In one of the videos, they said it was called curling because you put a spin on the stone that makes it "curl" toward one side.

Holy crap! The Canadian Men's Hockey Team had a bit of a scare tonight, eh? Jonas Hiller almost stole a game....... good on Sid the Kid.......

That one was really close indeed! I was really expecting them to have a stronger game against the Swiss.

The Russia-Slovakia game though was excellent! It was really close all way through and both teams were lucky to have the superb goal-tending they had.

I love curling because it's pretty strategic. But I'm really mad Jennifer Jones didn't make the women's team. I love her! ;)

Do they have variable weight and friction stones. That would be cool because then they have to like choose different stones for different moves.

Man that RUS/SVK game was awesome! My non-sports-fan roommate was glued to the game. It's a shame that games like this are so late. It could really help grow the hockey fanbase if the folks in the USA had a better shot at seeing excellent hockey on national TV. Instead, we get Pittsburgh games on NBC for weeks on end in the middle of the day when nobody's home.

The Olympic Flame/Cauldron will be flaming during the Paralympic as well. That much I know. My question is will it still be visible (burning or not) after all of the games are done?

I and a few others are planing on making a day trip next week (possibly wed.) to the cauldron and a few other sites. We plan on parking in Richmond and taking the Skytrain. I'm guessing we will have to get an early start. Would anyone here like to suggest how early we need to go? And how crowded during the day is it really?

I know. I'm on the west coast, so 9 pm start for a hockey game doesn't present a problem for me. But for anyone on the east coast it would be way too late. This is quite unfortunate.

It will be really interesting to see how the Russian team does against the Czechs. The victory of the Slovak team potentially pried open the doors for the Czechs. Are they going to open it up all the way? ;)

I am sure looking forward to this Sunday. We have two really great games coming up!

Hollingsworth falls from #1 in the world to 5th place in the Olympics. Very disappointing for her. I saw her interview after and she was crying. So sad :(

I think the worst part about the "Own the podium" is that it sets itself up for disappointment. There is no room for surprise because they set up each athlete for a chance to get a podium spot. They make it sound like every athlete WILL make the podium. It ends up going two ways:

1. The athlete gets on the podium = expected because own the podium said so.
2. The athlete doesn't get on the podium = huge disappointment

There is no option three like other countries:

3. Athlete gets on the podium = unexpected, huge excitement because no one expected that.

the golf of olympics...lol. i saw a pregnant curler the other night, WTH.

So? If anything, that's even more impressive. Pregnancy can cause you to lose your center and your sense of balance.

My wife is pregnant, and she's still going to the gym, lifting weights, doing cardio......

@NathanCH: Yeah, I agree that the Own The Podium thing is pretty stupid. In fact, the Canadian Olympic Committee basically said today that it's not going to happen. Way to go:rolleyes:

Another gold for Canada! Way to go, Jon Montgomery (Men's Skeleton)! :D Too bad the female skeleton competitor did't get the gold too., though but that's ok.

Sorry for double post but I think this is worth it.

CANADA WINS FIRST GOLD!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the first time Canada has ever won gold on Canadian soil.

I sure hope Canada doesn't lose their gold medals after drug test results are in.

Yeah, I'm kidding. See article.

Has that happened to any Canadian gold-medal Olympian since Ben Johnson?

Men's Hockey. Great game. As a Canadian, let me say congratulations to our Southern Cousins. Regardless of the game's final score, that was a great game to watch! :)

So now I guess we have to get our gold medal the hard way.... sigh. :(

Though the silver lining is that there will be some more great games to watch! :D

Today is the last day of sun for the Olympics. Back to rain :(

As happy as I am for Vancouver and Canada for hosting the Winter Olympics, maybe the IOC will think twice before granting the winter games again to a city that is known for lots of rain and mild temperatures in the winter.

Perhaps, but the the Winter Olympics to grow, they need to host it in big cities. Vancouver has been by far the most popular Winter Olympics!

Also, if you think Vancouver is warm, check out Sochi, Russia. :D

I don't think they need to be hosted in big cities to make the games more popular. They just need to have good media coverage. The Vancouver Games are popular because of all the great TV coverage, not because they're in Vancouver.

Well, Sochi is probably not the best choice either then. I don' think that the IOC has a brain between their ears..... they have an empty money bag, and whoever puts the most in, gets the Olympics.

I think they make it more popular to a degree on TV, not much, but certainly a bit. Here in Vancouver, though, it makes a HUGE different. You can host it in a tiny little city, but you wont get massive crowds in the streets.

President of the IOC said these are biggest crowds since Sidney 2000, and they are comparable to that - if not bigger. And yes, Sidney 2000 was summer games! :D

Anyways, I think the bigger the city, the better. Hopefully the next one is hosted on somewhere bigger and colder than Russia.

You dont have to go early. flame site is fairly busy but its about 15 min from skytrain to get to it with the largest crowd. 5 min during weekday
lunch hour is pretty busy but before and after are relatively calm
the buses and trains really keep people moving so not too much waiting.
