Very recently 'Extraction' and 'Black and Blue'. Thought they were both entertaining. I would struggle to find a third unless going back over movies I have watched in the more distant past. Not a lot of new Netflix releases I fancy watching. Will probably go back to a TV series again soon.

What movie have you seen and more importantly was it any good? :)

Watched Shutter Island, a psychological thriller. It just did not click for me. Without giving the story away, it took a turn I did not expect, which is not necessarily bad, but the execution was below my expectations.

On the other hand we just finished up the Lord of the Rings trilogy for the umpteenth time. You don't see epics like this very often. :)

If you ever wondered how they made 6' tall actors hobbit size, besides using short doubles for long shots, this is another method- forced perspective.

I‘ve watched Wolfen, The Howling and An American Werewolf in London.

For movies like that, if I end up owning it via a purchase from Apple, I've become fond of the iTunes option buried in the command-i tabs someplace to raise the normal volume and file it so it doesn't cause me to have to jack the volume on it next time around.

What I really don't like: films where the engineering is just wrong and you can't settle on a volume for the whole movie unless alternately damaging your ears AND wondering "what did he just say?"
wait.. command i? Any chance you'd give me s short tutorial on how to do that? :)

And what did you think of them? I’ve not seen Wolfen, but between The Howling and American Werewolf in London, which are both good, at least I thought so when they came out, I’d give the edge to American Werewolf. :)

What do you mean raise the normal volume? Is this changing the relative noise scale from the low to the high?

i found this article:
Enable Your TV's Auto Volume

But I have been using a low end Yamaha Sound Bar which turns off the TV’s speakers as a source, but still the article may help the sound source coming from the TV.

I found a volume leveling setting on my Visio TV under Menu>Audio that had been turned off and is now Set to auto, let’s see...

Click on the track in the main panel (song list view) and then command-i brings up a panel of track info with some tabs in it. The "options" tab has the volume adjustment slider.
EDIT: it works on movie tracks as well... I forgot I was responding in a film-oriented thread.

The option to adjust a track's "normal" volume seems like a pre-amp effect. When you raise that "normal volume" slider in the Options tab for a track's info and OK it (save it), it doesn't visibly change the location of the iTunes basic volume/amp slider in the iTunes library window to left of the "Now Playing" track info for the film or music... it just makes that same location represent a louder volume. If you're playing the track while doing the adjustment, iTunes lowers the volume you hear in your headset or speakers though, and you will have to raise that to your preference, but you'll notice that you now have more room at the louder end of volume-up efforts.

And you could hear the dialogue?

I liked it as well. Not great, but not bad.

PM me what you thought you saw at the end...?

I haven’t watched Extraction yet. But I’ll be sure to jack up the Sound on my twin JBL 5.1 surround sound system when I do. That should fix any dialogue/audio issues, even to the point where my neighbors next-door should probably be able to hear every word and sound effect.😁

What is a "twin" 5.1/Dolby setup? Anyway, if you're not doing Atmos (or at least 7.1), you're doing it wrong :D

Ha ha ha. Nailed it. I’m looking for a solid Atmos system for my home theatre. Any suggestion?!

Are you buying just supplemental Atmos speakers or a full matched system? A complete speaker system by Klipsch is pretty outstanding, but their component Atmos products get excellent reviews as well, a complete system like the R-820F (center, rears, front (mains), front (Atmos), sub, ~$2600 at MSRP, but usually you can find a pretty notable discount).

AVRs, I'm seeing the Onkyo TX-NR696, Sony STR-DN1080 getting great reviews in the $500-ish range, 1000+ products like the Denon AVR-X3600H

Shopping around, you could put together everything < $3K, and it would be outstanding, and the next major price plateau is _way_ up there.

Extraction (2020 Netflix)- 71% Audience Score R.T. Chris Hemsworth graduates from Avenger to certified bad ass in this tale about a soldier for hire, sent on a mission to rescue a drug lord’s abducted child. It’s a hard core action bloodbath in a sea of bodies. :) 👍
@akash.nu, you’ll find this relaxing. 😆

I was attracted enough by the brief description and poster shot of the mercenary and the boy (on the Netflix website) to take a look at the trailer for Extraction. For some reason I really "wanted to want to watch" this movie.

But wow. "Hardcore action bloodbath in a sea of bodies" does seem to nail it. Think I might have to give the film a pass, although I suppose they packed as much of the action as they could into that trailer. Please tell me there are a few extended moments of quiet. I guess there must be, for the several remarks in this thread about the audio volume issues.

It's possible I'm getting too old to hope that some of the better scripts of action-adventure flicks made in the past few decades might deserve and get remakes sometime, with a little less attention to the endless gore and body counts. Would be nice to have deeper development of the characters whose scripting is now sometimes so constrained to portrayal of committing or enduring violence --in between dashes of lust, regret, confusion, tenderness or whatever else it takes to make the next epic slaughter scene appear even more addictively dramatic than the one before it.

My apologies to cast and crew of Extraction if --and as I do wonder-- my impression of the film is wrongly based on the trailer possibly having presented a brutally condensed hash of the movie's "action" scenes, just to induce the perhaps more jaded of its potential fans to watch the thing. I know that what happens between production of film in the can and the appearance of film trailer at point of distribution to audience can be kind of like writing for a newspaper where the reporter is not who edits a preview or creates the headline... or like writing a novel when sometimes it's the book publisher gets last word on the eyeball-catching book jacket or even its title. It has to be frustrating to know that the marketers and bean counters will have the last word.

i.e., I'm watching this because Chris Hemsworth is ~*~ dreamy ~*~

:D

I was drawn to the kid and the story synopsis. But yeah when I look at that poster shot again, Hemsworth probably curls my toes some. Go mind your own biz! 😉

Did you watch the flick? Is it nonstop killing or once in awhile some other redeeming features?

watch it, the ending is not what I expected, more movies need to end this way.
he actually dies

Mine too, and I'm, er, I guess mostly straight ... I guess less so when I look at him :D

BTW, the 2015 Vacation movie / sequel (with Ed Helms as Rusty) is mostly pretty fun, but Hemsworth (who plays grown-up-Audrey's husband) is hysterical, he's only in about 15 minutes, and a chunk of that contributes to the R rating, but it's really fun, and you can tell he's having a blast.

Sea Fever, started a little stiff but by the end I was invested. Also lined up perfectly well with all the stuff in the world now even though I didn't expect it to (nor did I select it because I wanted something to) at the start.

You guys are too much. May have exhausted my entertainment quota for the day without even logging into any streaming sites. Have a nice weekend. I'll let you know what I think of the movie after I watch it.
