Why do people believe this ? Everyone can get their own white iPhone 4 parts and build theirs......This smells like BS to me

It's my opinion so I'll say what I want. From what I have seen, most would not have cared as much as Apple does to delay such an important and high margin product. I actually could not care less about Apple giving a response as to why it's late. That is their business. If you don't like, buy a different product.

Apple is not loosing any profit here. Their production is already at 100% of capacity. They are just loosing a little bit of credibility because they announced a product without actually delivering it. Black iPhone is fine.

I have no info on production amounts. It's debatable whether other manufacturers would reach capacity limits. There are people who would choose a phone based strictly on colour so presumably they are loosing that sale. Not sure about credibility as they didn't give a timeline for delivery AFAIK. How much brand damage would be done if they released a mismatched iPhone?

How is it Vaporware when there are reports of white iPhones? Also, what good business practice is there that Apple has broken? I for one, don't see it.

It's vaporware when a widely anticipated announced product doesn't show for a period prolonged enough that eager customers start believing it will never happen.

I'm with you on the "good business practice" issue though. Apple's policy is to say very little about upcoming/unavailable products. Saying "we're sorry" just isn't their way, and that doesn't make them bad - it makes them consistent. Dates slip? we get notified by longer lead times in the store, or simple removal of item from the store, or indefinite absence from arriving in the store. Methinks most demanding an apology are making the issue personal as though Steve were their friend - he's not, he doesn't know you exist, better that he puts his energies into getting it right and produced than apologizing to you. As for the remaining few waiting for it, the line is what other companies use too: "we'll ship it when it's done, and it's not done yet."

Honest question, did apple allow people to order white iphones already?

I think there is a queue of people wanting to purchase a Verizon iPhone and that didn't seem to bother Apple for 3 years. So I'm sure the blip of customers wanting a white iPhone isn't roiling Apple, Inc.

Okay, better mockup with stainless steel home button.

Same concave shape and the metal is bright enough to look good against white. If this issue really is the problem for the delay, this is the simplest solution that doesn't compromise the design. Honestly, I think it's a red herring, otherwise someone at Apple would have thought of this already.

But Steve says the button MUST be white!

I don't disagree with what you are saying or your theory I am just saying we here so many people bash other companies for doing EXACTLY what Apple is doing today; yet those same people defend Apple here.

Your argument is invalid because Apple is not losing an additional sale of a white iPhone; eventually, they could have sold a white iPhone instead of a black one. But I do agree, there is possibly a little brand damage if they release a mismatched iPhone, as well if the white iPhone remains vaporware.

Once capacity exceeds expectations, they would lose sales. For all we know, there may be a second white production line sitting idle waiting for the white model.

I wanted a white one but got a black one instead back in June on day one. After two days I returned it because my 3G felt better to hold and had less obnoxious "features" on it. A week or so later I bought a new, white 3Gs 32GB with iOS 3. Fantastic phone. Return next June's iPhone to the original style case and I'm in, goofy iOS 4 O/S not withstanding.

Hmm... mine seems to look just fine... and I get nothing but compliments on it. :D
Not the best pic, sorry, I don't have a DSLR to take a closeup shot of the button for you guys. :p

Here's a decent shot of the back too... with the black bumper on.

*I did the iResQ conversion. ;) ...and before people tell me I spent too much money doing that, they (at the time anyway) were offering $180 credit if you give them your black parts, which I did. So it only cost me $69. Looks like now they only offer $100 credit.

Looks nice, but WAY too much money.

No point in getting a white iPhone 4 now. Might as well wait for the 5. Sorry Apple, you missed out on my cash for now.
Me too, I'm thinking. If I can't get white until near the end of the year, it'll just be 6 months until the next version. And I won't want to switch just 6 months into a new contract. So for now, my white 3GS will have to do.

Seems to contradict July Tim Cook's affirmation that they are selling as many iPhone 4 as they can make.
