Your post would be accurate if this were YEARS ago. ;) iBooks have been coming with Combo and Super Drives for years.

Edit: LOL bosrs1, we posted the same thing at the same time.

If you're a student, you can order a CD-ROM only iBook.

Not anymore. They eliminated that last rev.
Huh? Here's a screenshot of the Educational Apple Store (7:35 PM PDT). And even if they did discontinue CD-ROM only iBooks there are still plenty iBooks that are only a year-old that still have that option. It wouldn't be very smart of Apple to declare them defunct.

You are right. And most of the G3 laptops and desktops that Tiger still supports by the way, had cdroms as their default configuration.

HURRY UP AND RELEASE THE DANG OS! THIS IS DRIVING ME CRAZY. As soon as it is released, I will be ordering my 12" Powerbook. Every day I go to the rumor sites, forums, and the apple page (waiting for that updated home page covered in stripes ;) ) When the whole April fools day rumor was up, I stayed up until 12 waiting for the announcement. NOTHING!

"The event, sources say, is currently scheduled for Friday, April 1 and will be delivered via satellite to numerous locations around the world. Unknown at this point is where the event will take place and whether the media or other outsiders will be invited to attend. Well placed sources say Tiger will likely be in stores by April 15." (Think secret)

THINK SECRET SUCKS! Is anyone as impatient about this as I am???

Here Kitty, Kitty, Kitty....

Yes. I am very impatient. I want Tiger! I had looked forward to April 1, and then there was nothing. I'm at the start of another work week, hoping Tiger will be announced, which will give me some spirit to help get me through it. haha.

I'd love to see them tell us the ship date tomorrow. I'm still hoping for April 15. Please! I'm sure it is soon. Don't you think? I think people will have Tiger in their hands, before NAB, if only by a day or two. They should tell us the ship date and take preorders starting tomorrow, so we can have delivery by the ship date as they did with iLife and iWork. That is my hope. Please. When I wake-up tomorrow, I will head to apple.com, and what will I see?

No.....

That was cool, for about two hours, when they updated them, but it has been driving me mad lately. :)

I hate those iPods!

I'm beginning to hate those iPods more and more each day! Ok just to confirm, the NAB deal is the 4-7? Something like that? I dont get why it wouldnt be announced at that. Also, when I look at the listings for presentations at NAB, it doesnt show Steve Jobs and Apple? What is up with that? :(

Has anyone noticed the benefits of buying Tiger from Apple if your a student or teacher?
Normally hardware and software at Apple get about a 9% discount with the education discount. Panther, however, has a whopping 45% discount and so will Tiger. the choice for me is clear.

I would hope not. Apple is still selling iBooks with CD-ROM drives only.
not true
check Apple store
Apple doesn't sell iBooks with CD-ROM drive only
the cheapest iBook come with combo drive

They still have it. In fact, I double-checked, before I made my post. :) It is $899.
Well that's one reason not to be a cheap ass :)

Frankly I don't see the conflict though. Anyone buying that is buying it for Panther, not Tiger. They will probably eliminate the CD-Rom option when Tiger releases. And as for declaring certain old G3s defunct... I fail to see why that isn't in Apple's best interest. It forces you to buy a new computer (which you'll need to run Tiger with any kind of decent performance anyway)

We already went over this. They do at the educational store.

Tiger, so what?

It's really hilarious how so many geeks are getting off (prematurely) on Tiger.
Here's a different perspective on Tiger: I feel quite comfortable waiting for Tiger as I'm not going to install it before I get a new Mac (which is still some time away). What does Tiger really offer? Dashboard? Well, it's eye candy for sure but doesn't really offer anything for me. I can hide my apps anyway and like to focus on one thing (calendar, notes etc.) and don't need a whole bunch floating around. And if I only open one widget at a time, how is that substantially different from what I do anyway? Lastly, there are always virtual desktops, for all your 'Dashboard' needs. Spotlight? Well, don't need that either. I have no problem finding stuff at all. And again, it doesn't understand all file types on the Mac. Pretty half-cooked solution that is. Search prefs... ok maybe useful for beginners. When I installed the first preview it stalled my Mac when creating an index. Nah, this one's a resource killer which doesn't suite my olden Mac. HD Video? Can't use that anyway. New Mail? Well, looks ok but you can already set up 'smart boxes' via rules... so what?

I could go on with the other feature but you get the idea. I'm not saying that Tiger isn't good for some ppl. Those that can use HD, that have newer machines for which Tiger should be more optimized. And if people really like 'Dashnoard' that's ok. But it will probably be no improvement when you're on an older Mac. All in all, it is, I think, *slightly* over-hyped.

Was talking to the computer sales manager @ my bby store, and he said they are going to carry a limited selection of software to sell with the mini now. The ones he could remember: Office 2004, Tiger, and some other "apple only software."

They'll probably carry more if they do well...

Well besides all the under the hood improvements, Tiger offers: Dashboard, new Mail Client (far superior to the old one), Safari 2.0 w/RSS, full .Mac support, new iSync which supports full computer backup now, new iChat AV with 10 way audio and 4 way video, plus much more. It's more then just eye candy.

A little bird told me today the hold-up is with .Mac. The bird also chirped that 4/1 was never a real announcement date.

Apparently all is not well on the server side of the Tiger release.

(Take it for what it's worth.)

Do they have to release client and server versions simultaneously? If your little is correct, could it be build 8A428 wasn't really GM, or is ist something they have to change on the .Mac servers?

It's your decision if you want to upgrade to Tiger or not. I don't think Tiger's just eye candy but again it's up to do if you need Tiger or not.
