Public Enemies [2009]

One of my favorite directors is Michael Mann. I’m sure you’re familiar with some of his work with [Heat, Collateral, Miami Vice, Black Hat] just to name a few. Probably one of my top directors, and what I like about his style of film, is his camera angles are probably the most unique in the film industry how he follows the character ‘from behind’ to give you a sense of the scene like you’re actually present

When I was on a business, I actually got to visit some of the movie sets when they were filming, which was really unique to see the transformation of the art direction to show that time period from 1930 era.

The movie itself shows you the life of John Dillinger highlighting some His heists and law encounters. So I really won’t discuss much about the narrative, but I do think this was one of Johnny Depp’s best performances and Christian Bale was awesome. I chose the movie poster that you see above with Marion Cotillard, because she was so impressive in this movie, [which I really liked her performance in Inception and The Dark Knight Rises.]

The musical score has some really powerful pieces, which was composed by Ellie Goldenthal. I have a few tracks on my Amazon prime music account.

Remaining 90 minutes are even worse. You should definitely check the fight with the Cats-like (“Cats” as in the awful movie) villain towards the end. It’s so bad it’s almost enjoyable.

An hour into Wonder Woman I was wondering if I was watching a Wonder Woman movie. WW didn't really appear until about half way through, which is probably why I saw WW84 has a bit of a hallmark film.

Yeah John Hughes was in his hey day back then for sure...

Started this one last night:

So far a pretty decent film.

I don't want to give too much away but, sci-fi, apocalyptic, dialysis equipment, astronauts, meteor strike, etc etc
I thought Midnight Sky was terrible; Clooney should leave the producing and directing to the Coen brothers. "O Brother Where art Thou?" is the best, but they are all great.

Wonder Woman 1984, I stopped at 72 minutes, but not because it was unbearable, but because I had to go to the hospital. It was ok, and although I do prefer the previous one, I was enjoying it.

Didn't care for the movie as a whole... Liked Pine's character but the ending was bad and the overall pace, acting, and plot of the movie was almost unwatchable... I am so glad I didn't purchase a ticket or two for this one. IMHO, Patty Jenkins (SP? Director of both movies) hasn't really done the character justice.

I think Gal Gadot is an excellent WW, however the movies have been so lack luster and subpar...

The Midnight Sky [2020]

I tuned in because I like George Clooney, and I don’t think I haven’t seen a movie he’s not good in. And he still is good in this movie, but overall I found the Midnight Sky to be a somber, melo-dramatic movie with a few climax points, but overall I didn’t really care for it. Not that it was a bad movie, it was just flat in its tempo. I actually was able to predict what the plot twist was within the first 30 minutes of what the ending would be for the movie, and maybe that’s one of the reasons why I didn’t care for it as much.

Also, the musical score for the movie was terrible, I think if it would’ve had a stronger composed piece of background music, it probably would help boost certain scenes, but everything sounded so generic, (I’ve always said, that a musical score is just as equally good as to the picture to immerse the viewer.)

Without saying too much, the movie is about a scientist who is dying and lives in the Arctic, but he wants to contact a space crew about a disaster.

The movie itself was Produced/directed by Clooney, but Has potential to be a more dynamic film, but it’s a sub-par rental at best.

Soul (2020) by Pixar. Great and meaningful movie. Recommended.
Pretty blown away by this movie. It felt like a Pixar movie made for adults. 11/10. I’m just amazed by the talent that goes into Pixar’s efforts. Visually as stunning as Coco, with a similar story theme, now that I reflect on it. But man, they just pulled out the brakes and let their creativity run wild in this one. Not gonna lie, I cried at the end. However, I also cried watching Coco, Wall-E, etc, so good job Pixar.

Stuber. Action/comedy. I thought it was pretty decent.

Mystery Men. Also comedy/Action. This was a gift, I'm sure I'll watch it again.

I recently rented the movie Predestination from 2014, which I'd never seen before. It stars Ethan Hawke as a "temporal agent" on a mission. The plot is so wonderfully mind-bending that I rented it again to catch more nuances. I guess I should have purchased it instead, but I rarely want to re-watch movies.

If you like time travel plots, as I do, and want one that really makes you think, I recommend it.

It's based on a science fiction short story, and there are online discussions that provide the plot details, but don't read them. Even IMDB says too much about the plot. The less you know in advance, the better!
I watched "Predestination" again the other day. It was my 7th time this year viewing this same wonderful film (I spot new hints every time), but it was the first viewing for some of my family members. I enjoyed watching their jaws drop at certain surprises.

Is it the one based on Heinlein's "All you zombies"?

I love that time travel story!

Well I hope you bought it and aren’t renting it anymore. I’ll keep an eye out for it. Not on Prime or Netflix right now.

Yes, that's the one.

I first found it (temporarily) available for no extra charge on some streaming service. Then I rented it and watched it twice. Then I bought a copy.

I'm glad I didn't pay to watch this — I have an HBO Max subscription. There were enjoyable sequences, notably the opening with young Diana competing. But most of the rest made no sense, with multiple plot holes and lazy story-telling.

  • If Steve had to come back as WW's love interest, why did he inhabit another random man's body? And what happened to the man while Steve was there?
  • Piloting a jet is more than just knowing about air and wind, and it wouldn't have made it to Egypt even fully-fueled.
  • What did Diana/WW do in the years between the first and second movie timelines, and what was the connection with the contest at the beginning?
  • The whole Maxwell Lord "make me a wishing stone" plot line was too contrived. And why did it take so long for his son's wish to be granted?
  • The nuclear missiles didn't disappear, they disintegrated. That itself would be a problem.
  • I got the point about power corrupting Barbara Minerva, but turning her into a half cheetah to satisfy her desire to become an apex predator was unintentionally comical. Her fight scene with WW was way too dark, and ultimately too easy for WW to win.
  • I can understand the Lasso of Truth being used for swinging and moving objects. But grabbing lighting bolts and clouds?
  • The writers could have done much more with the 1980s setting. As it is, they just had some fun with Steve's clothing. (I don't know if the choice of 1984 was meant to link to the George Orwell novel, but if so it wasn't well done.)
  • I would hope the Smithsonian is more careful with artifacts than portrayed.
  • The universal takeover of TV broadcasts didn't make sense. Why would it affect every display screen in the world? Would non-English-speaking people have understood what Lord was saying?
