so a true nothing burger of an update. M1 vs M2? total, 100% meh.

I suspect they only reason they're doing it at all, is so that the fabs only have to produce one generation of chips going forward. Not a bad reason tbh, and they have the good sense to not hype how courageous it is to increment the chip :).

Apple is slowly converting themselves to a services priority company. The hardware is becoming less and less important to them in the sense that they only need a cash cow to carry their services on. It’s more lucrative for them. I’d actually love to see a large scale migration away from their products to shake them up, but that won’t happen as most Apple users are fine with imperceptible changes in hardware as long as things like messages stays locked.

Despite what many will think, hardware has never been Apple's main reason of existence. Go back 20 years and you'll find clips of Steve Jobs describing Apple as a software company, that only makes its own hardware because that's the only way they can guarantee their software works as intended. So nothing much has really changed.

The upcoming 11-inch iPad Pro will feature the same LED Liquid Retina Display found in the current generation model and not the newer mini-LED display technology found in the larger 12.9-inch size, reliable display analyst Ross Young said today.

Replying in a tweet, Young reaffirmed previous rumors that the upcoming 11-inch iPad Pro will not gain the newer mini-LED display technology, meaning customers who want the more advanced display will need to revert to the larger 12.9-inch size.

Early rumors suggested that for the next iPad Pro update, Apple would expand the mini-lED display it introduced on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro in April 2021 to also the smaller 11-inch size. The Liquid Retina XDR display on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro brings extreme dynamic range to the iPad Pro, offering a "stunning visual experience" with more true-to-life details and HDR.

The 11-inch iPad Pro display is an LED Liquid Retina Display that still has many of the same features as the 12.9-inch size but misses out on the extreme dynamic range, higher brightness, and darker blacks. Young said today he expects the upcoming 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pros to feature the same displays as their respective current generation models.

The new iPad Pros are expected to be incremental updates, featuring a new chip and potentially new charging capabilities. The new models will be powered by the M2 Apple silicon chip, offering performance improvements compared to the M1 chip in the current models.

Reputable Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman has reported that Apple is not planning to hold a digital event for these new iPad Pros this month. Instead, Apple is expected to announce the new iPad Pro models in a "matter of days" through a press release and updates on its websites.

Pathetic

Then they will miss me again this year if this turns out to be true. The ****** thing is that there might be enough people like me holding onto the 2018 or older models to lower the sales numbers making Apple not want to invest more in the 11”. They also need to change the name of the iPad if they are going to keep doing this. They need to change them to Pro and Pro Max to differentiate the fact that they are not only different screen sizes. Apple’s been really alienating a lot of their customers that don’t want to get the biggest most unwieldy devices by essentially forcing them into the larger and more expensive model to get ALL of the Pro features.

Guys, M2 iPads won't come for being better then their predecessors but for being cheaper to build. I can imagine that Apple has tons of not 100% fine M2 chips, not great for Macbooks but working perfectly fine when underclocked in iPads. Also, Apple probably gets a discount from TSMC when using more same chips.

Prefer OLED for reading comics and ebooks in bed with the lights off. Mini-LED has too much bloom and doesn’t get dark enough.
Yep. I bought a used OLED Samsung tablet for that use-case. I’m waiting for an OLED iPad mini, but that’ll probably be a long wait.

Probably no need for a new size of mini-led since i suspect this is the last 11" ipad pro...next generation we can see ipad Air to remain as the 11" and the pro models going 12.9" and the new rumoured 14" (same panel as the 14" Mbp) and makes perfect sense from the profit margins and production

That would be sad indeed. The 11” is the size that fits my motorcycle tank bag, which is a dealbreaker for me regarding the 12,9”. And I do want a Pro iPad, I want the best display, 120hz is a must nowadays. I want as good a tech as possible in my iPad since it quite often is my device of choice, the only “computer” I bring on a lot of trips, I’m using it right now with the keyboard folio. I own a M1 MacBook Pro 14”, so if I’m lugging a 12,9” iPad, I might as well bring the MacBook instead.

Pretty please Apple, make the iPad 11” great again. Just a few years ago it had the very best mobile display I had, now it’s the worst…

It’s FAR from the worst. You are being way over dramatic drama queen.

I want to upgrade from my 2018 11” iPad Pro purely for more storage. I started traveling more since the pandemic ended and noticing HD movies and TV shows consume a lot of space. I’ve been holding out for the better screen, so I’m hoping this isn’t true. The 12.9” screen is just a bit too big when I’m already traveling with a 14” MBP for work travel or a 15” Razer Blade for personal travel. Don’t want to have to carry something this big just because Apple hates us.

MiGA!

I never understood the 9.7" iPad Pro when it was introduced in the wake of the OG 12.9" iPad Pro.

I still do not understand the 11" iPad Pro.

An iPad lineup that was:

iPad (10") - low spec
iPad Air (11") - mid spec
iPad Pro (12.9") - top spec

would make so much sense. Yes the Mini isn't there either.

FWIW the 12.9" M1 Pro is my portable daily driver and I wouldn't want anything else. iPad to go + iMac to stay = perfect for my use.
The 11" is the best size. The 12.9 is too big to be portable and is only useful if you are really trying to use it as a laptop replacement. The 11" IPP used to be noticeably better than the Air but the recent Air upgrade did reduce that advantage. The 11" IPP still has a better screen than the Air and the Air is about the same price if you upgrade the storage to match the IPP. Apple really should beef up the specs on the IPP to make it more "pro".

My 2018 IPP is starting to die an early death. The front facing camera died which means that I can't use it for Zoom and one of the speakers will only output a hissing sound. I was hoping for something worth upgrading this month.

Which of my current mobile display’s are the worst then? My iPhone 13 Pro, my MacBook Pro 14” or my iPad Pro 11”?

Either you’re just being a child, or you didn’t read my post properly. 😊

I am more than ready to upgrade from my ageing 10.5 inch stagelit IPP.
But I suspect I will end up regretting buying an M2 IPP if all it is from the M1 is a SOC switch to M2.
The model run will be short and the real update will turn up much sooner. I think I will get an Air instead.

I may have upgraded from the 21 M1 11 inch of this one had the mini led. Without it, it’s a no brainer to keep. I do like to watch movies on my iPad so the benefit is there for me. I use my iPad as a daily driver work device so I may go for a used 12.9 once the new ones come out.

Probably a good choice.
