Between the new iPad and the new iPhone, there probably isn't enough productive capacity for the iMac. It's probably next in the queue.

That's not how it works. Different assembly lines and manufacturers. It's not likely Apple would face a production problem. Money talks. Supply/component constraints are another issue though.

I'm glad I didn't wait - it would've been since early April! even if one comes later this year that's a long time to wait. I would've kept my 2011 refurb iMac, which I bought in April, if it didn't have two bum USB ports. also I had a really old pc and everything pointed me in the direction of just getting a new pc and it's been working okay for me. I have got a lot of work done that would've sucked to get months behind on. maybe next time, a few years from now, if apple is still making desktops. but windows 8 looks decent. who knows?

Unless you really need a desktop with the form factor of an iMac, just build a hackintosh because Apple is too busy printing money

Supply/component constraints...which are inputs to production. Hence, productive capacity.

ah well, I've left the waiting game.
Picked up a mint condition (2011) mid 2010 i7 2.93 8GB 1TB 27" for the right money on Gumtree yesterday.
Just run a nice clean ML install and getting things shifted over. Will explore an SSD in due course.

So that'll be me.
Sorry shareholders, none of my money for while.. it was just too long for my needs.

It's been a few weeks since I gave up waiting and bought a 13" Air. I thought it would be a compromise after two decades using desktop Macs, but I actually prefer it and wouldn't go back to a desktop now.

They got you where they want you :)
But what about people with the real need for a desktop computer?

Don't expect an iMac update anytime soon

I'm inclined to think the release will come next year (2013) -- think about it... Apple is advertising the current iMacs for students going to or retuning to college.... How would the students feel about apple.... if shortly after buying a stock iMac a new version comes out.

I Have a mid 2010 which I plan on keeping and an 2006 which needs an update so I can use current OS.

Waiting and hoping the release comes soon......

Haha, that made me laugh, sorry. How would they feel? I don't think they "care" about students, profits, they're a huge corporation. This is one of the tactics to keep profits to themselves and it makes sense. Want the newest tech? Pay for it.

I mean you US customers should be glad for your back-to-school promos and black friday sales as rest of the world don't have this advantage apart from student discounts and rarely some sale of old stock. Just ask any brazilian on this forum how he feels about the prices. 2000 USD for entry level iMac without Apple Care (wonder if they can even get it there)... don't even get me started on iOS devices.

Yeah....like apple ever has held back on trying to sell stuff near a new release. Of course they want to sell as many iMacs possible until the day the new one comes out. Even if that would mean selling to a bunch of students and then release a new model the day after...it's how it has always been.
and fact is, those who buy the current model now is either so uninformed, don't care or need it so bad they will be happy anyway. A lot of people don't follow hardware updates and wouldn't even notice if it was a new or old model.

They didn't care how I felt when I bought a MacBook Pro mid February of 2008 only to release the 2008 model on 2/26/2008.

They didn't care how I felt when I bought an iMac mid July of 2010 only to release the 2010 model on 7/27/10.

I've been in that situation twice where I just bought a Mac and had the replacing model come out a week later. Luckily I was able to exchange each time. I thought I would've learned my lesson after the 2008 MacBook Pro ordeal, but I didn't. It's funny too because if I didn't stumble upon this website the day after I bought my MacBook Pro I would've had no clue a spec bump was coming. Ignorance is bliss I suppose!

This time I am waiting however.

So you appear to be the solution... When is your break down gotta buy date. Two weeks after iMac 2012 will hit. :D

I "lost" my 21" iMac recently and needed a new one to keep going on my app development pursuit. I bought a "bridge" to the iMac refresh. It's the base line 13" MBP, just enough to get 'er done and keep me in budget until the new iMac comes along. I like it, but make no mistake . . . once I do get my hands on a beefy new iMac, the MBP is going to see very little use . . .

I much prefer the comfort and experience of the big screen.

Wait a few more weeks for the new iPhones. How will the children feel? Let's face it - "students" are more likely go get a $200-$300 phone over a $1,200+ iMac for "school".
