I ended up getting two of the X25-V 40GB ones ($100 each), as my boot drive (OS & apps only) usually hangs around ~65 GB. I just couldn't justify paying twice the price for storage space I already have in other 1-2 TB mechanical drives.

I'm just hoping that I will get the speed I want out of them in RAID 0, I have heard their speeds are slower than the X25-M's.

They are, but still generate ~180MB/s for sustained reads (single disk; can't recall the random access throughput, but there are reviews out there). Double that for a stripe set, so you should be quite happy. :)

Mmmm. Sweet performance to cost ratio nontheless. :)

It would be nice, however being 17 I don't have to worry about those things for a few more years (at least)

HA. true ;) im 20 and have nearly been going out with my GF for 3 years lol. so you never know whats around the corner.

what workflow do you have that needs 3x30"s? and what job do you have that pays for it!

TBH I have absolutely no need for them, it's more of an obsession

I don't have a real job, it would take too much time from my academics. I buy equipment low and sell it high on craigslist, which is why I have so many machines/cameras/monitors passing through here. I make more money than I would degrading myself with a minimum wage job, and it's tax-free :D

You and me both! I mean I sell a lot of my old gear and electronics back all the time. I think that in itself counts as an obsession as well. Can never be satisfied :sigh:

How many of you will buy a second hand 8 core from ebay? (2 quad)

What do you think the price will come down to? I am a student so no much money in hand and I am hoping to get 2 x quad-core mac pro system when the new one comes out :)

you two must tell me your secrets ;)

i was looking into selling computers, sort of low end PCs on ebay etc. never got around to it.

It's easily done, all you have to do is have some patience and good communication skills. If you wait for a computer at the right price on eBay/craigslist, it's usually able to be sold for some amount of profit.

I usually buy Macs and DSLRs only, as they seem to be things that keep value moreso than most items in the electronics industry. The real key is waiting around until you find a really great deal, and then selling it quickly for much more.

I found a 2008 octad for $1,800 a while back, and sold it for $2,600 two days later. Same thing happened with the 2006 quad, except it was bought for $1,100 and sold for $1,800. It's all a matter of lowballing until you get a guy who wants to get rid of something for quick cash, then you make your move.

There are bound to be some mishaps, so make sure that you are only buying what you would personally want to use/keep for yourself or are willing to potentially take a loss on. I wasn't able to find a buyer for either of these 30" panels, but I bought them at $500 each, so I'm not complaining

daym thats some hot cash you are making there! i would be like making PC computers, with decent low end specs (probs i3 CPU and whatnot) for about $400US, then sell it maybe for $450US (im in australia, rough conversions on money there). that would be some nice extra cash coming in, maybe even sell 3 a week!

things that i would keep.. hmmm... hard drives and RAM! not much money to be made off those though.

do you do auctions? or just the "buy it now" ones? im generally only the latter type

Timeline theory

So here's my theory for announcement date for MP 2010. March 26th or shortly after, as this is the date Nvidia launch the Fermi-based GPU cards and the 2010 Mac Pro will come with GTX 470/480 in Mac form as standard or as key BO option.

So we will be put out of our misery either this Friday or the Tuesday following.

I have no evidence for this whatsoever, but it would point to a Mac Pro with boosted PSU and PCI power to allow multiple Fermi-class GPUs. It is also what I want!

The "waiting for Fermi" notion would also "explain" why in contrast to previous years the MP has not arrived with or before the new Intel chips.

The reality is probably the iSad distraction I guess. :D

I never do auctions unless I am desperate for a specific type of machine. Every once and a while a great priced BIN will pop up, but will be sold quickly. You just have to keep your eyes peeled for those and the "or best offer" listings.

By now I generally try to adhere to things that I know will garner the highest profit margins, i.e. Mac Pros and high-end DSLRs. Most of the other things I started out with (iPhones, iPods, MacBooks, etc) seem frivolous and overcomplicated compared to what I'm on now, which can bring ~$1,000 per item every few days. I would suggest starting out small so you can gain a total understanding of the way to do it, and slowly upping the value of the items as you go along.

def. your reasonings all make perfect sense! i would certainly love to get into selling MPs or even some mac laptops, but i checked within 200km (~160miles?) of my location, and there is only ONE mac (2.26ghz mbp) on sale.

very tempting to do actually.

That's the whole problem with this whole "thing", it doesn't really apply to people outside of the US due to to underuse of international Craigslists and far less listings on eBay. It can still be done, just not anywhere near the frequency achieved in a populated US city.

yea so true. my town is what.. 3,000 people? i live a 10min drive from a town of 10,000 people. 40mins north is a few hundred thousand people. but even still there arent many computers being listed. i guess people arent informed yet.

i just specc'd up a crappy i3 530 for $667 Aus. there is ONE company selling these computers locally off ebay, $625Aus (not including shipping). i reckon i could get a piece of their action.. idk though. i thought about this late last year but gave up. too much effort.

Wow. That definitely is a nice chunk of change. That's something I haven't done with such a premium product. I basically only sell the old to make room for the new.

For me it depends on what I'm selling. On ebay, if after much research of how much something will sell, and if it's in a pretty constant price range, I'll set a Buy It Now. And Generally, I like to start out optimistic and set my price on the higher end. The feedback and seller status definitely help to get any potential buyers. If I don't sell, I gradually bring the price down when i relist the item.

But pertaining to computers and such, I can say I'm not that experienced as Techie here is with the market, so when I had put my 2008 MBP on there, i basically just did a standard auction with a reserve price.

Just bought another 2008 octad, although this one has AppleCare until next May.

I couldn't wait around for Cupertino forever, I needed a machine to tide me over. Kind of upsetting it only having 2 GB of RAM, but I guess I can buy 4 and suffer through until June :p

i'm gonna get something

i'm gonna get something soon. i do 3D work in Maya 2010 and lots of After Effects and Photoshop work. i was using an 8-Core 2.26GHz fully loaded, but it wasn't cutting it for Maya. i'm looking for 12 cores and better video card options more suited to 3D work in general.

i'm halfway toward just buying or building a PC workstation due to the lack of options a build to order Mac Pro presents. my major issue is the lack of graphics card options. i'm just so disappointed that there aren't more workstation options, and of what is out there, the one that should work (Quadro FX 4800), needs better drivers to make it worth the cost.

I think you could be on to something here.

There's never a better time to up-sell and cross-sell someone than at point-of-purchase. Given, the sales for new Mac Pros will likely peak at launch for the first few weeks, if I was the product manager for the Mac Pro, I'd want to ensure there were plenty of high-margin upsell items in the BTO list to maximize profits during those lucrative few weeks.

I could see them waiting for the new Nvidia cards AND the new 27" monitors before launching the new Mac Pro just for this very reason.

Only time will tell for sure!

EDIT: The timing of the iPad launch is also an interesting factor. Of course, if you are Apple, you want the iPad to get as much attention around launch as possible and you NEED it to fly out of the gate with a bang and big sales. You really don't want folks with limited discretionary funds for a computer going "Should I buy an iPad or should I buy a MacBook or a Mac Pro". You want all of those folks to buy an iPad now... it's super important with a new market defining niche like this to come out of the gate with serious momentum, even if that means cannibalizing a small percentage of traditional product line sales for the period surrounding it. The enormous spill over effect will make up for it in gross quantities in very short order, and then when you've satisifed market appetite for iPad's you lure them into new MacBooks and Mac Pro's as well. :)

I couldn't wait anymore and bought a mac pro. my 4core 3.33 ghz machine was ordered March 15th.... still has 1-3 business days as the status in my order.....

That's a smokin machine. It's unlikely the new Gulftown Mac Pro's will outperform that in anything except a couple of 3D/rendering apps.

I might wait to see what the prices will be and what type of GPU options. If the prices are outrageous (like I think they will be), then looking at this system...
http://www.supermicro.com/products/system/4U/7046/SYS-7046GT-TRF.cfm .
Running around 1400 bucks. All you need to add is the processors (around 1 grand a pop) and memory (thinking around a grand for a good amount. This system will take the gulftown xeons. Not bad for under 5 grand. Will have to see what apple comes up with.
