The delay, if Apple had planned to announce Tiger last Friday, might simply have been out of respect for the serious condition of the Pope on Friday. Because the Pope died on Saturday Apple might also hold off the announcement another week. Both out of respect and the fact that most non-Rome news will be lost in a lot of the media this week. I'm not Catholic, but my thoughts have been with this exceptional man for the past week. Even something as exciting as Tiger seems to take a distant second place right now.

Even if that is the situation there is nothing stopping the production of the CDs and DVDs and distribution of inventory for a mid April release date. The key - when you can get it in your hands - will not change if an announcement is delayed.

What’s to say that the announcement wasn't scheduled for Friday? Perhaps Apple saw the writing on the wall that they wouldn't get the air time in the world media that they would have hoped for. Half of the Moon could have broken off and crashed into Mars sending the 4th planet spiraling out of the solar system and it still would have gotten second billing with every news outlet in the world.

If Apple did have an "event" scheduled for April 1st, they were wise to have rescheduled it for a more opportune time to optimize media exposure.

Another thing, if Apple really was trying to mislead the rumors sites (which I don't think they are), they would offer up dates that were after the actual event, not before. It's always better to exceed expectations.

pretty reliable.

Yeah, but they just copied TS on this rumor.

And, I wouldn't be surprised if Apple leaked false information to catch TS's leaker.

Sorry for the simplistic question, but is Tiger worth it (regardless of money, I am talking about performance and stability) for an iBook 1.33GHz 1.256GB RAM Radeon 7000?? I am using the latest version of Panther and am satisfied with it. However, I really like the features of Tiger and would gladly upgrade.

LOL. This is hilarious.

"Breaking News coming in to CNN. Apple has just announced that they are going to release Tiger on April 15. Once again, Apple announcing Tiger will be at stores on April 15. For more analysis, let's turn to our Apple expert..."

You're dreaming.

Tiger won't even be mentioned by the "world media". There will be a little paragraph in the back of the business section of papers on the day it is released.

If they did postpone it from Friday, it was because of respect...not because of the media exposure.

You crack me up.

I'm venturing to guess most people get their news from the internet. Or at least people who have a vested interest in Technology and Computers. Sure, it won't make the front page headlines, but it will for the Technology section. Most every tech column will have a write up on Apple's release so it gets major attention.

Good point-I agree the news coverage of the death of Pope John Paul II has overshadowed and of modt imprtance than compared to the Tiger release date announcement.

Might be nothing - but Mac site is down people.

I've decided against the holding of breath however!

Do you mean the Apple site?

Is it just done on your computer or do they actually have the "post-it" up?

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of "Mac" sites.

True, but he said "world media", and that implies major news organizations. (CNN, BBC, NY Times, etc)

And don't forget The Wall Street Journal. It's got a larger circulation than the NYT.

I'm wondering what Mossberg is going to say when it's announced and/or released. All the Financial People out there will read the Journal (and the Financial Times to a lesser extent) and perhaps that will affect Apple's stock price again.

Wish I'd bought some Apple Stock...

With April Fool's come and gone, the question remains... where is Tiger? rumors had placed it's announcement on April 1.

Subsequent confirmation expects Tiger to be in stores by April 15th.

No reliable information on the fate of Tiger has surfaced, but one unconfirmed report claims that Apple Stores have called staff meetings on April 17th, providing speculation that April 18th may be official launch day. More details as available...

It's running on my roommate's G5. And man is it nice, except for one or two bugs.

This seems to be a 'canary trap'.

A canary trap is where you think you have a 'leak', so you give several people in your organization different stories about planned products. When you see a story in the rumor sites, you know who leaked it, so you can fire them.

I would not doubt this at all.
I always act like Apple is doing this to us concerning new seeds.
Whenever we get a new seed, we never post any info about it until after someone else has. That way we don't fall into any possible traps.

Upgrade discount

Without getting too offtopic, I've got to ask: what are the chances that Apple offers a free/discounted upgrade to the people who've bought a computer in the last couple of weeks or so? I don't mind installing it myself, but of course, I'd rather not pay full price for something that'd be included in less than a month after my original purchase.

I'm a relatively new Apple owner, so I'm not sure how this usually goes with them - any experienced people out there who have an educated guess?

Not a chance in hell. Unless you bought in the last two weeks before the launch date.

I don't understand all the people who ask for a free/reduced upgrade on tiger when they've purchased their mac a month before the announcement of Tiger.

First of all, computers sold after the announcement of Tiger (not the release) will get a free upgrade (only shipping costs to pay), all others will have to rely on the will of their dealer.

Second, if you buy a new car a month before the new model comes out, you won't get the new model eiter, nor will you get the new rims that were on this model.

Companies can't just give people their newest upgrades when they've bought them a few months earlier, realism is in place I guess.

Tomorrow is the day I should get my new Tiger seed. It has been 2 weeks since the last one and If it comes it will tell me how close Tiger actually is.
The kernel build date on the seed has always been 1 or 2 days earlier than when the seed arrives. If that holds true to form it will show the GM rumor as false.

Don't expect to get one then. 428 is the final version.

It's been my experience that any software update that involves going from one decimal point to another (ie 10.3 to 10.4) is usually free or reduced for current owners. Is that so hard to understand?

That's not even close to a balanced comparison.

RTFP. I said a couple of weeks ago (or so), not a couple of months. I asked a simple question; I didn't expect to be lumped in with "all the people" that have a different circumstance. Bosrs1 said simply "Not a chance in hell". I can deal with that. Snotty comments about "realism" I can do without.

Why thank you. I always try to be as blunt and to the point as possible.
