Little suspicious. Think they're doing this so they don't have to give a free bumper with the white phones? Hold it till after August..... Interesting. APPLE!

This is an absolutely ridiculous and petty theory.

I think that Apple was unable to solve the antenna and proximity sensor problems in the white phone and made the only decision that makes sense: hold it off and avoid a new wave of complaints and media attacks that would hit with the release of the white phone. This the only sane and responsible thing to do, IMO.
Yes, I suppose now all those who wanted a white iPhone will cry and complain and childishly yell "I want it and I want now, and I want it fixed!!! And I don't care if it's impossible!". But it won't last.
On the other hand, there's a chance that Apple will do better testing on the phone and when it's finally released it will be free of the black one's issues. At least, I hope so. I wanted the white one too.:)

Well, I'm still going to wait. This really sucks with a 3G on iOS 4 though...

im running ios4 on a 3g and it isnt THAT bad, yes it is slower than past os releases, but if you jailbreak (its not evil, dont listen to apple or whatever anybody else tells you) and remove useless language packs, useless launchdaemons, you will notice a nice speed increase. This isnt to say itll even compare to a 3gs but itll make ios4 on a 3g decent.

I think what sucks the most about this is the complete lack of choice.

If you want anything other than a black phone with a black case, too bad.

I didn't read all the replies, so maybe I missed it. But, why is the white iPhone so much more difficult to make? I don't get it.

The funny thing is, is that the delay issues go way beyond "paint". Yes, the paint is a factor, but the shade of the white is not what is causing all the issues.

Apple has looked worse. This is nothing compared to when they announced the 500Mhz G4 PowerMac and then had to pull back to 450Mhz because Motorola couldn't supply the chips. Worse still, Apple sold the 450Mhz at the same price as what the 500Mhz was suppose to sell for.

G4 Cube case cracking, G4 iBook Logic Board failures, PowerBook Titanium hinges that broke off, 667 PowerMacs that over heated, G5 iMac capacitors oozing toxic crap inside the casing, Macbook splitting casing, MacPro's that haven't been upgraded in a year and a half.

This has ALWAYS been a part of Apple. No biggie. Just relax and enjoy the ride.

s.

true, those problems though were before the internet news craze so these problems werent as highly documented, hell iphone issues are hot topics on CNN shows now. But yes apple has definitely looked worse, but how communication has evolved, it makes it seem worse

To be honest, this DOESN'T suprise me....why? I think they are truely trying to "FIX" the attena problem. Thats just my op, but I think it has to have something to do with it. maybe changing some stuff for T-MO?

Best explanation yet:

The paint is underneath the glass.

White paint on glass is very, very tricky. The actual hue, yellowing, and covering power are major issues. There are basically three pigments from which to choose: flake white, zinc oxide, and titanium oxide. Each one has different pros and cons.

Flake white is a fabulous white, has great covering power, and won't yellow if it receives light on a regular basis (don't keep in the dark). The con? It's lead. It won't be used in a consumer product.

Both zinc oxide and titanium oxide have less toxicity (which is why they're used in sunscreen lotions), but also considerably less covering power. The issue right now is they are probably having difficulty getting a thin enough coat, yet still have enough opacity.

This is not good. I was hoping to be able to get mine soon. By the time they'll get it out, some of us will start thinking about iPhone 5....

So when do people think "later this year" means? I don't think it's going to be any time soon.

ssshhhh dont say tmo....verizon users will go into a frenzy screaming "NO IPHONE IS COMING TO VERIZON IN THREE WEEKS FTW!!!!!!!"

LOL....prolly not the tmo thing...but, I think there will prolly atleast a minor fix for the antenna..imo

I think the white iPhone 4 looks amazing and not just a little "extra" like the white 3GS. The white version will probably be available by the time I have enough money to buy it!

Haha wow. Glad I decided to go with black on pre-order day despite me having my mind set on white.

I would still be waiting for the thing until December!!!

October-December.

Seriously.... that's later in the year.

If it was anything earlier (this is what they're thinking now, not what may happen, it could always be earlier)... then they'd say "late summer/early fall" or some such.

Later in the year generally means 4th quarter.

There again, they are probably giving it a worst case scenario so as not to further enrage the masses.

That way, if it comes earlier, people will think they're (Apple) awesome. ;)

chillax, just think how much more you'll enjoy it without worrying about discoloration and possibly, an updated antenna fix.

It's really difficult to wait 5 months for a Phone, when your original is busted.

Not really, I got mine with no problem.

Of course if apple pushed them out with crappy coloring, you people would bitch about that. They are damned if the do, damned if they don't.

Well I guess you are a very lucky person. Because I, and many other people, have had many problems with ordering our phones... Even if you didn't have any problems, it would be a farce for you to say that the iphone 4 release wasn't plagued with issues -_- . There have been problems ordering the phone, there have been problems tracking the phone (many showed up as backordered). The white iphone got delayed further still, the antenna issue, and the proximity sensor issue... You can't deny fool!!!

Dang! I was so excited for the end of July to get my white one! I just bit the bullet and ordered a black one. (which I could have had waaay back in June!)
I'll just wait until my wife is available for an upgrade in March, then get the white one and switch with her for my black one.

Either that or wait for the white iPhone 5 in June and do it.

don't forget

Yep:

27" iMac flickering display - nothing wrong...then silently release several firmware updates.
27" iMac Yellow tint - nothing wrong...then starts issuing 15% refunds
iP4 Antenna - nothing wrong...just don't hold it that way
iP4 Reception - nothing wrong...but now we made the bars bigger for you to see
iP4 Proximity Sensor - still working on that
white iP4 - will be out by July....never mind...later this year
Safest browser on the planet...never mind...auto fill will share all your secrets with anyone.

Not to mention the many MacPro users that have been waiting for an update for nearly two years.

I was going to buy an iMac this past spring but held off due to all the quality issues they experienced. I am hoping that the refresh due soon is of higher quality than the iPhone4 mess.

That said...I bought my dad an iPad and my wife a MacBook Pro and they are both flawless devices that are beautifully manufactured and a joy to use.

don't forget all the macbook pros', previous generation which had the failing Nvidia chipset, still being replaced NQA today. Also, the Time Capsule which were silently being replaced, till a full replacement policy came in to effect just last month (after nearly TWO YEARS) and they are all pretty much just being replaced if they fail today.

certainly nobody is perfect

Well, I think I'll just have to bite the bullet and buy a black one, and maybe if I can swing it sell it later and buy a no-commitment white iPhone.

Still, I'm annoyed that because I waited I missed out on a month of iPhone 4 goodness, and now I'm stuck with a black phone and black case.

Honestly...

Hey Guys long time reader, first time poster....

The way I see this is that had apple when ahead and started manufacturing white iphones with the glass having weird shades of white people would have started posting pictures of "blotches" of discoloration or something of the sort creating another firestorm and more bad PR for apple. Things happen, manufacturing goods is not always perfect, just be glad that at least there is an iphone to buy. It's better than no iphone at all and if you still want a white one just wait its better than having a phone with a glass-color issue or get a black one if you simply can't wait. Hardware wise it's the same just with a different color and capacity. Well that's my two cents. :)

Looking forward to the white iPhones being issued just in time for the X-mas rush.

And since they have been so vague with the release date, Apple will probably allow a fair amount of time to stockpile some white iPhones so everybody will get theirs.
