My 16 pro max touch issues are very inconsistent. When I add a photo to a text message or try and link a website there is a significant lag which I never have experienced with any of my older iphones. The back button in the upper left on many apps requires four or five taps often times. I have always purchased a new iphone since they came out and can honestly say this 16PM is by far the worst Apple experience I have ever had. Still hope an update fixes this.

Update on my situation. Took phone to Apple Store. Was half a week outside of return window. It failed the digitizer test and they said I could leave it overnight for a display replacement. I asked for a manager override (nicely) to see if I could exchange it. YMMV if you are out side the return period. They didn’t have to do it but were nice enough to approve. Exchanged for another 16 pro max in desert titanium. So far this one seems solid. October build. I will say…some of the lag people are talking about seems to be a software issue. But on top of that, my old phone was missing touches randomly and I had a screen recording showing how bad it would get at times. I have also not had another screen protector installed. Knowing how they affect these…I’m going to think on it a bit whether or not I want to get another screen protector (belkin @ Apple Store) or just go without. I have AppleCare 🤷🏻‍♂️

Could you test whether you can reproduce the WhatsApp microphone button issue with the new phone to determine if it’s related to touch screen responsiveness?

Can you please describe the digitize test and how it failed?

Did they test your screen by moving a finger over dots that turned blue when touched?

In your case, were there dots that didn’t change color?

I have no problem with the microphone button in WhatsApp but there is a problem with the small + on the other (left) side at the bottom. The first few clicks work and then after about 6 or 7 quick presses it locks up for a while. For clarity, I click + and then the upper part of the screen to go back down. I repeat this action several times and it can lock up. I have the same in the messenger app, the same + (left side at the bottom) also blocks in the same way. I will add that the place where there is + in other apps or iOS has no problems

Yes it was the blue dots test. The very lower right corner wasn’t responding at all and she was using a lot more force than should be necessary to try and get it to register. Other parts of the screen didn’t seem as responsive but ultimately did respond when she went back over them a few times.

We had here touch issues and some different issues where after installing a screen protector it was lifting up in one of the corners.
Both were resulting with an exchange of the phones, couple of guys/girls here exchanged their phones due to touch problems and got new devices which worked much better with same software. Some people got problems with screen protectors and after reinstalling 10x times at apple store Belkins one, their devices were exchanged due to bend displays. None of those problems were solved with to a software upgrade.

All of that just shows that probably there is something off with the screen construction or just glueing the layers, nonetheless it is non reparable without exchanging the device or the screen at least. So I would strongly suggest if anyone has any touch or screen protector problems, to return or exchange their device bc it is unlikely to be repaired with a software upgrade. And Apple will try to hide the problem and eventually after 2 or three years will replace or repair some devices. They've done it with ghosting screens, with faulty macbook keyboards and so on. So if you are withing your 14 return window, just use it to return your device. Those devices are too expensive to be faulty from the get-go

Did the screen protectors work properly on the new devices?

I mean not sure how they work but good devices work same good with or without screen protectors (at lweast form the comments). But the problem was with installing a screen protector on a faulty device where after many unsuccessful tries where sp was always lifting up in same corner, Apple were exchanging the device due to a faulty (bend) screen and it was resulting in no problem at all when installing a new screen protector. Just saying that those problems can be connected and maybe a bend screen results with a touch problems too but not all screens are bend so hard that it makes installing the screen protector impossible. At the end, something is wrong with some devices and Apple is hiding that stuff and not commenting at all.

Interesting. I don’t use WhatsApp microphone but just tested it . In one of my chats not all of them it wouldn’t engage the microphone. I turned the phone to landscape mode used it. Then it immediately started working all of the time in portrait mode with the same chat that it wasn’t working with before. Just my observation.

My experience with the iPhone 16 pro max has been terrible!
I started with the desert titanium September built, had very bad touchscreen issues (almost unresponsive), exchanged for black titanium September built same issues even after the latest update. Exchanged for white titanium October built, noticeable less issues but it’s still there randomly.
Played around with some display units while I was in store and they have the same keyboard issues I’m having.
Unless they come out with a software update within my return period, I’ll probably return the phone.

One thing you all can try is that during the apple diagnostic test where you check for multi touch. Over there the keyboard works properly. I tested it out when entering the WiFi password, that should tell you how good the touch screen is.

Keyboard is much more reliable if I touch the screen somewhere else when typing. Does that mean touch screen is defective?

Edit: removed Belkin screen protector and so far looks like issue is gone.

I found something interesting. The very few times I've had this lagyness, missing touches etc. I noticed when I go to websites like macrumers and scroll its very choppy etc. Feels like 15 FPS. Al I have to do is lock and unlock the screen and its fine again. I don't think this is a touchscreen issue but some software bug that occasionally pops up slowing everything down.

Yeah my old one did that too. New one hasn’t so far

So after a day with my replaced 16 Pro Max. I was someone who suffered from laggy keyboard but also some touch issues where I had to tap a couple times here and there. I’m definitely in agreement with jajo.j

It’s a night and day difference with this new one. It’s actually keeping up with my typing. I’m doing maybe one typo here and there compared to every single time I was typing on my old phone. I’m so glad I went in there instead of waiting for a potential fix in 18.1

I’m also thinking this is hardware related as well. Because I am using the same backup I had on my launch day 16PM, the same protector that I installed in the first place, nothing different.

If you are having keyboard issues with the new 16, I highly recommend you booking a Genius Bar appointment as we’re all still within the 60 day of AppleCare.

I’m still gong to be following the thread here and there to see what other findings are to be seen. But I am a happy camper now.
Hi Just checking my new iphone and as a new user have hard time noticing the problem (hopefully i don’t have it) but Inhave a question, bc my keyboard looks to sork jut fine but sometimes i have a problem when hitting a top left corner back button/arrow, but not sure if it is due to my big fingers or my touch. Do you miss some small buttons on your new device? Was hitting that small things worse on your prev faulty device? Cheerz

May I know if you installed screen protector when failed the digitizer test?

How did it happen that the touch test failed? When running your finger over certain areas of the screen, did the blue squares not light up, or did they only light up after multiple taps?

You did the right thing requesting a full replacement; a display replacement would have been a bad idea.

how did they fix that issue? does it always happen or just randomly happen?

i was wondering if anyone here has upgraded to ios 18.2 beta, has the issue improved?

@jajo.j hi, I think for me the problem with touch regarding the back button in top left corner is connected with ios animation.
Can you check on your new device for me if you can quickly enter a dialog in messages and use arrow to quickly go back and continue several times? My phone (iOS 18.1) works ok if I do it slowler than the animation, but if I'm quicker then it does not register the touch no matter if the touch is on the back arrow or just in the middle of the name (to enter the dialog) like the Ios animation is disabling registering of any touch. I can easily reproduce my problem, but I have no idea if it is a problem with iOS or just my phone. Can you reproduce the problem?

PS. The diffrence between being too fast and just ok is very minimal, if I'm too fast I have to just tap slightly slower and it is ok.

i think there is really a problem with iOS animations. it is not consistent everywhere. sometimes on the back button. sometimes on the home screen animation, it will disable touch gestures when the previous animation is not finished. but not always. it is not consistent. also the lock animation as well as the wake animation, it is much slower than the 15 Pro Max, the difference is like night and day.

The problem is not with your iPhone. I have the same bug
