I hadn’t heard that the event is being held in New York, which they typically only do when they’re talking services, such as the introduction of Apple TV+. What service could possibly be brought up in a Mac event? The only thing I can think of is that Apple is finally going to make a concerted effort in AAA gaming. Since they pushed AAA games for the A17 Pro, those graphics cores will probably be enhanced for the M3 versions. My prediction is that not only M3 Macs will be introduced, but Apple’s stream will bring up several game developers.

What to expect? People who spent a ton on a MBP in January to be disappointed? I would be no matter the explanation. I’ll still watch even though I’m not in the market for any more Macs this year.
Ive been buying a mac about every other month for the last 5 years, trying out all the models I’ve ever been interested in owning. To date, none are newer than the 2019 model year since AS won’t run the software I need for work, knocking new Apples to the lowest priority purchasing tier. But, three generations in is probably long enough to wait, the performance payoff should be well-earned. I’ll try an m3 mac mini to run FCP & take that load off the i9’s.

It shouldn't be lower end or higher end… its just a different category for people doing different work. Someone wanting a thin and light laptop for office productivity, videoconferencing and web browsing isnt going to buy a Macbook Pro over a MBA anyday. Its a waste of money and youd be better off spending it on something else useful.
But it is higher end versus lower end. MBA costs half as much and is lesser in every possible way except weight. It is not "just a different category for people doing different work." MBA provides lesser display and lesser speakers, for instance, no matter what work is performed.

That is not to say that many folks, perhaps most, should not buy the lower end MBA.

Quite the opposite, a working environment that cannot handle the complexity that is the real world must be replaced with something better and more versatile.
For example, most engineer discipline would squarely reject the idea of using iPad entirely to do their design work.
Most engineering disciplines will reject MacOS as well due to lack of software.

And it is passively cooled, has better ergonomics, longer battery life and exactly same performance until forced into throttling, which may occur after 6-8 minutes of heavy load. I'm using it as my main workstation for development. I'd choose MBA over MBP even if they were at the same price tag. For me MBA is way better laptop overall than MBP, even after taking price out of equation.

I don’t see the connection here, Apple hasn’t held a ‘live‘ event in years.
That's a great point, all of these news outlets are running this story but in reality it doesn't make sense since it's recorded. I haven't heard of an ongoing IN person event. Again fascinating. I wonder if they're just testing a new time for streams since much of the US is working during their regular streams.

All I’m expecting to see tomorrow night are M3 iMac, MacBook Pros and possibly some peripherals. I would be (pleasantly) surprised to see iPad 11 because I suspect they’ll hold off on that until the Spring to clear out more iPad 9 inventory. Spring is when I expect us to see release of the M3 MacBook Airs 13.6 and 15.

Later 2024 will see upgraded Mac Mini, Mac Studio and iPad Pro and Air.
You are likely correct but the timing is lousy in my opinion. Nothing today/tomorrow products reveals are suitable to put under the Christmas tree. iPads, MacBook Air etc are, by contrast, and these comes in the spring??? Alternatively, the Mac sales are so poor so it needs special attention but I doubt that.

The disappointment is the lack of innovation at Apple.
Look at all the other laptop manufacturers. They are releasing new form factors, new features, new visual looks & honestly have started to close the gap on quality/luxury that Apple offered.

That being said, I could never use WindowsOS and even though the Mac OS is boring - it is still simpler than clunky windows (although the rate Apple is going, they will catch up soon)
LOL you serious?

To name one;
the M processor series is a game changer for the whole computer industry performance/watt.

What form factors you talking about?
Netbooks? Touchscreens? Inch-thick gaming laptops? What exactly are you envious of?

If you are after a 10inch netbook, feel free to buy one and give us a review man :)

Such a tired take. So what, there is always new tech coming.

I have the original AppleTV 4K from 2018. I went to the Apple Store on 10/28/23 to buy a new AppleTV because I wanted the new remote and my AppleTV will freeze a lot. When I went to buy the AppleTV, the employee asked if I was upgrading or buying an AppleTV for the first time. Then he asked if I needed it this weekend or could wait. Then he said, you know there’s an event on Monday, you should wait until after the event if you can.

Based on that experience at the Apple Store and the event time being during the 8 pm eastern time primetime TV slot (usually events are on Tuesdays at 10 am pacific time), I think the event is related to TV and possibly gaming. Apple is raising prices on AppleTV+ and other services. I think it will be TV/gaming hardware, but mostly focused on software/services due to the time of the event. Possibly live TV related services. I’m sure they would love for people to experience sporting events live through the Vision Pro in an experience that makes you feel like you’re there. Maybe something like that will be incorporated.

It just doesn’t make sense for Apple to break from their usual announcement time (10 am pacific) to announce their usual hardware (M3 chip in MacBook). It’s got to be something unusual (based on unusual time) and tv/services (growing portion of revenue) makes a lot of sense.

A bit pedantic of me, but 5PM is not "nighttime".

It's commute time, at least out here where Apple HQ is located.

It's also the start of the workday in Japan, Korea... all the way down to Australia.
Primetime TV starts at 8 eastern/7 central (which is 5 pm pacific). Maybe it is nighttime because it’s referencing east coast time and tv, not the boring Mac refresh that everyone thinks is going to have Apple create a brand new time and way of delivering an announcement. 🧐

Apple hasn’t held a ‘live‘ event in years.
But they do invite warm-body "influencers" to show up and play with the new gadgets.

It seems a small number of said influencers on the US East coast have been invited to NYC for such a hands-on, apparently watching the event as broadcast and then being allowed to fondle some things.

At least.

When the announcement came I immediately thought it was timed for the business day in Japan/Korea/China.

Perhaps Apple is going to push for a "gaming" (a word I dislike immensely) ecosystem expansion. I thought it rather novel of Apple to add a gaming mode to Sonoma. The timing of that too is rather suggestive.

Improved performance - with same or even slightly improved battery endurance - is a good, if not outstanding, jump. It's a cup half full, not empty, boost. My question is; is the battery – smaller, lighter, less polluting, happening while performance is even moderately improved? That's great, if not exactly eye-opening.

But, but, but .... all the youtubers said it was s good for nothing, throtteling mess, that can only do very light web-browsing and emails ... now I'm all confused and just a bit scared 🤣.

j/k, obviously, love the mac air 15" which is my 3rd ranked computer of all time
(only outdone by the Amiga 500 and mac mini m1).

“Aside from the ‌iMac‌ and refreshed 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, there are no other rumors that suggest other devices are getting updated”

No rumours predicted this event or any new Macs, in fact all the rumours stated the total opposite, so I really wouldn’t rely on them being accurate in the slightest for what Apple will announce today. It’s like the 6th gen iPad Mini all, over again. New Macs obviously but what else beyond that, no one knows or what Macs will be updated either.

Saying "Apple never was a company who cares about expansion slots" is untrue. Circa 2004 my G5 tower at the time was full of slots for RAM, HDD, etc., and the earlier G4 towers were similar.
But those towers were a one-off exception to the rule. For the most part of Apple’s history Steve Jobs’ vision of the computer as an enclosed sealed appliance reigned supreme. It’s not just a technical limitation of tighter integration and a unified memory architecture, which enables superior performance. It’s an ongoing philosophical dispute about how much tinkering with the hardware configuration should be allowed. And Apple’s usual answer is none!

Let’s be honest, this website and all analysts are utterly clueless about what will be announced today. This article today states no new iPads yet this one yesterday claimed possibly new iPad Mini:

So I’ll ignore ALL the so called predictions, they have been a bit of a disaster since the Apple Watch Series 8 total redesign and iPad Mini 6th gen launch date fiascos. With this site and analysts being 100% wrong in both cases.

What do you all think the chances are of them announcing the m3 Ipad Pro’s? Or ultimately do you think that gets announced in the spring?

If the event is 2 hours long as the calendar entry Apple will make for you suggests then I believe there is a good chance.
