As much as I thought i wanted a wider screen, and would hate just taller, now that I have it in my hand, I think it's perfect. just because screens on other phones are bigger and wider, doesn't make them better. And in most cases makes them more cumbersome. for what I do on a daily basis the screen size is more then perfect.

So I tried the iPhone 5 at the Apple Store today. Just as I expected, the screen was not impressive as it is still so puny compared to every other major smartphone on the market. It really needs more surface area, specifically width, in order to be useful to do things like reading webpages in portrait mode comfortably. A 4 inch 16:9 screen was good.......3 years ago. This is 2012, get with the program Apple. Trying the iPhone 5 out in person has cemented by decision to go with something else for my next smartphone. After trying the Samsung Galaxy S3 and seeing its much larger screen, my God, what a revelation on what I've had to put up with on the tiny screens of iPhones.

Some people buy cars to compensate. Others buy phones with larger screens. It's all good.

When I want a bigger screen, I use my iPad.

Otherwise my iPhone 5 screen is plenty big for what I need it to do.

I thought my Nexus S had the most perfect size screen of all my android phones. Apple going with 4" now suits me fine.

It's funny because most people said the same thing about 3.5 screen on the iPhone 4 and now the same thing is being said about the 5.

Don't get me wrong I love my iPhone 4S, but I'm intrigued by the galaxy s3, so much so that I've ordered one. I'm fast running out of space on my IPhone and I can't justify the cost of getting a 32 or 64 gig, whereas I can buy a 32gig micro sd for less than 15 pounds.
I don't know if I'll get on with the S3 but I'm going to reserve judgment until I've given it a good go. If I don't like it I'll just send it back and carry on with the 4s bid I do like it I'll sell the 4s and recoup most of the cost. So it's win win!

This guy baffles me... He must be an only child and he is crying out for some attention because he parents or friends never paid attention to him. I just don't get why he feels he needs to come a apple message board and bash it as if anyone cares about this one dudes opinion. Please just go to the android boards and leave us to the good life here

The reason the iPhone is the designed the way it is is because it is possible to use it with one hand comfortably. The iPhone has the largest possible screen you can use one handed. It could not be any bigger as my 6'1" tall person fingers would have to uncomfortably stretch or move the phone around if it were bigger.

You must have lady hands. I'm 6' tall and I can easily use my S3 one handed (and I have average size hands).

If Apple wanted they could add a 5.5" edgeless display and make the biggest screened phone in the world and it would still be thinner, lighter and have less volume than the S3. They didn't because they beleive if you want to use something two handed it should be an iPad or iPad mini:

That's good that Apple believes that. I, however, prefer to decide what's best for me, not let some company do it. And if they do introduce this mythical iPad Mini that everyone keeps going on and on about, why do you think they're doing it? Because they think it's what's best for us? Uh, no. It'll be because the 7" tablet market has suddenly exploded in popularity and they want a piece of it (by completely going against what the Messiah Jobs directly stated a couple of years ago). Amazing that Google releases the Nexus 7, it takes off, and now Apple wants to jump in with their own version. Hmm...where have I seen that before? Something is introduced...Apple resists it...then introduces their own version of it a year or two later...and suddenly it's "magical". It's called copying.

Anyways, the Galaxy S3 also has much worse quality in every dimensions, screen quality is abysmal, build quality is abysmal, and with the US dual core version it's slower too.

You sincerely have no clue what you're talking about here. None. You're just regurgitating what others have said about the S3. Screen quality is abysmal? WTF? Build quality is abysmal? LOL. Oh, and to your last point, the US version has 2 gig of RAM to go with that dual core, whereas the International version has 1 gig of RAM and a quad core. More cores do not equal faster. More RAM, however, does.

See my replies above.

Not sure what's funny about it... Reality is that making the screen wider or longer can mess with one-hand usefulness. Apple will do what they want to do when it comes to screen size. Some people will like it, some people won't. I enjoy being able to access most of my screen with one hand. I would have been even happier with a thinner and lighter iPhone 5 with a 3.5 screen! Its a bit more difficult for me to reach the top and bottom of the screen with the new iPhone. Unfortunately, I don't make the choices at Apple. That's why acceptance is important... That or the will to change...

See my replies above.

6' is not average so unless your hands are disproportionately small, your first statement is false.

And while I somewhat agree with your assertions about Apples entry into the 7" tablet market, you're kidding yourself if you think the Nexus 7 was the reason. If an iPad Mini exists, it was in development long before the launch of the Nexus 7.

Copying?? The Tablet market is what is because of the iPad... So I do not see how that is copying anything. The concept of a smaller, less expensive version... Sure, okay. But the Tablet market is what it is because of the iPad. Therefore, everyone else copied them in the first place (in their own way).

Of course they want a piece of that pie... Why shouldn't they?

I thought I would be the last person to agree with this one handed use crap but I've finally seen there is something to it. After seeing some of these monster phones out there today it would be unusable one handed. I had an EVO that had a 4.3 screen and really liked it but I can't imagine a 4.8, that's just nuts.

I can use the iPhone one handedly but choose to use two as its far more comfortable. Riddle me that

WoW, so much love in this thread !

Move on and be nice. :D

you guys should just stop feeding these threads. It is just useless bantering back and forth and waste space on the forums, and in addition, further provoke and promote more similar threads...

You missed where he went beyond offering an opinion and made intentionally inflamatory statements.

Hmmmm....don't we have a word for that?

Well I was hoping for a larger iPhone 5 and when the rumors turned out to be true was set on getting an S3.

I had played with a few friends' S3s but never with the intention of owning one.

So I went to buy one and really wanted to be sure I would be happy with it. So I gave it a good workout.

The first thing that hit me, with my 4S sitting side-by-side, was that the screen did not have that "pop" for lack of a better word. So I thought it must be the brightness setting. Cranked it up and the 4S's screen still looked brighter with more color saturation.

Then I looked at what I use my iPhone for, and how I could or could not do it better with the 3S.

iMessage? Nope. Over half of my friends use iMessage, including my girlfriend and daughter. But I woud have to go back to plain SMS/MMS or use another app like WhatsApp. So for the thing I use the most it would have been a step back.

Apps? Just the thought of trying to replicate the apps I nave now, often universal apps that work on my iPad too, made me cringe. This seemed a step back.

Email? Not much different for me.

Navigating? I have had no real issues with the new iOS Maps app. But I also own Navigon. So this ends up being a wash (for me--Navigon is quite good if I find iOS Maps app is not working right).

Games? I don't play too many games on my iPhone, being spoiled with the iPad. I hoped the larger screen on the S3 might "bridge the gap" between iPhone and iPad but clearly it's not big enough to do that. Plus the games I play most are things like Words With Friends. Not much benefit to larger screen. I have WWF on my iPad but rarely choose to play it on iPad, even if iPad is right next to me. So I didn't see how any of this would be different on an S3.

Web browsing? Well definitely liked the larger screen of the S3. But I don't really "browse the web" on my iPhone all that much and didn't think that would change much on the S3. Still, I can't argue that more screen real-estate for browsing isn't better.

Keep in mind I was comparing S3 to my iPhone 4S, not iPhone 5. So I decided that my 4S was actually pretty darn good. My girlfriend just got a 5 and I have to say now I want one.

To each their own...

Random dude's opinion is random.

I'm still trying to figure out why there are replies after this one. You like a different phone, thanks for sharing! Everything else has been debated.

Honestly the screen on the Galaxy S3 is absolute trash. The specs (some of them... some of the specs are even worse haha) are good on PAPER but when you actually compare the two devices the iPhone 5 has clearly a much nicer screen. The Galaxy S3 has HALF the red and blue sub-pixels, so everything is oversaturated with green and looks terrible... not to mention that it has HALF the maximum brightness of the iPhone, and actually features a shorter battery life even though there is a larger battery, dimmer screen, etc. Congrats

See, I had the opposite. I was 100% dead set on the Galaxy S 3. I was all about it, even defending it here. While it's a great phone and all, I got to use the black iPhone 5 at the Apple store. It completely sold me in 5 minutes. I haven't even reconsidered the Galaxy. The iPhone is fast, unbelievably light, the design is outstanding and it just all around is more convenient for me since I have a macbook/itunes.

These people agree with you:
We’ll examine the OLED Galaxy S III display in detail below, but here are the Highlights: the Brightness is about half of the iPhone 5 due to power limits from the lower power efficiency of OLEDs and concerns regarding premature OLED aging. The Color Gamut is not only much larger than the Standard Color Gamut, which leads to distorted and exaggerated colors, but the Color Gamut is quite lopsided, with Green being a lot more saturated than Red or Blue, which adds a Green color caste to many images. Samsung has not bothered to correct or calibrate their display colors to bring them into closer agreement with the Standard sRGB / Rec.709 Color Gamut, so many images appear over saturated and gaudy. Running Time on battery is less than the iPhone 5 due to the lower power efficiency of OLEDs, even given that the Galaxy S III has a much larger battery capacity and much lower Brightness.

And it is exactly what I felt comparing an S3 to a 4S. The 5, apparently, is noticeably improved over the 4/4S:
We’ll examine the iPhone 5 display in detail below, but here are the Highlights: it is the Brightest Smartphone we have tested in the Shoot-Out series, it has one of the lowest screen Reflectance values we have ever measured, it has the highest Contrast Rating for High Ambient Light for any Mobile device we have ever tested, and it’s Color Gamut and Factory Calibration are second only to the new iPad. What are the downsides? The White Point is still somewhat too blue like most Smartphones, and at Maximum Brightness it has a shorter Running Time than the iPhone 4, which is not surprising since it has a larger screen and a larger Color Gamut but roughly the same capacity battery.
