I have never thought of the ipad as a device that gets replaced every year. My ipad air replaced my original ipad. I expect the same life out of the ipad air.

Only thing that might make me replace it sooner is an anti-glare screen.

I think there are very few people who actually upgrade their iPad every year.

Yeah Apple should slow down their refresh cycle.

There's always going to be those who upgrade to a new iPad every year. It's just I think for Apple, they're going to have to realize the iPad business will never be what it was before.

But then again, with the upcoming launch of the iWatch, they understand that and are now shifting their focus to the watch for the next few years?

On the Fence

I have the iPad Mini 1st gen. Unless something spectacular is shown on the 16th, I'll be skipping this year.

I have the 1st iPad Mini as well. I'd like to go back to a larger screen (had the iPad 2 before buying my Mini). The retina display, alone, is not much of an incentive for me. Although I doubt that the, rumored, 12 inch iPad will appear this year or maybe not at all. That would definitely cause me to upgrade. Now, if an new iPad Air 2 appears, I'll take a look but still may be on the fence. Guess I'll just have to wait and see.

I believe they should too. The Air is excellent as is and this upcoming refresh has trivial improvements at best. A little lighter? Supposedly a little faster? Touch ID? Whatever.

Phone people are more like crackheads than iPad users are. Phone people would upgrade every six months if it was an option. But iPads can be left alone for a couple years without much worry. Maybe Apple will change their way of upgrading if the response is lackluster?

Sniffs bait, swims back to current iPad Air..... ;)

I'm upgrading from an air. Only reason is because I bought an retina mini a couple of months ago. Then a week later I got a great deal from my internet provider for an ipad air that my girlfriend was supposed to have. She didn't like the size so she took the mini. Fast forward to now and I feel the same way. Selling the air and getting the new mini with touch id as a bonus. :)

I am perfectly happy with my rMini except for one thing - it is only 16GB. I am constantly running low on space. So plan to upgrade to a new rMini with 64GB. Other than hat I would be perfectly happy with what I have now.

Touch ID and potential for more battery life due to the A8 is enough for me to jump from my iPad Air to whatever is next. Anything else is butter. I do a fair amount of IT work from my iPad, so its a business expense that I've gladly paid every revision. Don't imagine this revision will stop the churn.

But who will that help? Those who are happy with their devices will continue to use them. Those who can afford to/ lack impulse control will upgrade every year paying Apple $$$.. Why would Apple want to turn that down?

If anything slowing the push will allow some of the existing competitors or someone completely new to blindside Apple.

If the leaked photo's are to be believed, then the new ipad will be very much the same boring dated stupid design of the 1st generation, then I am skipping.

I have the non retina ipad mini, and I love most features on it, the only feature I hate with a passion is the terrible 1 sided landscape audio..It sucks, I would gladly have paid an extra $10 for audio to be truly stereo when in landscape.. In fact I would not have moaned at $50 extra to have the stereo audio in landscape and micro sd card slot for video files...

I know that Mr Trump will have great hair before Apple does either of the above!!

This is a Apple forum filled with enthusiasts and most of us aren't upgrading! Imagine how low the upgrade numbers will be to the general public that isn't all jolly and enthusiastic about Apple products!

The thread calls out to people who are not upgrading. It should not come as a surprise that the majority of the people in said thread are in fact not upgrading.

I'm pretty sure Apple will have some incredible announcements that will make all of us want to upgrade immediately. They do this every year. There hasn't been an iPad announcement that has disappointed so far. Touch ID alone is worthy of an upgrade for everyone.

I don't see what's so special about Apples incremental yearly updates. I personally have no use for Touch ID.

Same boring dated design? WTF? The design is the same as your much loved iPad Mini. Not sure what you're bitching about man.

The new visionary features that are released? Not sure what people except to happen in just 12 months, better for incremental releases than waiting 3 years for a huge epic refresh.

Are people forgetting we're in the midst of the computer revolution? You snooze you lose brocs.

Apple is slowly painting themselves into a corner with yearly releases. They need to slow down the churn cycle to maybe a year and half to two years, otherwise it's gotten to the point where you'll see a lot of people just waiting.

Well, that's nonsense. Every time Apple releases a new model, it's the best they can make at that point in time. One year from now, Apple can build something better than they sell today. If they don't sell that better iPad, then their products are not as good as they could be.

You seem to be thinking that by having more models they will sell fewer of each model. Of course they will. But I'd rather sell 10 millions of two models each than 18 million or 16 million of one model only.

I find it bizarre how some people seem to think we should upgrade each time something new is released. The only people who do that are either software developers who need the latest model, or people who are so insecure that they cannot live with the knowledge that they don't have the latest model.

Most people are sensible and they don't look at the cost of their devices, but at the cost per year. And quite obviously buying a new iPad every two years means it's half the price than buying a new iPad every year. And twice the price of buying a new iPad every four years.

But then again, with the upcoming launch of the iWatch, they understand that and are now shifting their focus to the watch for the next few years?

Apple watch sales will be nice compared to the sales of other smart watches or watches, but they will be nothing compared to iPhone and iPad sales. Apple watch will be some nice extra money, and a good advertisement for Apple, but it won't be the big money maker.

The only thing you lose is money you could have spent on something more meaningful. I have enough iPad's for now. So i'll wait it out for a feature I actually can use. Till then, Apple can just sell it to someone else.

Yeah Apple should slow down their refresh cycle.

Which would mean that those who think it's time to update won't have anything new to update to. Lost sales. Apple counts how many iPads are sold. Not what percentage upgrades to the next model. They are happy with people updating from the pre-previous model or the third model before.

I have an rMini iPad and I have no intention of upgrading. It still works flawlessly, still does what I need it to do, why should I waste money on a new product? I'm keeping mine for as long as it's willing to work. I love my iPad.

From one perspective, it helps existing iPad owners. If Apple continues to improve the iPads on an annual basis AND push iOS further each year that REQUIRES the additional horsepower and features of newer iPad models there will be the continued "diminished experience" for those who don't upgrade annually.

IMO, Apple needs to allow downgrades to lower versions of iOS for those who want that.

If they do that, then Apple can upgrade the hardware and software all they want and still protect their customers. They already allow users to install lower versions of software to match the version of iOS they have.

This is one of those things that Apple enthusiasts dismiss but grows silently in the background until it becomes a big deal... then it's too late.

The current pace of their upgrades hasn't prevented the erosion of Apple's share of the tablet space. If Apple "obsoletes" their tablets made of premium material so quickly, then the perception of iPads being little more than "boutique items" will gain traction and further erode their marketshare as people buy devices that will have a similar useful lifespan but cheaper materials.

People will wake up and wonder why they should pay for a device that is capable of physically lasting 5-10 years but only have a functional lifespan of 2-3?

ummm, no. You are certain free to have your opinion. Implying that it is universally held, is silly.

Great! Which colour are you thinking of buying? I was thinking gold to match the copious amount of bling I like to wear.

Guys at work were trying to talk me into buying two iPads. One which is your main iPad and another as your beat around. Talk about overly protective of your most worldly possession. Lolz.

Did I mention my bling already? Gold all the way baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!

...Plus, the particular one I have has a perfect display.

We have a winner!

I'm too scared and scarred from last year to go for a new one. It took me 3 units on my iPad Air and 2 on my MacBook Pro to get decent screens. I'm talking dirty blotches of yellow. It was such a time consuming, exhausting and stressful process with the air. It was hours on the phone telling the same thing to various people and all of them used the same codified and controlled language. I may as well have been talking to a robot.

I learnt that all Apple support is not the same.

Mac computers: Great support.
idevice support: No point trying to engage them. Just ask for a new one and get the call over with asap.

Retina iPad Mini is perfect right now. It's extremely fast, beautiful display, and does everything I need it to.

I don't think Touch ID and performance improvements are worthwhile for upgrading. Maybe I'll consider it next year.
