yah it will be smokin....but im curious as to why my order is taking such a long time. I feel like maybe something might happen tomorrow if it is taking so long.

I think you could be on to something here.

There's never a better time to up-sell and cross-sell someone than at point-of-purchase. Given, the sales for new Mac Pros will likely peak at launch for the first few weeks, if I was the product manager for the Mac Pro, I'd want to ensure there were plenty of high-margin upsell items in the BTO list to maximize profits during those lucrative few weeks.

I could see them waiting for the new Nvidia cards AND the new 27" monitors before launching the new Mac Pro just for this very reason.

Only time will tell for sure!

EDIT: The timing of the iPad launch is also an interesting factor. Of course, if you are Apple, you want the iPad to get as much attention around launch as possible and you NEED it to fly out of the gate with a bang and big sales. You really don't want folks with limited discretionary funds for a computer going "Should I buy an iPad or should I buy a MacBook or a Mac Pro". You want all of those folks to buy an iPad now... it's super important with a new market defining niche like this to come out of the gate with serious momentum, even if that means cannibalizing a small percentage of traditional product line sales for the period surrounding it. The enormous spill over effect will make up for it in gross quantities in very short order, and then when you've satisifed market appetite for iPad's you lure them into new MacBooks and Mac Pro's as well. :)

You said it nicely yourself though: best chance to upsell BTO options is at point of purchase, and what other great complimentary BTO option to add to a user's Macbook Pro or Mac Pro than a companion piece iPad? :p

Seriously though, they could discount the iPad through BTO with the purchase of a new Mac and push those sales even more in my opinion, which would make it even more appealing. Kind of like how iWork is discounted if you purchase with a Mac.

I know Apple currently does not offer iPod or iPhone BTO on top of Macs, but what do you think? It's a nice compromise in my opinion, but I acknowledge it may not be the best business approach of maximizing sales. What it would most definitely do however, is cement customer loyalty again, which I think at this point, is something Apple should overlook. This is obviously a critical time for relations between Apple and it's professional customer base. They're are so many decisions they could put into effect right NOW to make things right. Sadly, they are obviously blinded by money, but here's hoping.

Edit: I just forgot about Apple's back to school promotion, which does give you a free ipod with a Mac. Maybe they can discount the iPad during this promotion. That would place it squarely at the end of May; perhaps a potential opportunity for the release of the new Pro line?

Got caught on the last of the PPC G5s (If only we had known).

Budget available to upgrade since Jan this year, have been told to wait for next product release. Lets hope the cheque book stays open.

Its going to be a requirement for the next version of Adobe's Creative Suite (no more support for PPC) - let's hope they get the Macs out before Adobe gets CS5 out - otherwise we'll be stuffed if it comes to collaborating on projects.

As for regular updates on the MacPro. I fear Apple is too tied up in all things 'i' related to worry about the guys in design studios who first put them on the map.

The 2009 Mac Pro will not be able to use Gulftowns because the Microcode support is not present in the EFI.

Supposedly.
It won't be there, as the chip didn't exist when the '09 boards were created.

In the case of the '06 - '07 systems, the new parts used the same process and voltages. So the existing firmware worked with the newer parts. That's why users have been able to upgrade them on their own.

That's not the case this time though, as there's been a die shrink and the voltages are lower. Looking around at other boards (a link VirtualRain posted), some boards work with just a microcode update, while others also need a hardware modification to their Voltage Regs to allow the Gulftown parts to work.

Macbook Pro tommorrow?

Maybe the macbook pro will be released at the same time as the new software update that is supposed to occur, plus another blog stated that it would come out on this tuesday, as well the macbook's usually get updated on tuesday's

waiting for 10.6.3?

One reason the new Mac Pros may have been delayed is they may need OS X 10.6.3. So Apple may be holding the boxes until it formally releases the software (should happen soon, based on frequency of beta releases).

Or not. Everyone else is speculating as to time-frames and reasons. I thought I'd throw that one out there.

If 10.6.3 were the reason, wouldn't it still take quite a bit of time for Apple to have to preload all the new machines with the new software first? I know nothing about the manufacturing process, but if newly Macs are preloaded at the time of construction, then we may have to wait a bit longer for new machines to arrive probably.

Found a 2008 octad at the right price, which left me with enough for these babies :D

Now All I need is the Mac Pro to drive them, hopefully that many lumens doesn't sear the skin

Sorry for the crappy pic, DSLR is gone and the only camera in a 500 ft radius is the MacBook Pro iSight.

The power...The Power!!! Mwuahahaha! :p

congrats on the purchase!

now tomorrow is tuesday. could it finally be the day?

Well, 2 weeks ago, I missed out on a base Quad MP that was also at 41% off so it is certainly coming but 41% off is nothing to pass by and I was looking at a MP for a couple of months. This will make my Lightroom zoom faster than my current AMD64x2 job. Now to crank up the jobs to make some $$$$.

For me the diff between a 4 to 6 core on each CPU won't matter since I'm doing more LR/PS/Aperture than any video but I'd like to try a hand in it sometime very soon.

god... i need a workstaion as soon as possible. if dell really starts shipping on march 30th, i'm sry apple... your OS isn't the top of everyting. i'm not gonna pay this much just for getting screwed by apples business politics. -.-

This has happened before on the verge of a new build and still the MP's came with a special build just prior to the OS release.

Not me, my 06 model is still very fast. (16GB ram, Apple 4870 board) 2.66 4 core.

Buy a 2010 would be a poor use of capital that I can use in other ways and get a better return.

Looks like my wait is over.. finally the Apple store in Oz has put down some decent priced Pros and it looks like they had more than 1 coz I bought 1 and it's still available online.

For a moment I was looking at building a Hackintosh.

Can't wait to get it now

Wow, A$ 2,798.00 for that machine, in Canada it goes for $3200 (http://store.apple.com/ca/product/FB535LL/A?mco=MTMxNDMxMjU). And our regular price is $3800 vs your $4800... I wish our refurbs went that cheap!

Well maybe Apple will use the 30th as well. HOP build dates also use the 30th for the new 6 core cpu's. The Nvidia cards will be released by then as well if they at all factor in to it.
