New to this thread.

Do any of the reviews of the 15" Retina MacBook Pro actually discuss the defects? Do any reviewers talk about image retention or yellow-tinted displays or creaking cases? Or do they all somehow get units without these defects while we get the broken ones? Or are they exclusively focused on performance?

I have to admit I am kinda disappointed in Anand :(. He doesn't owe us anything but i just feel disappointed that his review didn't come out earlier. I usually read their reviews for all products when i buy them.

I can understand from a business perspective. The new ipads and mac pros were definitely more important and given priority.

Though i think he should be passing the reviews of some of the macs to hellhammer by now. I noticed he's pretty much the main reviewer when it comes to macs. Maybe he needs to just hand the main reins to others. This current rmbp has shown some chinks in his review planning.

I am sure hellhammer and the rest of the crew are more than capable of taking over the main handling the reviews by now.

I have a feeling it is delayed because most everything interesting has already been covered. The case and screen are the same as the 2012 rmbp. 650M is the same chip as the 750M. The macbook airs already got 802.11ac. He did a seperate review about the i7-4950HQ. There just isn't anything new in the rmbp that hasn't already been said.

He has mentioned the rmbp review on his twitter. It was my impression that he was working on it with the mac pro review. with no rmbp review yet I wonder if it will not be until after CES.

Any updates on status of review via twitter etc?

I haven't seen any, it's been crazy with CES for the past days. Didn't expect them to release any rMBP reviews in this period.

Probably somewhere at the end of this week/beginning of next week. It's really coming soon, they aren't going to trow away a finished review that wants to be read by so many people :p

There isn't going to be a review. Even if we buy the traveling excuse (which is doubtful since he released the Mac Pro review a lot sooner in its product cycle), it's a bit late to put one out now. Assuming that Apple still follows the current pattern with the MacBook Pro, there will be a refresh in a couple of months at most--meaning that whatever review he puts out would only be relevant for that amount of time. He's better off writing a review for the next refresh.

A refresh in a couple of months? You mean a minor spec bump (+0,1GHz) like early 2013?

The big refresh will come earliest in June, though for that two things must happen. NVIDIA needs to have Maxwell ready and Apple needs to want Maxwell in their rMBP's. Besides Maxwell, what else can Apple use to take a big step forward? Broadwell is delayed till the end of this year/beginning of 2015.

I don't understand why you are so sure that there isn't going to be any review. Mac Pro got a faster review because it's much more interesting and of course it gets a priority. I'm entirely sure there will be rMBP reviews soon. He already said multiple times he's almost done with it/them. He surely isn't lying to us?

first, I don't see an update coming soon (didn't hear about new intel chips for a spec bump either).
and even if one is coming, it's not going to change the things that make his reviews is good. exact analysis why apple uses both, Intel iris pro AND a dGPU. thoughts about heat and other things. conclusions about pci e storage, wifi ac and maybe a bit more about thunderbolt (driving a 4k display)

there are a lot of reasons why an anand review is important (even to those of us who don't think about buying a new macbook ;) )

and there are some results of the late 2013 rMBP in the nMP review, so I guess the review is nearly finished and will show up soon

I saw Anand's benchmarks of the Haswell rMBP along with the nMP.

I like. :D

I've gotta say, gang... I think the jig is up. I, like many of you, have been keeping a close eye on this thread since November. NOVEMBER. It's mid-January. I was curious about the new rMBP and excited to see some benchmarks. Yes, like many of you, I knew I was probably going to pull the trigger this time regardless of what anyone said to replace some ancient equipment, but it would be nice to go into a big purchase with as much knowledge as possible.

Everyone told me, "Wait for Anand. His reviews are the best... just wait...any day now..." In the meantime, so many other reviews and benches came out... and I still told myself, "Wait until Anand's... he's supposed to be the best." Honestly, the other reviews were pretty vanilla, so I kept waiting and looking forward to the heralded "thorough expert"... checking this thread with every e-mail notification. Look at my user name: I'm PATIENT WAITER for goodness sake.

Up until these last few months, I had no idea who this "Anand" fellow was. So, I read up on him and his company. He's a self-made millionaire, and that's very impressive. He obviously works hard and has achieved tremendous success at a young age. I admire - and envy - those qualities and successes.

But sadly, here's what I've learned: He and/or his people seem to be dishonest, or at the very least, incredibly misleading. Indicating to a fan base that a review is coming... when the reality is, it hasn't and probably won't at this point. (Go ahead and prove me wrong. Please.) Having employees post to this thread, even if on his or her personal time, that something would be definitely coming "before the holidays".... which holiday exactly? President's Day? Martin Luther King Jr. Day? July 4? Maybe we'll see something before Labor Day if we're lucky.

So he's "traveling". Yeah? Seems to have time to post a lot of other reviews since the rMBP was released. And yes, I understand that the Mac Pro and even XBOX are much more important on the spectrum than an incremental update to the rMBP. That's fine and absolutely valid. But I, for one, don't appreciate being led on and lied to. If it's not coming, that's perfectly fine. I'm an adult, I can handle it, and so can the rest of the people here. In fact, you owe me and everyone else here absolutely nothing.

This post probably won't be very popular among the loyal followers and it might even get me hazed out of this forum. And to be clear, I don't mean any disrespect to Anand and his crew either. The work that I have seen is very fine. These words are just one person's opinion and you probably couldn't care less - it's an internet forum post. But perhaps just offer up these loyal fans a little bit of honesty next time. Or even this time - it's not too late. All I know is that I won't be contributing revenue by clicking over to the site anymore.

Cheers,
Patient Waiter -- patiently waited long enough.

I just keep hoping that the reason for the delay is that the review will be so damn interesting that he is quadruple testing all the benchmarks to make sure they're accurate...

I think (as he's said) it's that he's had a lot of other stuff he's had to do.

lets hope not that ces is over, the review may come out.

Actually, I think it's the opposite. The 2013 rMBP is relatively uninteresting, so it's a low priority for Anand to finish.

Except for the fact that he stated in his 2012 reviews how excited he was for the haswell 2013 models. Since then I've assumed he would prioritize these (especially the 13", he said it had potential to be the perfect laptop), but that's not how things have played out.

You are incorrect about broadwell release date,

If you give a certain laptop a bronze award and stating that the next revision will come with just that extra horsepower you need and then not showing up with a review for that next revision, that's just bad.

for me he lost his integrity as an honest reviewer. even though his skills are good.

I've found that Anand is generally more interested in reviewing the technology than the products themselves. The most interesting part of the rMBP is Haswell, but he had already covered Iris Pro Graphics, Haswell CPU performance, Haswell battery life efficiency, Haswell thermals, and etc all before the release of the 2013 rMBP.

Once the rMBP was released, I'm sure Anand was very enthusiastic about it as a consumer, but probably not so much as a reviewer since he had already covered the tech. On the contrary, the 2013 MBA 13 was one of the first laptops to be released with a ULV Haswell chip and Iris graphics, and it unsurprisingly got immediate attention from Anand, along with extra articles comparing the Haswell CPU/GPU performance. Anandtech has always really been about reviewing and analyzing the technology behind the products than just reviewing them from a consumer's point of view.

It's true what you say, Haswell CPU, Iris (Pro) and battery life have been separately covered. But in the end it's about all these things combined in a specific product and how they specifically perform then.

I don't know what to say. If the review(s) aren't coming anymore, he should just say it. I don't even need to know the reason. Like PatientWaiter said

Yes, but my point is that Anandtech is more interested in covering the tech, not the consumer product. Thus the rMBP being a low priority to review.
For example, the only Haswell Ultrabook that was reviewed was the Sony VAIO Pro, probably because it was the first Haswell Ultrabook to be released.

From what I understand, Anand currently does intend on releasing a rMBP review. Now that CES is over, I'd either expect him to release a review soon or to announce/tweet that he doesn't plan to.

/QUOTE]

was it necessary to review the mac pro? aren't these last years cpu's?

plus he reviews the design of the product, and talks alot about the point of view of a customer.
