@jajo.j hi, I think for me the problem with touch regarding the back button in top left corner is connected with ios animation.
Can you check on your new device for me if you can quickly enter a dialog in messages and use arrow to quickly go back and continue several times? My phone (iOS 18.1) works ok if I do it slowler than the animation, but if I'm quicker then it does not register the touch no matter if the touch is on the back arrow or just in the middle of the name (to enter the dialog) like the Ios animation is disabling registering of any touch. I can easily reproduce my problem, but I have no idea if it is a problem with iOS or just my phone. Can you reproduce the problem?

PS. The diffrence between being too fast and just ok is very minimal, if I'm too fast I have to just tap slightly slower and it is ok.
Oh Yes, fair observation!
as well I think that this your observation may be issue.

I don't know if this has been answered or not but does using a case prevent the touch issues as only 1 had will actually be in touch with the screen mostly?

I use my phone with cover, but the touch issue happens often on the edge up or down left and right side!

I got a new 16 pro max October build and have no touch issues with this one. I’m also using an esr armorite screen protector.

I have August build. No problem.
no problem at all, like even if you hit the back button faster then the animation ends it still registers?

EDIT: I was at the Apple Store and all are the same like mine, meaning if you tap too fast smth before the prev animation ends, the tap will not be registered. I moved from an android phone so it is a bit crazy for me and probably I have very fast fingers bc I’m always just a tad faster. But if all iphones are same way, I think I’m ok with my oct build 16 PM and I will keep it. Screen is so so but whatever, like in EU catching a PM is crazy hard getting a desert eas even harder for whatever reason (like black and white are much easier to get) so i will pass on exchanging it being scared I will get even worse screen (my has a slight tint after tilting but I saw some much worse) so yeah i think i don’t have a touch problem but overall the iOS is a bit ****** in this regard and if someone comes from android it is crazy easy to miss some inputs just bc of the animations (keyboard works great thou)

What you’re describing is a normal behavior of iOS 18, where the animations have to finish before performing an action. We’re talking about fractions of a second.

It’s quite obvious, I don’t understand how you could have fixated on an issue with the touchscreen.

Every iPhone has this behavior. In addition to a 16 Pro Max, I have a 12, and it does the same thing. I also have a 13 Pro with iOS 17, same thing.

Why are you so upset over what is ibviousky not an issue?

Since I got the 16P it has behaved as expected, haven’t noticed any issues when using it really. Same as previous iPhones. Just tried to do a back button test quickly and are not perceiving any ”lag”, maybe I’m not fast enough. Can’t really compare with android and have had iPhones since 2008… sorry to hear the issues you see on your side, hope it all gets sorted out.

Bought iPhone 16 pro yesterday. I also have issues with touch.

If I am fast and animation not finished, touch ignored. If i go to apple website to buy an iPhone and change desired color “fast” enough touch ignored. Same swiping tinder.

The screen is good so i am afraid to exchange it.

Apple support online did diagnostics remote and no issues.

Definitely less responsive than the traded iphone 14 pro, both ios 18.1.

Dont know what to do :S looks like software issue to me.

Tried touch screen testers online and all areas work.

This iPhone was setup with iCloud backup. Apple asked me to do a power cycle of the battery. Let it drain to 0, charge to 100 and drain to 0. Lets see…

It's pretty simple and ofc I will explain it to you. I moved from an android device and I was using only Samsung Galaxy phones for the last 10 years. I would never consider that having to wait for an animation can be a correct behavior and not a bug. Ofc I can understand that if you were using iPhones for the last 10 years it can be even a feature for you. Maybe my fingers are crazy fast, have no idea really, but every third or fourth touch outside of the keyboard (which works great) ends up with a touch not being registered. It is crazy irritating. Outside of that I relly love the phone and I'm really happy but that one animation bug or a feature as you want, is making the iPhone on par with my Galasy s2 (2011 year) in terms of usability.

TLDR It is an issue bc 70% of my touches is that small tad faster than an animation. I can fully understand that with slow fingers you did not notice the problem at all. BTW iPhone animations are crazy slow and long comparing to an android phone so it can be just me being used to a much faster typing and using the phone. Like this phone has similar geekbench scores to my m1 pro and I have to wait for the animation to end? Like wtf really :D

Well after reading your description and your findings that all the iPhones in the store exhibit the same behavior as yours ( back button top left corner quickly ..) then I’d suggest you exchange the device. Ridiculous advice indeed. 🤣

I've done some testing on my 16 Pro Max against my "fun phone/secondary phone", a Pixel 9 Pro.

Although my 16 Pro Max is night and day comparing to the first 16 Pro Max I got on launch day, it is clear that something is still a bit off with the iPhone.

Pixel is by no means a quicker phone to use. It has plenty of stutters and overall it feels like it struggles more with daily tasks than the iPhone. But the touch screen is more instant and it is consistent unlike the iPhone that feels sluggish at times for no logical reason.

When the iPhone is snappy it is much more smooth than the Pixel. But it is not consistent which bugs me a lot. I have found myself using the Pixel more for daily tasks because the consistency is very important for me, especially when typing on the keyboard.

This is something entirely new for me. iPhones always felt smoother and quicker than Androids but it seems that with this release, Apple screwed something up. I don't know if it is an issue with the thin bezels/palm rejection or something else going on with the calibration of the touch screen.

I have also used a 15 Pro Max side-by-side with a Pixel 9 Pro in the past and always felt that the iPhone was superior in smoothness and input lag. So I cannot draw any other conclusion that this is a 16 Pro issue.

Very disappointing. I am deep in the Apple eco system and using the Pixel as my main phone would be a huge downgrade as I am using almost every feature that Apple has to offer on Macbook, iPad, Apple TV, Apple Watch, HomeKit, iMessage and Airtags. I am right now strongly considering downgrading to an iPhone 15 Pro Max unless they can get this solved.

How did it happen that the touch test failed? When running your finger over certain areas of the screen, did the blue squares not light up, or did they only light up after multiple taps?

You did the right thing requesting a full replacement; a display replacement would have been a bad idea.
Some of them they had to go over multiple times and one small square in the bottom right would not light up at all. She was using a lot more force than should be needed too.

I understand what you mean by snappiness lack, but in my eyes this is a software bug or internal touch sensitivity missaligniment in the software. Palm rejection I don think, as I have same issues while using it with 1 finger on the desk.

I tried today an iPad and an iPhone 11 Pro, both using the Apple website, the section to select the iPhone color you want to buy. When selecting quickly each of the colours left to right, the touch failed also on iPad and iPhone 11 Pro. And it fails because the iphone image reloads with the colour selected and that animation stops touch. This is just an example, but there are more.

My conclusion is that my iPhone 16 PRO is ok, and iOS 18 needs a tweak, as the animations block too much touch input.

Going back to iPhone 15 Pro Max with iOS 18.1 seems it is going to see the same experience (in my eyes).

16PM launch unit still having touch issues. I setup this phone as new and loaded the apps individually (not from any backup). I have talked to apple support twice, once a few days after setting up and again two days ago reporting touch problems. Again they performed a remote diagnostic that show the phone is perfect... Apple support asked me to start from scratch and perform a factory restore - they sent me the link below. Gonna go back to my 15PM if I can't get this solved. Absolutely the worst Apple experience / purchase EVER for me...

So letting the phone go completely dead and totally drain the battery twice could possibly fix the screen sensitivity issue??? Did Apple support really advise this could be the fix ??? Let me know if that fixes it. That would be pretty crazy if that splits the atom....

Is it true? I dont think so
