So you would rather have an ugly notch in the way so you and others know you have an iPhone? I'm sorry, but that is just ridiculous.

Chris may be annoying, but he's bang on. The X was rushed and I personally won't touch it with a ten foot pole.
How does the lack of bezels mean the X was rushed? I’m sure there will be software tweaks as more and more people are using the phone in their daily lives. But the lack of top and bottom bezels seem intentional to me and a signal that what Apple really wants and where it’s going is a phone with NO bezels. As far as not using software to ‘hide’ the notch we don’t know if that was a design decision or a marketing decision or both. The fact is all of Apple’s marketing shots are clearly showing off the notch. It’s like Apple is saying there’s some really amazing technology in this little black bar and we’re not going to hide it. At the end of the day I think average consumers will care about it as much as they cared about the antenna lines on the iPhone 6.

You are over simplifying. The notch is rushed IMO. They decided to go with Face ID as opposed to embedding the fingerprint reader under the glass so they wouldn't be delayed. Removing the home screen button and replacing it with that ugly notch and seemingly forced gestures because there was no other way to get this device out on time.

This is my opinion, but there have been story and story about how they wanted to be first with the fingerprint reader in the screen and they didn't make it. So...we get the notch and Face ID. Rushed.

Steve is rolling over in his grave right now. What a disaster of a product. Unreal.
He was very meticulous about the details and aesthetics. Help make Apple what it is and hope not ' what it was '

They would rather have the notch instead of giving up the screen corners

He's not wrong, you just can't defend it, I really think this phone is going to flop, it's gathering to much controversy and hate and will end up not being cool to own and therefore not sell, it's what everybody is thinking that knows or appreciates good hardware and software.

Ah, the old 'the new iPhone is going to flop'. Let's see who is right, you or Apple.

None of them have a notch that really screws up multimedia and the user experience,

Though all of them, including the iPhone X, have screens with aspect ratios that don't match common video / film standards (16:9 chiefly among them for content you might view on a mobile phone, but there's also 2.39:1 and 1.85:1). Which means there's no video content that you're ever going to be able to view on these full screen without cropping.

Of all my complaints about the iPhone X this isn't one of them. a 40 minute video on this seriously. I can count the number of times on my hands I've browsed web pages in landscape mode on my iPhone, do people really do that?

This, too, is just a personal opinion, but to me the timeline of their alleged attempts to have Touch ID embedded in the display doesn't suggest that they tried to go with just Touch ID at first and when that failed, cooked up Face ID. I mean those rumors regarding problems with making embedded Touch ID work were doing the rounds this summer. That's really late to come up with both the hardware and software for Face ID for a fall release.

A far more likely scenario is that they had planned for both Face ID and Touch ID, but Touch ID didn't make it. That would mean the iPhone X was designed with Face ID in mind, so the sensor housing would have been there for a long time and the display wrapped around it this way all that time. What would have changed was the bottom of the phone, and even then the changes would likely not have been visible - since the plan supposedly was that the display would indicate to you where to press your finger for Touch ID, but aside from that it would have looked just like a regular display.

But, as I said, that's just my opinion and guess. It's what seems likely to me.

The notch is there, because it can be, not because they couldn't figure out a way NOT to have it.

It takes a bit of thought as it's new.

But by all means rant on. If you didn't, this forum would be empty :D

The notch isn’t a big deal and everyone will forget about it 10min into using the phone. If Apple would have made a continuous black line using software it would have looked like the S8. I don’t mind the notch and I think it makes unique from all the other phones.

Not sure if this is the denial stage or the acceptance stage...

you guys would complain either way. if they had done it the other way you would have complained about the bottom and top bezel. also no one knows what steve would and would not approve. please stop saying this. steve produced tons of products that didnt make sense. he was not jesus

Limit the numbers and it wont be a flop. And you can say it sold out in record time - to appease the stockholders.

Phones are all looking the same these days anyway. iPhones will be known as the ones with the ugly notch. Or Gorgeous notch (to the true fanboy).
