So?

Every team has to start somewhere. As the sport progresses, eventually there should be more equality among teams.

I don't think that there should be a mercy rule. Other Olympic sports don't have mercy rules.

Also, it wouldn't be fair to people who bought tickets if the game ended after 10 minutes.

I think that a mercy rule isn't too bad of an idea. Maybe 11-0 or the like. As the sport progresses, the mercy rule will be there but won't apply as other teams begin to lessen the margin.

There have been many complaints about this stupid fence and VANOC has said they are going to remove it. Thankfully!

Surely makes a good point. People want to see a full game if they are paying full price.

Sorry for double post but I think this is worth it.

CANADA WINS FIRST GOLD!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the first time Canada has ever won gold on Canadian soil.

What the heck is with a mercy rule. If you want to compete and assuming you make it there legitimately, there is no "mercy", for you. I mean, what the heck? Are these atheletes like babies and we don't want to hurt anyone's feelings? Mercy is for cry babies. And besides, like mentioned, it's a spectator sport too. The ticketholders and advertisers have to get their money's worth.

It also gives everyone a fair chance to beat records and such.

"Mercy Rule". LOL What are we in grade school???

Well done to Aussie Dale Begg-Smith in the moguls.

Went from 4th to 1st then back to silver after a remarkable run from the Canadian. Definitely worthy of the gold medal that one, holy cow!

Yes, Dale is an ex-Canuck but we'll take them where we can get them.

Looks like we could've hosted the Olympics in Smiggins after all judging by the lack of snow. Smiggs definitely had more than Cyprus in mid-winter last year.
:D

I just don't see the point in 18-0 in Hockey.... It's the same thing in American Football... why score in the last two minutes if you have the ball when it is 40-0? Just take a knee and end the game with honor.

Go Canada!!!!! (hides from other Seattle residents)

@Surely: Love the bear. Have to get one for my stepmother. Oh heck, I'll take one to.

As explained above, mercy rule is suspended because you need the goals in case of a points draw.

Yes: ^^this. Really: ^^this.

You should.... it's really cute. I'm going to put it in my baby's room when he/she is born in a few months. Maybe the first word he/she will read will be "Canada".:D

I'm very happy that we won a Gold so early in these Games. Congratulations to Alexandre Bilodeau!!

The media scrutiny would probably get really intense if the Gold draught continued on........

On another note..... does anyone know how to set things up so that I can watch the CTV live streaming coverage in the US?

I understand that and it's a valid point. But at what point does a game become a circus? I turned the TV off when I was watching the Canada-Slovakia game when the score was 9:0. But yeah, I understand if someone still wants to amuse themselves.

Why are you ignoring the posts that explain the reason to keep playing?

Oh I'm not. I understand that the high score may help Canadian team later on. And that's cool. Just from my perspective at that stage the game was boring.

How come you're still up? :)

Wow, this one was huge for Canadians. A newscaster actually thanked Bilodeau for beating Begg-Smith who is somewhat despised here. People change countries but usually express some fondness for their ex-land. Not Begg-Smith, he won't talk to Canadian media. They play up his shady business (malware/spyware producer) and it practically Good vs Evil with Bilodeau as the humble Canadian boy inspired by his disabled brother, vs the turncoat spyware producer. How does Begg-Smith come across in Australian interviews?

Yes unfortunately snow has definitely been missing. Even in Ottawa, we have been setting records for no snow this "winter".

He comes across as totally focussed with very little emotion. He does a hell of a lot behind the scenes with our young team, we've got a new-ish world-class facility at Perisher-Blue and freestyle skiing/snowboarding is pretty strong here as it doesn't require the huge vertical that alpine skiing demands.

Dale is regarded as aloof, unwilling to discuss anything but his skiing in public but is known for putting in a lot of work behind the scenes.

Do I have a curfew that I was unaware of?:D
<---- I live on the West Coast.....

I've seen very boring 1-0 and 3-0 and 4-2 games too. Maybe they should end those early too.:p

Thanks! I'll let you know how it works out when I get a chance to try it.

EDIT: Well, it didn't work. I think that if I was in Canada and I wanted to access a blocked US site (like Hulu), it would work. But it doesn't work in the US to access blocked Canadian sites. I think it assigns a US based IP (that's why it would let you watch hulu), so it wouldn't make a difference for me. Thanks for the suggestion though.:)
