Is this software or hardware related?
Most likely a calibration issue (Software).

Apple is using an algorithm to perform palm rejection so you can hold the phone without triggering accidental touches on the edges. This is even more important on 16 Pro-series because of the thin bezels.

Apparently they didn't use the phone themselves before releasing it to the public. The algorithm is way off.

This is also why thinner bezels is not necessarily better in every way. It looks nicer, but usability is more important imho.

Thing that worry me the most , is that some guys dont have that issue at all , and if some dont have , or its a app related , and they dont have that app , or it a faulty units.
For it to be software , it would be on all devices , not on some
Some guys and girls also look in the mirror every morning and think they’re a 10. 🤣🤣

Is anyone returning their pro max because of this issue ?
Within the next two weeks I'll return mine if not fixed. I don't care if it's software related, I'll return as I don't know when they'll fix it. I'm reading somewhere as well that it may also be hardware so I don't want to take a chance.

Just installed 18.1 public beta 2. Can no longer reproduce the screen lockup by tapping and holding near camera control

I was able to reproduce it 100% of the time before

Who has said it's hardware? Not a single reputable person has said that

I am sorry if this question has been asked, but has anyone reached out to Apple regarding the number of us having an issue with the touch screen, and what did they say?

I contacted apple support as well. They told me to contact the screen protector company 😡.
That is awesome, finger pointing. My question was all about screen protectors, and i was told 100% it wasn't This is now concerning me, do we return theses phones, or will it ever get fixed? A lot of money invested in these phones.

I’m thinking about returning the phone. I feel like apple will fix the palm rejection issue but not address the screen protector issue. But looking at it from apples point of view, if the screen works without a protector then why is it our problem. Hopefully they’re aware of both issues or these issues are tied together.

While I'm not having the issue (except having to hold my phone in a very specific way in order to replicate it), I did send feedback (pointing to the original article on 9 to 5 Mac and this forum thread) Feedback - iPhone - Apple

Another suggestion (for those experiencing it more seriously) is to file a report on Feedback Assistant from that device by typing applefeedback:// in the search/URL bar in Safari. This will launch the Feedback Assistant app allowing you to signin with your Apple Account (it can collect diagnostic info if given the permissions).

I am trying to wrap my head around this touch screen issue. I went to school for computers for 3 years, and I am trying to figure out how an update is going to eliminate the problem, when you are physically touching the screen becomes a hardware problem.

Palm rejection works by using algorithms to differentiate between a fingertip, stylus or a palm. Problem here is it seems that it may be over sensitive or calibrated wrongly thus interpreting normal finger use as an unintended interaction and ignoring you and this causes the screen to become unresponsive or intermittent requiring multiple taps.

If this is the cause of the current issues then this algorithm can be tweaked in a software update so that it does not mistake normal finger use as unintended inputs.

I have touch issue even when I put my phone on desk and do not touch it with another hand. So it is not about camera control.
I have issues as well. Mine are all mostly related to the keyboard and not anywhere else on the screen. So the bottom half of the screen is my major issue.

I have been testing this and on my 16 Pro Max I see the following:

* With a screen protector on, I have issues regardless if my palm is touching the area around the camera control button or not. Even when the phone is flat on the table.

* Without a screen protector, the issue is only happening when my palm is touching the area near the control button. Flat on a table, it works as expected.

I do not want to waste my screen protector to try. There are app that sometimes touch display does not work at all - sometimes it happens me in instagram as well.
