Two for the Money [2005]

If you’re a betting man, you’d probably like this movie.

I can honestly say I don’t have very good luck when it comes to betting, (and I found that out last year during the NFL playoffs). And that’s primarily what this movie is about, is Matthew McConaughey‘s character is someone who has had very good luck with predicting football games to win large, and that’s when he’s recruited by Al Pacino in the film to work for him as a sports agent with predictions to win big or lose it all.

The movie itself has quite a bit of criticism, but the backstory is actually really good and I think that’s what makes this movie kind of a two-fold story about someone who’s losing it all and somebody that that has to risk everything.

But I do think Matthew McConaughey and Al Pacino worked really well together with the right chemistry. I’ve watched this one a few times, it’s a decent, yet simple plot point film.

That was very good!

The Wrestler [2008]

I watched this one three times in the last five days, it’s so good. It’s a very raw and gnarly movie, showing you the life of a 80s wrestler that can’t let that lifestyle go, but can’t really seem to get traction on his own life, struggling with injuries, relationship problems and addiction. There’s just so many good scenes in this movie, I can’t pick one, the whole thing is just written so well.

I was Never into the whole WWE era, but this movie kind of shows you the retrospect what it was like probably back in the day when it was wildly popular.

Marisa Tomei and Mickey Rourke are perfect. The Director, (Darren Aronofsky) really put this film in perspective that it’s dark, funny in the right scenarios and dramatic when it needs to be, he’s also the same Director behind the movie ‘Black Swan’.

Highly recommend.

I just saw The Impossible, an excellent account of the 2004 tsunami that killed more than 200,000 people. It's based on the experience of María Belón, a Spanish physician, her husband, and their three sons, though they were portrayed as English.

The film focuses on the family's travails in Thailand in the aftermath of the disaster. Naomi Watts is excellent as Maria; she received a Best Actress Academy Award nomination for her performance. Ewan McGregor also does well as the father. Th eldest son, Lucas, is played by Tom Holland in his first major role, pre Spiderman.

The missus and I watched Hunt For The Wilderpeople last night and it was so much fun. Lots of dark, awkward humor. The boy, Julian Dennison, really carries the story as the main character but Sam Neil is just perfect as his deadpan foil. Directed and written by Taika Waititi, it’s no surprise that I loved this movie. His sense of humor is just so spot on for me. In my opinion, he singlehandedly redeemed the Thor movies with Ragnarok. Watch Hunt For The Wilderpeople with confidence. If it doesn’t hook you in the first 15 minutes, you can move on because that is how consistent the tone of the movie is. It’s on Netflix, what have you got to lose if you already subscribe?

Shoutout to @pachyderm for the recommendation. Wouldn’t have seen it otherwise.

Great Movie 👍 - I am a Mickey Rourke fan :)

I also really Liked "Kill Shot" - had to watch it again last night when I saw your post - it did not get much attention and had poor reviews - not sure why - but I realy enjoyed it when it came out in 2009 and it still is very enjoyable (IMHO)

Never into WW anything (did 'real' wrestling in school) but this IS a good movie. Saw it some years ago and would agree with you.

Promising Young Woman [2020]

Stellar movie.

This was probably one of the most underrated and interesting films I watched this year to end 2020. It’s about female [Carey Mulligan] who acts under the illusion she’s intoxicated at bars, only to troll rapist in bars, they try to lure her home, only to find out that she’s really not intoxicated. The reason she does this, she has a friend that was sexually assaulted that was in college with her, and ultimately she’s out for revenge on the males who are responsible.

It’s such a clever take on what we see as males in society that take advantage of women in the bar scene, but this movie portrays the opposite, where a female actually takes advantage of the men, but in a different respect. The plot itself is actually really cunning, and takes a few twists/turns that I didn’t see coming.

There’s tons of cameo appearances from other well-known actors in this movie, it’s partially directed by Margot Robbie (Wolf of wall street, Blonde Bombshell).

If you’re not familiar with Carey Mulligan being the lead female role, she was also in the movie ‘Drive’ and Wall street: Money never sleeps.

I'm working on a volunteer book project in the same period, and was reminded how much I liked this movie. My fascination with David Thewlis' facial expressions knows no bounds.

Watching The Devil's Advocate (1997), directed by Taylor Hackford, on the TV.

It's been a while, but I still like this one quite a bit. Possibly a bit of nostalgia sprinkled in there, but the movie still works. Al Pacino is himself in his usual wonderfully over the top way, and Keanu Reeves is not quite as wooden as he could be. And that's a compliment, he does good work with the role he has in this one. The last sequence with both Pacino and Reeves in Milton's penthouse, the scene I'm currently watching, is still great, some really good lines written for both Pacino and Reeves. And that sculpture just works.
