My wife and I just watched Blast from the Past (1999).

It is no Citizen Kane, but I found it to be funny and enjoyable.

My wife suggested it, as she really likes both Brendan Fraser and Alicia Silverstone. It was interesting to see Nathan Fillion as an unlikable jerk.

Midnight Special [2016]

I think as kids, we all grew up wanting ‘special powers’. (I mean, I’m 35 and I still think I have special powers.😁) And that’s what Midnight Special is about a little boy (Jaden Liebenhauer <—He was in ‘IT’) that has these powers with the ability to change and alter the world around him, and his father [played by Michael Shannon] is trying to keep him on the run and protect him from the government.

I’ve watched hundreds of sci-fi movies, but this one is at the top for me with such a unique storyline, Great acting on all accounts and CGI is perfect demonstrating what these special powers can do, almost portraying a sense of realism to the viewer.

Other than the other two cast members I mentioned above, it has Adam Driver, Kristen Dunst and Joel Edgerton, all three very good actors in their own right.

But what’s most impressive what I really like about the movie, is the musical score composed by David Wingo, is by far one of thee best composed musical scores any sci-fi movie I’ve ever come across. As matter fact, I actually have it downloaded on my Amazon music Prime account and listen to it regularly. Just brilliant and moving, which really locks in the viewer when you’re watching this film. Anybody that’s watched this film, definitely has taken notice on the musical score, it’s that good.

If you’re in a sci-fi films or anything of that genre, and you haven’t watched this film, prioritize this one.

...But you already watched and wrote about this film before last year, and now déjà vu. Is old age catching on you Huntn?😁

I guess it happens to all of us (@Huntn) :) Your review of the same movie from 2016 :D (Though the storyline went from "decent" to "unique")

Nice recommendation.

I actually attempted to watch this one night years ago, and fell asleep partially through it.

Tonight I gave it my full attention, and really enjoyed it.

There were some plot holes, but it was worth it to suspend disbelief and just enjoy the show for this one.

Awesome. Glad you enjoyed it. I enjoy movies that really try to push the narrative of being imaginative, and this is one of those movies that really is different from anything else out there. One of my favorite sci-fI films to date. Props to the directing and actors in this one.

Just watched Invictus (Morgan Freeman, Matt Damon). It's set just after Nelson Mandela is released from prison in 1995 and focuses on his struggle to reunite South Africa after winning the election. At the same time, South Africa is hosting the 1995 Rugby World Cup and Mandela tries to get blacks and whites to unite behind the Springboks (the South African international rugby team). Freeman unsurprisingly plays Mandela, a role he was perhaps tailor made for and Damon plays Francois Pienaar, the captain of the Springboks.

It's based on a book by John Carlin (Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Made a Nation) although the film only really uses the second half of the book, from what I remember after reading it.

I really enjoyed it as a big rugby fan and also because it's a period of time I lived through and remember. Both Freeman and Damon were nominated for Oscars, although neither won.

My wife and I watched Clear and Present Danger a couple of nights ago. It was ok at best. Not nearly as good as the book.

This movie was not anyone's best work. The adaptation from the book suffers a bit, and the pacing seems off. There are also a few gratuitous rape scenes that could have just been implied, and left the same impact.

All of these make it. A tough rewatch.

However wow what a beautiful production it is. The world they realized is so very compelling visually. The actors do their best to slog through the material, and there are actually some stretches of brilliance.

If you haven't seen it, it is worth a watch.

Free on Netflix.

On the playlist;

Onibaba (1964)

A dark slow burn fever dream that you simply need to watch and decide on for yourself...

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
1615317785004.png

Remains to be a science fiction masterpiece crafted by the best, unsurpassed by few. A film that asks questions of the viewer that even today we are forced to ponder on.

Fire In the Sky (1993)
1615317909426.png

Surprisingly disturbing, personally I have no conclusion as to what really happened. What I do believe is that those involved believe...

Taste the Blood of Dracula (1970)
1615318092232.png

Usual Hammer vampire fare, nor the worse for it :)

Quatermass and the Pit (1967)

If your looking to watch Quatermass and the Pit, skip this one and seek out the original TV series by BBC beautifully compiled into a full length feature (3hr). The Hammer release isn't bad for the time by any means, the original material is simply far richer, deeper and more compelling.

Original 2009 film is the better in many respect's, more aligned with the book IMO. Leave's the viewer to decide for themselves as the plot unravels.

You'll likely be dealing with subtitles, however if you get into the film you'll be hooked and wont remotely care...

love this version

I was extremely bored last night and struggling to find something to watch. Then I noticed that Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019) had been added to Netflix recently, so I thought what the heck and watched that.

Utterly ridiculous, and equally entertaining. Full of physics that would be out of place in even most video games, but for what (I hope) they were going for, they nailed it. The most baffling thing is that even at a whopping 135 minutes it really didn't feel all that long, then again it's not like there were long stretches of dialogue or anything else in the way of lulls in the movie, mostly just explosions, car chases, fist fights, witty quips and just general mayhem. One thing I do regret is watching this for the first time completely sober.

I really dug this version. While I have not read the book, this movie was good. The first version was also really good, if you haven't seen that one.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA... I have only seen the previews and from that alone, the movie looked off the wall. However, I still want to watch it only because the scenes that I have seen look fun.
