I never aid it was a format, but Sony has launched several 'Hi-Res' audio products now, and I would imagine it's different from Apple's lossless encoding.

They (Sony) just announced a Hi-Res player this year at IFA. Also, Neil Young will be releasing one that is called "Pono". But Apple has a chance to steal their thunder with an iTunes Hi-Res store and with iPhones that can play the files (currently iPhones and iPods can only play Hi-Res audio up to 16 bit 44khz and the maximum for Hi-Res is 24 bit 192khz)

This knocks my excitement down big time. I have no interest in U2 (and I'm in my 30's, can't imagine the 15-30 crowd giving any crap either).... so whatever the purpose of them being there better be good.

U2 are legends

regardless what you think of them or even know them, U2 has a huge worldwide following that has lasted over 35 years, in addition to promoting product red charity and helping people around the world.

get ready for a product red iWatch, with performance and new commercial featuring U2, to help jumpstart excitement for this new wearable.

My only question is will an apple watch be able to hold any music?

Why is Apple making this such a huge deal?

Why is Apple making this launch such a huge deal? The only real notable thing that they are doing hardware wise is get with the mass population and making bigger screens. There just has to be something that hasn't been rumored yet that they are planning hardware wise for this phone. If not they are, in my opinion, making to big of a deal out of this.

Well that is ENTIRELY possible to have never heard of them. I haven't heard of half of the worlds famous artists from 40 years ago, have you?

Their first disc was in the 80s so not 40 yet…
Also in 2000 (14 years ago) they had a pretty great cd that had a bunch of hits. In 2004 they had the cd vertigo also.

So yes, they are not current, but they are famous in the last decade. So unless you are a teenager today or iin country where rock is not heard then you would have heard them either from the radio, in the malls, commercials etc etc.

Like most others here.. PLEASE don't let this be true. If they want to play at the end so I can turn it off after the good part then fine.

Just as I felt many of the anti-Beats comments a few months' back were made by people who were biased against Dr. Dre because of the color of his skin, and the anti-Angela Ahrendts comments were due to her gender, I believe many of the anti-U2 comments of the past week are being made by people who are biased against four successful entertainers because of their age.

We live in one of the most enlightened periods of technological development and scientific advances. And yet many of us can't see beyond a person's skin color, gender, or age.

How sad.

afraid not mate, Sony introduced the first Hi-Res audio system back in March, then more systems in April, along with all the Hi-Res supporting devices announced at IFA

I'd definitely buy a Product (Red) iPhone 6. Preloaded with U2's new album? Even better. You girls can hang on for your Rhyanna exclusive iPhone. Or your Dr. Dre badged iWatch. One of the biggest purposes for the iPhone was merging your phone with your music player. U2 have been making great music for decades.

I hope this is just a cameo or the play-off music at the end.
Or maybe hi-res music files as someone above said?
Apple can't think U2 is going to give them any cool.

U2 and Dr. Dre. Awesome artists, but not exactly a way to get hip with the kids in 2014.

How are you qualified to know what Apple are "making too big of a deal" OF, when noone - including you - knows what is but a few hours away?

But I doubt I have never heard of half of the famous American groups that are current? Why would you know a band just because they are famous if that's not your music taste, you would never pay any attention to that genre of music.

U2 - a proper band, formed back in the days when proper consumer electronics were made, both having stood the test of time...

Landfill awaits your disposable iThing, in 5 years time - sorry about that ;)

What a changeable bunch you haters are - your moods and tastes are changed by the mere waft of a butterfly wing. Fickle, shallow and ugly.

U2 existed before your life, during it, and will be known WAY WAY after it.

Being that the band is very close to Jommy Iovine, perhaps U2's new album will debut on Beats and iTunes ahead of a broader release? Throw a few Product Red accessories and a performance in and you have "significant".

U2 Said to Play 'Significant Part' in Tomorrow's Apple Event

Damn. I was hoping it would be a Chris Brown album because I love beating the hell out of my phones.

I believe that U2's involvement is related to Hi-Res audio coming to iTunes. Maybe their new single will come pre-loaded in Hi-Res.
That sounds plausible. Or perhaps an early/exclusive release on a new music streaming service?

Anyway, looking forward to it. While U2's albums after "Achtung Baby" haven't blown me away, the early ones are legendary (and yes, I'm old enough to remember the release of Joshua Tree ;)).
