I have a gut feeling/hazy memory that they threw in the discs, but yes I think you are right about the preinstalled versions taking about 6 weeks. I'm sure Apple wouldn't make you pay to upgrade a product to the current version. Bit like the Mac minis and iLife '05.

I've been working nights so off to bed - hopefully Tiger will be on the scene by the time I wake up...

They probably did. One important thing to remember, independent resellers usually don't throw in discs if they weren't already included. I remember reports from MR members who bought a Mac half a year after Panther's launch but didn't get any Panther discs because those Macs had probably been sitting on a shelf for several months.

The mag was suposed to come out on Thursday / Friday, but the website posted a news story that they've held it back till Tuesday (tomorrow) for 'the biggest apple announcement / launch so far this year'

Macuser is basically the 'official' magazine for apple, never really dabbling in the rumour world. so it's not out of the question to give them the world exclusive 'announcment'.... we'll see.

Can I be the first to say:

G5 powerbooks on Tuesday!

:D

macosrumors.com... yet again

I've asked previously on this message board and gotten unsatisfactory answers about why so many people (particularly here, but also elsewhere) dump so badly on macosrumors.com. And here is yet another example because that site was the only rumors site out there specifically stating that the April 1 announcement rumor could not be confirmed and was unlikely.

I'm not affiliated with any rumor's site, but again, I'm left with this weird sense of confusion about why macosrumors has such a bad rap when in fact it looks like they are plugged in to some real sources.

Not trying to start any holy wars, but if a site is a good source why not rely on it? They certainly called this one.

i dont care when its released - as long as it's ready. just like the PBG5.

just get it right before you release it apple...

but the macuser thing looks promising - they wouldnt do that for Adobe CS2 - it's not a mac exclusive thing so theres no point.

I didn't read or know about the bad rap about macosrumors.com from anywhere but came to that conclusion myself just by reading the articles on their site. It's all junk. It wasn't too hard to come to the conclusion the editors on that site pull stuff from their ass and pass it off insider knowledge. If you really want to find out for yourself, just visit the site.

As far as starting a holy war, that'll be impossible, cause nobody cares.

Re: Where is Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)?

Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger is still a couple of months off according to Amazon.

For those who "pre-ordered" 10.4 from Amazon, click on:

[My account] > [Where's My Stuff] > [Not Shipped Yet]

You find the estimated ship date is June 2.

I don't know if that really means anything, but it's not a rumor. It's black & white.

Oh I hope not. I wouldnt say Adobe CS2 is the biggest Mac product launch of the year so far. Not with Tiger looming.

Maybe that was the story they were going to run but have inside info from Apple that Tiger is announced tomorrow and that's why they are holding back.

Looking good! :p

Unless this was an April fools...

Doubt it. Over here, if you're asked if it's an April fool you have to own up and the first forum post did just that. It would be extremely bad manners for the online editor to then deny it.

does anyone else think that less than two weeks is not enough time to build up actual anticipation for tiger's release? i don't know how long they had the countdown for panther, but i would think that apple would want something like a month between the release date announcement and the actual release.

Actually, a "mere" 2 weeks is plenty of time.

Afterall, consider the following:

Boxes & other hardcopy documentation ... could have been printed long ago.
Purchasing of CD's & Jewel cases ... ditto
Printing a fancy "Tiger" logo on the CD ... ditto

Having "sufficient" inventory to ship on the release date ... probably only 25,000 units or thereabouts, and this isn't that difficult.

The only thing they had to wait for was to burn the CD after Golden Master.

And this isn't hard: an industrial automated duplicator from diskmakers can burn 25 DVD's/hour for $6K worth of hardware, which means that a $100K hardware investment provides a burn rate of roughly 400/hour, which works out to just a tad under 10,000 disks produced from 24 hours of continuous runtime (if you really had to go for broke). Doing the math, you could pump out 30K copies if you run for two weeks with no overtime.

Or if Steve said to have 100K disks ready to ship, that's still doable within 2 weeks by running 3 shifts & weekends with a contingency of a 25% capacity reserve.

Tiger on new powerbooks/ibooks?

OS 10.3 Panther was officially released on October 24, 2003.

I bought a brand new iBook G4 800 Mhz directly from the online Apple Store on December 2, 2003 and it came loaded with OS 10.3

I would recommend waiting a month or so before buying a new Mac until a new OS is officially released and the Mac gets the latest OS installed on it.

Apple's holding a special event on Sunday morning, April 17, in Las Vegas (during NAB). I looked for the link... it's a press and industry event by registration only. So, Sunday April 17 we should see FCP 5 and of course Tiger.

Come on Apple! Give us some good news!!! I'm really hoping for the annoucement as many of you guys are as well.... Keep your fingers crossed and hope that those Amazon river dolphins are wrong. lol

^_^ ^_^

It's definitely coming April 17th. All indications point there. Thanks for the link Mr. Toor.

Thats what i was thinking. I just hope it comes out within the month.

Immediate availability

Perhaps Apple will wait to announce immidiate availability and have a big launch event.

Let's be rational...

With the latest build in developer's hands, the delay (I'm sure) is
to collect feedback on issues and problems. Apple (and any software
development organization) is walking the fine line of quality and schedule.

The upcoming meeting likely has to deal with discussing feedback and known bugs in order to decide if the proposed ship date is possible.

I seriously doubt Apple cares to delay the release to discredit rumour sites. Why would they delay something that will increase cash flow the minute it goes on sale?

one company can replicate 920,000 a day.
a link here.
plenty of time, even if they start replication tomorrow.

thats 920,000 cd's a day, but only 500,000 dvd's a day.

The 17th is a Sunday.

In a way that seems bizarre -- Apple almost always does Tuesday announcements.

But on the other hand, Sunday is during the weekend and therefore allows for some pretty juicy release parties at the Apple stores; bear in mind that they want to ideally get people into the stores, being as they might come in wanting Tiger and decide to get some hardware (or additional software) too.

tuesdays for the mass market. for specialised markets, announcements are made to suit the event. nab starts the 16th april runs to 21st april. they have a press conference at the paris hotel from 11am to 12:15pm on the 17th. a press conference day 2 of nab is a logical time. the press conference runs for an hour and 15 minutes so they have more to talk about than just fcp 5. the last 3 or 4 nab's apple had sunday as press conference/release day.

I agree. I can see Apple having everything planned for what the rumors said and then at the last minute postponing it just to shake up the reliability of the rumors. I wouldn't be surprised if they had a Tuesday (tomorrow) announcement and shipping on the 18th that would put the whole thing back a couple of days from what the rumors had tagged.
