

It was more like twisted than bent. Was not too bad, but I agree it shouldn't even be there in the first place. On the other hand I tried to understand how sturdy they were and overall it seemed quite sturdy.

nobody asked Apple to make it that thin or use the material it did...

a Phone needs to be portable and hence needs to take certain amount of pressure/force. Being the weakest phone on the market is not good to begin with...

iPod, thinner then iPhone 6 or 6+

just slept on it sat on it with my butt as i was getting up, no Bend.

End of discussion, some one is lying.

I'm not a fanboy. I get where you're coming from and agree on certain things. For example I think the new mac mini upgrade sucks and should be upgradeable.

However, with the iPhone 6 be real. It may not be the most durable phone in the world. I agree on that. I'm not incorrect in saying it doesn't bend itself though. That was my point. Unless the phone warped over time as it heated, something had to happen for it to bend. Otherwise my day 1 6+ that's only in a slickwraps skin would be bent as well.

Many people are on completely opposite ends of the spectrum. There are some fanboys, then you have others who expect everything to be idiot proof (not directed at OP or anyone in particular).

And stuff bought at the dollar store does not just break either. Anything bought there would theoretically last forever if you keep it in its packaging and leave it on a shelf.

This doesn't really make sense and is a terrible comparison... To entertain though.. 9/10 an item purchased at the dollar store would malfunction over time on it's own... Even if left on a shelf, the glue holding a handle together can fail, the drop of solder on an electronic wire can come lose, etc. This is a defect or cheap / poorly assembled product.

The iPhone does not warp over time by itself. As I said above I don't think it has the best durability. You still have to bend it yourself though.

My concern, as someone who is waiting on their iP6 to arrive, is that a significant number of the bent phones shown on MR to date have been from people who say they aren't doing anything other than routine front-pocket carry, which is exactly how I carry my phone. Rather than consoling myself through denial and assuming all these people are lying, I want to know what's really going on. It's really unhelpful to have the Attack Team come in to every thread and shout down the OP as a shill or liar.

So basically this is another thread about someone sitting on a 6 mm thick piece of aluminum and glass that now want Apple to replace it for free?
The good news is that with all this ridiculous mess someone put on the internet, Apple will probably change it free of charge.

You shouldn't require a case wow I can't believe the crap I hear here sometimes.

Steve jobs didnt even use cases, he hated them, a case shouldn't be required.

You are right. You don't need a case. You just need not to sit on a phone, especially one thin.

I'm just stating the obvious that things do not bend on its own. I have no reasonable expectation that anything from the dollar store will last more than a few uses. I think iPhone owners should have some reasonable expectation that their phones will not bent in a pocket. I do agree if they took better care and were diligent , 100% of the time this would not happen. For me that would take away from the "it just works " experience.

Thats the thing, On the other side of the phone where the power button is, it looks COMPLETELY fine. No bend what so ever. The bend is only on the volume button side.

Image

The volume button side is where the frame is more prone to bend. You most probably sat on it applying pressure on that side...

That convinces me then the problem is real... a slight structural defect at one spot in an otherwise solid shell.

This article spells it out:
http://www.cultofmac.com/297938/weakspot-theory-shows-bendgates-quite-dead-yet/

Surely that is the weakest spot on the phone.
Every model has one (or more).
You just have to avoid putting pressure there.

I am using Gionee 5.5( slimmest phone in the world just 5.5mm), I keep it in my front pocket regularly without a case and drive about 20kms daily like that, no bend nothing and it's made of metal and glass. So thinner phones doesn't necessarily bend if proper material is used.

Saying that I am going to buy iPhone 6 when it's available in my city. Not a Apple or Android fanboy but have used android for a long time and now want to go back to iOS.

One thing I will say is I'm a bit more careful. For example tying shoe with phone in front pocket or certain bending. The other week I caught myself before putting my foot up on a bench to tie my shoe. The top of the phone was slightly out of my pocket. With where the phone was positioned and force maybe that would've caused it to bend?

Who knows. I guarantee your phone will not bend by itself though. Anyway good luck.

I would absolutely LOVE to see one of the "Attack Team" end up with a bent iPhone. I'm sorry, but some people have such a holier-than-thou attitude about this whole bending issue. I'm extremely careful with my phone throughout the day, as I'm sure many people on here are, but I'm not going to just assume someone doesn't take care of their phone as well as me like people on here do. I don't think it's fair to automatically assume every bent phone is strictly the user's fault. What if there really is something wrong with the aluminum used in the design and it loses its' structure when it heats up or something of that nature? Unless you watched the person bend their phone or sit on it, don't act like you know what they did or didn't do to cause their phone to bend.

On a side note, unless I'm missing something, all the bent phones I've seen have been Space Grey. Have there been any Silver or Gold bent phones?

For the record. I think apple is dumb for making phones so thin. They're near impossible to hold. I have mine in a silicone case and it will be in one for it's life with me

I agree.

People don't seem to understand how soft aluminum really is and when you make it that thin it's even easier to bend.

As someone who used to enjoy trolling back in the 90s when I was young and immature, I need to just say it:

This whole thing is a MASSIVE trolling opportunity. I wouldn't be surprised if most of the posts are people trolling, hoping to get threads like this out of it.

Causing strife and controversy is what trolls live for.

So it's not surprising to me if many of these threads are BS. That's not to say there aren't legitimately bent iPhone 6 units out there, but i suspect the number is very low.

People always say that they don't know how that happen but the true is that an iphone 6 will never bend by itself like magic.

Maybe some day people go out for party and then drink some wine or beers and they don't remember what they have do.

Also an iphone could bend while you use a bicycle, climb steps, tie your shoes, get inside the car, and everything that forces your iphone more than normal inside your pocket.

It is not difficult to detect when you are making more force with your iphone inside your front pocket.

The iphone 5 also have the bend issue but never something will bend by itself

If you take care of your iphone it will never bend by itself, there is no magic here.

so their phone is actually levitating in the air without any interaction and they just bend? weird, cause im on week 2 with mine, and there's no dents anywhere. but i also don't sit on it. so i guess yeah, there's some correlation between doing something to your device to bend it, and it bending.

The better comparison would be if the car dented while driving to the store without hitting anything, and it was just the normal driving that caused it to dent. In that case you bet it would be a design flaw.

----------

no, what is absurd is people's inability to understand that all metal is to some degree malleable, and IF YOU SIT ON IT or put unnecessary stress and pressure on it, it's going to ****ing bend. it's really, really, REALLY REALLY SIMPLE cause and effect. just because apple made something everyone thinks it's not going to ever break if you abuse it. duh.

So it's impossible that there could have been a quality control problem at the factory?

Absurd.

I feel really bad for everyone with a bent phone. Sure a few got bent on purpose and another few sat on. However I do not believe for one minute that everyone that bought one mishandled their expensive phone just to try and get Apple to swap them. That is totally absurd.

I've decided not to purchase the iPhone 6. I'm still using a 4s so I desperately wanted to upgrade. Now I have no idea what I'll end up with because I'm not buying a device that's obviously defective. Agree with me or not, I don't have money to just throw away, and whatever I buy will have to last me at least two years. Apple needs to get their act together and do right by their customers.
