Steve is just messing with us.

I can just see Tiger shipping in June after WWDC.

That i would have to say would...suck. How could apple make us wait soo damn long. It has gone GM, and if people dont agree with this then why havent some developers received this version yet???

The way i figure it there could be one of a couple situations:

1: Tiger is done as we thought, imminent announcement in days.

2: Tiger is done as we thought, but Steve wants to announce it ready to ship (could take a couple weeks).

3: Tiger is done, but something is holding it back that we don't comprehend. (some marketing crap, who knows)

4: Tiger WAS done, but something went wrong the last minute. This could be anything. A huge glaring exploit found last minute. Some hardware problem, with current or yet-un-released hardware. It could be just about anything. For this I can perfectly understand the hold up.

5: Tiger is no where near done yet, or at least several weeks behind what we thought. That would mean AI and TS totally missed the mark on this one. It also means several weeks to a few months more waiting.

My prediction, if it comes to noon Cupertino time tomorrow and we have no news then I think we have to assume #4 or #5 and just wait it out.

I don't think Apple is going to wait until June. It doesn't make sense since we saw a rapid fire release of builds then nothing.

I think here's what's going on:

1. A delay out of respect for the Pope.
2. .Mac is still not ready for Tiger. Apple is doing a lot of upgrades behind the scenes, and they are not ready or are behind.
3. Think Secret just got it wrong. They have been way off on the dates before.

Either way, I can't wait.

Several reliable sources have confirmed that Build 8A428, which was seeded internally last week, was declared the Gold Master, as AppleInsider first noted. The build has yet to reach Apple's developer connection Web site, however, and likely won't in order to curtail any early distribution of the release, sources said. Developers last received build 8A425

Who the heck are these "reliable sources"? If ThinkSecret isnt right this time, I see lots of dissapointed people, and not near as much visits to their site! :)

I guess this time they didn't have hard facts. They said themselves the April 1 announcement was based on speculation. Apple probably never intended to make an announcement on April 1. We now have reason to believe that build 8A428 is in fact GM. Therefore the question is what are they waiting for?
- Hardware that is not yet ready?
- Upgrades to .Mac?
- NAB?
- anything else?

Also, 10.3.9 has still not been released although the last build (7W90), which is said to be the final build, was seeded last Friday. Usually the interval between seeding and releasing the final build isn't so long. Those two things doesn't necessarily have to be related but the the more time goes by without any release, the more I start thinking they could be related somehow.

I'm hoping the new rumors are false, and that we'll see something with week, and still have Tiger in our hands around mid-April! :)

Should I give in?

I've been saving up for months now to buy a 12" Powerbook (Superdrive of Course) and finally have the money. With all these announcements and leaks that bring nothing, should I just give in and stick with Panther for a few. I really want Tiger but I really want my Powerbook. It will be my first personal Mac and I want it. Graduating from high school in a month, and I want it before then.
I've heard that if they upgrade within 6 months of your purchase you can get the next upgrade free, you just pay shipping, is this true?

Wanting my new toys...
Now what should I name them?

I dont think it is as long as 6 months. Maybe a month at most. I think if you buy after Tiger has officially been launched they you get a free upgrade.

A man is caught by cannibals. To escape the Island of Cannibals he has to survive 3 tents. In the first tent is ten bottle of Vodka. In the second tent there is a tiger with a toothache. In the third tent he has to sexually pleasure a lady.

So he goes into the first tent and about 10 minutes later comes out so drunk that he is about to pass out. He goes into the second tent. For about 20 minutes you here the man screaming and getting scratched. He comes out and he says: "Where's the lady with the toothache?"

That's only true if you buy AFTER the official release date is announced. If you buy before, you're out of luck.

More waiting

Alright then, more waiting I suppose...but it'll all be worth it once I have Tiger and the rest of my family is still with Panther :)
Still I do wish they'd hurry it up...my birthdays the 14 and it would be oh so sweet to hear sometime around then.

All iBooks come with Combodrive (reads DVD writes to CD) or a Superdrive (read and writes DVD and CD), and have for years.

While Combo's are available, there's unfortunately still some Apple inventory for sale (new) that comes with a mere CD.

For example, available right now off of the Apple Store's "Special Deals" page:

iBook G4 1GHz/ 256MB/ 30GB/ CD/ E/ 56K/ 12-inch TFT
-----------------------------^^
Original price: $949.00 Your price: $699.00
Estimated Ship: 3-5 business days
Free Shipping

And:

iBook G4 1.2GHz/ 256MB/ 30GB/ CD/ E/ 56K/ 12-inch TFT
-------------------------------^^
Original price: $899.00 Your price: $799.00
Estimated Ship: 1-2 business days
Free Shipping

FWIW, the versions with the Combo include:

iBook G4 1GHz/ 256MB/ 30GB/ Combo/ E/ 56K/ 12-inch TFT
Original price: $1,099.00 Your price: $799.00
Estimated Ship: 1-2 business days

and

iBook G4 1.2GHz/ 256MB/ 30GB/ Combo/ AP Extreme Card/ E/ 56K/ 12-inch

There is no basis in this 6 month rule. Apple does have an up to date program that once the operating system actual release date is announced, your operating system upgrade is free ($20 shipping). Since the operating release date has not been announced, you can not expect your update to Tiger to be free until it has happened. Get a new machine now, and you can use third party utilities to mimick Tiger until you are able to upgrade to Tiger. Just remember these fine rules of upgrading:

http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html

Panther is a good operating system, and the fact that Tiger hasn't been released shouldn't hold you back from making the purchase.

macnews.net.tc is reporting that Apple has seeded Mac OS X Tiger Server: Build 8A420. And points out that a major function still does not work, Portable Home Directories.

I suspect that this is ultimately the reason for Tiger's delay. 10.4 is a very big release and much of the API is being built on and/or revised and especially with this revision, it would probably not be very wise of Apple to not have the Server edition of the release out with or shortly following the release of the Tiger client.

By the way...does the server version of the OS usually ship at the same time or is it delayed a bit?

What do you make of this?

This afternoon I talked to my bookstore computer guy about Tiger. He told me that the Apple representative was there a few minutes ago, and he informed me that they were expecting Tiger until August, which is obvously not true (at least let's hope not). However he did tell me that they would not be taking preorders, but would have Tiger on the shelf the day it was released.

As I was walking out the Apple rep was still there and I asked him the same questions. He told me that it would be the first half of 2005, and that Apple wouldn't let people know what was going on until a day or two before, for secrecy.

Anyway here is my two cents. I think that Apple knows exactly what they are doing and that there will be a announcement and release on the same day. Since the rep was there and based on what they both told me, I think that they are letting dealers know what the plan is and that release should be soon.

p.s. I noticed that on Macminute they have a story that Aspyr will be previewing The Sims 2 at an Apple Store in Austin for their monthly event. However the event is scheduled on April 15, which I found interesting.

Sorry, maybe someone else mentioned this, but I haven't read the entire thread...

I'd be surprised if Apple releases Tiger on the day of (or within days of) the announcement. Jaguar and Panther had such big release events... Apple store event for the unveiling. Wouldn't they want to make Panther's release a big deal too, not so much for the geeks like us who will buy it no matter what, but for those who respond to such hype?

I will dismiss the August comment, just can't imagine that Steve would be untruthful. The only scary part is that he also promised us a 3 GHz Power Mac within a year, which was totally false. I think that the backlash would be tremendous.

It just still looks like no one really knows for sure. Apple's secrecy is quite tight on this.

I think they're doing all this disinformation to both make Think Secret look stupid and to help root out their leak. Good for them on both counts if you ask me.

Apple store is down "back within the hour" - who wants to put money on this not being for the reasons we are all hoping?

The Apple UK store is down and it is 22:37 in the UK. Maybe Tiger, US store is still up though.
