"Almost funny." hahaha. That's a great mini review. Would Jupiter Ascending be okay to watch on DVD without being considered a total time-waster?
Mmmmmaybe. If you like special effects, spaceship shootouts and explosions, it might be worth a shot. I wasn't a fan of the acting (especially the villains) or story in this movie.

For a comparison, look at Jaws. The plot: Big shark eats people, people hunt shark, pretty basic. What's left? How memorable, how cunningly dynamic is it?
That is a surprisingly tone deaf statement - - certainly the most disappointing thing I've seen you write on the forum. Jaws is hardly Shakespeare, but the screenplay is an textbook example of how to propel a thriller from start to finish, and the characters are actual characters. There is absolutely no comparison to the weak sauce that passed for a script in Jurassic World.

Re-read my post. The complaint was that there was no story. I was saying this has as much of a story, as Jaws had. I was making the point that while these two movies are very similiar there is a distinct difference that boils down to likability of characters, human resistance to the reality of the situation, the setting, plus plausibility and execution of the story, and mostly the buildup of tension, which in Jaws was a simple mechanism, an unseen threat while a drone of "duh duh duh duh duh duh duh" made us apprehensive. :)

The other issue these days can be CGI, the amount of CGI and how it is handled. When I was watching two large dinos fight, it was more dynamic, but did not feel as good as JP3 when TRex fights Spinosaurus. For Jurrasic World, despite new story elements, the story has all ready been told. This is just a new fancier version, that is not as satisfying as the original. I too feel that Jaws is a clear hit with better cinematography and setups for people coming to dinner. ;) Rotten Tomatoes, audience ratings puts Jaws at 90% and Jurassic World at 85%.

Cool! Maybe I'll find a cheap copy somewhere.

Just saw Cantonen.. lol! Not sure, the english dub kinda ruined it, although still pretty entertaining but that was a bit too much over the top and cheesy for my taste. :D Had fun nonetheless.

On the fence to watch child44 (should be great!) and Victoria in the cinema this week.

Yeah, some like Cantonen can be cheesy, but you'll find that in every genre. I've seen dozens of spaghetti westerns and Italian giallo / horror films that were as full of Cheddar. :)

I'll revise my list of Fu:

Odd Couple (a.k.a. The Eternal Conflict that can get goofy on purpose)
The Victim (humor does not work but core story and final fight are terrific)
Life Gamble (for more of a spaghetti western like film, very little fighting, but excellent as far as all the betrayals that arise when everyone wants this expensive piece of Jade.)
Five Deadly Venoms (Very comic book - the English dub is very over the top, but the film is so much fun no matter what language you watch it in.)
Crippled Avengers (Again, sort of like a Kung Fu horror comic book film, but it's a lot of fun.)
Kid with the Golden Arm (probably the most comic book king fu film on this list. Sort of spaghetti western like also with gold and greed as the reason why the heroes entangle with the title character and his gang.)
Human Lanterns (equal parts giallo / slasher horror film and kung fu film - this is one revenge story that quite unsettling. Almost feels like an Argento or Fulci film even though the audience know who the killer lantern maker is.)
Shanghai 13 A Chinese patriot tries to get a vital document showing Japanese control of China to Shanghai. He's aided by 13 fighters along the route as they attempt to protect him and the document. The fights get more insane with each of the 13 characters, but this is just pure fun from the get go.

3-6 are in constant rotation for me. 7 is very well done and I think you'd enjoy that one since you like horror. I love the inept assassin in HL. He grounded a very dark film full of awful people.

8 is great (especially for the fight scenes featuring the villain called Tiger. It's a good story and one of the few Chang Cheh political movies I can actually understand at this point. (My knowledge of Chinese history is zilch. There's an official UK dvd that I am eagerly waiting to watch so I can toss my bootleg - yes I went multi region again. )

1 is just a lot of fun and 2 has a great core story once you get past the forced humor.

So what I've watched.

Besides Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Life Gamble again. Despite watching Life Gamble for the 5th time, I noticed all kinds of new things in this viewing. With all the back and front stabbing (literally), really good characterization especially given some characters get a super brief intro or screen time. I knew who they were etc. You just do not get that now.

Hmmm....I'll watch the dvd and have low expectations for it then. Thanks for the tip. I don't mind sfx, spaceship shootouts and explosions but the movie still needs to have a good screenplay and production values. I can be forgiving, and willing to 'just be entertained,' if the production values are there, as it seems to be extremely difficult nowadays to make great, memorable films.

Sorry, I wrote that a bit misleading I guess. Cantonen was fine and entertaining, my only gripe was the dub and unfortunately the English one was the only one available. Thx for the list.

The postmen are on strike here so patiently waiting for my copy of Human Lanterns.

I love cheese btw! :D

And I do love Sundance Kid as well! Probably of favorite in that kind of genre (which is it?).

Anybody saw Child44/Kind44 already? Pondering over a visit in the theaters or waiting for distribution. Should be good I guess. Quite on a Hardy trip right now. :D

When Worlds Collide (1951)
As a new star and planet hurtle toward a doomed Earth, a small group of survivalists frantically work to complete the rocket which will take them to their new home.

...Sundance Kid is a western, a buddy movie and perhaps it could be something else too, besides wonderful.

Oops about Cantonen, etc.. Yeah, the dub was pretty craptacular. iTunes has a lot of the Fu (i.e. Shaw Brothers) films on my list available for rental. Not sure how the subtitles / languages are offered in Germany but here in the U.S., the Chinese and English language tracks (and English subs) are often available. Not all have English subs / dialog tracks but the ones I recommend do.

Child 44, I think it was out for a week and then pulled. I couldn't get through the book (and that's a compliment. The author nailed how bleak and oppressive the Soviet era was.) So no I have not seen it and probably won't if it's anything like the book. I hope you like it. :)

Gaaah. Postal Service on strike. The nerve.

Inside Out is another hit from Pixar. Just great. Bring a tissue.

Think this will take top spot at the box office this weekend? I ask because there's a conversation going 3 desks over from mine at work about someone thinking it won't, as barring any sequel, there hasn't been a Pixar movie that was not #1 at the box office. Finding Nemo, Toy Story, Cars, Wall-E, Up, Planes, Incredibles, Brave, Monster's Inc, A Bug's Life, Ratatouille.. all of them have hit #1, which shocked me because I thought that Up and Ratatouille were some of their weaker movies.

But is this is tissue-worthy like Toy Story, I can definitely see this hitting #1. If it does, we're hitting the Drive-In with the kids.

That reminds me: I need to watch Finding Nemo again. Different perspective now that I'm a parent warrants another viewing.

Run All Night (Liam Neeson) - Verdict: I liked it. Sure, over-the-top, but that's to be expected with a Neeson movie. Still entertaining. I'd give it a 6.75/10.

Dumb and Dumber To - Verdict: I haven't laughed that hard in years. The scene where they're holding the smelly drinks is hilarious. There are some nasty scenes too that I couldn't watch. Score: 8.47/10

I'm not exaggerating when I say I felt the same way when I watched Inside Out as when I watched Toy Story almost 20 years ago when i was like 3 or 4 years old. Awesome movie.
