The really nice thing is that it doesn't collect crummy dirt marks on the sides of the touchpad. And my sister who has the same gen white MacBook has had to return hers twice to AppleCare for case cracking. We are both equally careful with our Macs... and plus, the black just looks cooler.

I'm getting the BlackBook because:

1) Its not glossy. I mean c'mon, white glossy things died when the iMac went aluminium. Oh and what else did the iMac go? Oh yeah; black.

2) If you have a MightyMouse, you'll know that if you use it for an extended period, you get smudges of dirt everywhere that would be virtually invisible on the BlackBook.

3) Personally I think the BlackBook looks best. Not just better than the white MacBook, but better than the MacBook Pro too. The MBP has looked the same for too long now, the old style keyboard bugs me even if it is backlit, and the grille over the speakers looks like its gonna fill up with grime before you can say "don't leave it near that grime".

4) The BlackBook will go nicely with my black amplified speakers, black television, black iPod, black graphics tablet, black bedsheets, black sofa (okay its really really really dark green), and most importantly my huge collection of black t-shirts.

5) I listen to heavy metal. Black makes sense. You don't see Dark Tranquillity playing glossy white guitars do you? No.

6) It really does remind me of the Pismo PowerBook... I'm sorry but its true... Only the BlackBook has a far nicer keyboard (what were they thinking with the bronze?) and looks a bit smarter with the 16:10 aspect build instead of the 4:3 of yesteryear...

7) Agreeably, it is somewhat of a status symbol, especially if people are familiar with the Apple brand. The BlackBook acknowledges that you bought the top machine, because who is to say that a white MacBook is the low or medium grade machine without demanding to see the "about this Mac" window?

Well those are my reasons. I'm placing my order this week. Pity the college discount is only 8%... oh well. It'll still be the smartest notebook in the entire campus!

I bought the "BlackBook" because it was my second MacBook and I wanted the black one. I gave away my first "WhiteBook" to my sister. It still works fine, but hey, I'm just a generous person.

every time i see a blackbook i think to myself "wow that looks sharp"
and every time the person using it looks kinda tough

i gather most of you are trying to make up for your shortcomings
that said when i find an attractive girl with a blackbook i'll be sure to say hi

For some reason, people think that the black macbook makes them look rich. Well, it's ONLY $100 or so more...something like that doesn't make a person rich. IMO, it means that some people value their money more (in the case of white macbook owners) than others. To some, it may mean that they wanted something a bit unique/different (in the case of the black macbook owners). To some, tools that are dark-colored look less dirty than light-colored.

I've NEVER thought that a black macbook means that someone has money...I've never thought that for anyone owning an MBP either.

Mac owners sometimes amaze me. Computers are tools, not status symbols.

bc it doesnt scratch as easy DUHHH

I'm guessing it does, its just that you can't see it as easily...I've certainly seen black macbooks that look like pure a$$.

In fact, comparing my white macbook to a black display unit in the Apple store, scratches and such appear to be much more obvious on the black models, unless your face is like 1ft from the white one.

Crisis of conscience!

Having a really hard time with this exact question: BlackBook or upgraded White 250. I'd like to use that extra 100 bucks toward a 16 gig iTouch, so ... What's the final answer? Am I going to be happy with a whitebook in the long run? Do the BlackBooks really get that oily/dirty (post pictures, anyone?)? Thanks guys. Going to pull the trigger this weekend 7/12.

Go white. As it ages for a few months, the blacks look quite dirty and older, unless you are quite anal and wipe/clean it a lot. Most people ignore the care and wiping after 3 months or so. With whites, scratches and smudges dont appear much compared to blacks. Magic eraser for dirt and discoloration on armrest and keys, but wont remedy scratch problems on casings that shows more on the blacks.

Buy a Moshi armrest film. Upgrade your HD to 320 and your RAM to 4gb and you're set. ;)

The only thing I like about the black better is the more noticeable apple logo and matte finish on the top casings. I think it also looks a little more professional. Couldn't justify the extra cash just for that though. Yes the white does scratch easier due to the glossy casings, but I am REALLY careful with it, so I haven't had a problem with that. Thinking about going pro soon though...but just depends on how they update the new macbooks....I love aluminum.

To be honest, I like black on all my gadgets... that's it basically. For the black Macbook is my absolutely first contact to the Macintosh world at all, even bought my iPod after my Macbook, I thought before the purchase that when leaving old habits, I had to do it right...

I think the black MacBook looks smaller than the white MacBook because black has a thinning ability.
In real life, wearing black clothes makes you look thinner.

I guess i'm the only one who didn't know that it was a hundred dollars more...I just bought it from the retail apple store. i'm happy with my blackbook. Nuff said.

I like the look of the black MacBook.

But $200 for a color? No thanks. Spending the extra money on a color is idiotic.

250GB HDDs are well under $100 these days, so you're paying a lot just for that color.

You could buy a white MacBook, a 320GB HDD, 2.5" external enclosure for the 160GB you'll be upgrading, and still have more than $50 left over.

I have been watching this thread for a few days. i probably use a BlackBook for the hardest use. I work on heavy equipment (cranes, bulldozers etc.) and many times need the MB for system diagnosis and keeping service info handy. It does get quite dirty after a few days and with hydraulic oil, dust, grease and the occasional rain storm doesn't help. I do have a Case Logic sleeve for it that helps and somewhat protects it from the occasional bump but not a twenty foot drop, so my main reason is that it doesn't show the grime so much as a white MB would.

When you can just upgrade the white one to 250 gb and it's $100 less. Is it being dyed black worth $100?

I have to be honest. We're Apple fans. We buy things because they look nice. Despite Apple computers being far more expensive than similarly specced PCs (in at least some price ranges; Mac Pros are cheaper than equivalent Dells, for example), we still buy them. The next logical step is buying a Mac that's more expensive than another Mac with the same specs simply because it's a different color.

because its is the only black product apple offers besides the ipod. I really just wanted one to contrast the silver of all the other products and its so much more rare to see. and i like having something that a lot of others dont.

I got the white macbook over the black macbook. I'm a racist.

But no, seriously. I got the white one because:

1. The same configuration offered in black was more money. Color does not affect performance.

2. Both my previous laptops had black keys, black keys look like crap when they wear and get smooth/glossy.

3. I like the distinct look of the white laptop

4. My school didn't even offer the black one at a discount.

5. Did I mention, it was cheaper?

You know for one I'm really surprised this is still going. This is by far my most successful post. Thanks everyone.
Also its about time someone on here is like me and doesn't just give apple 100 more dollars for something because it's colored black. I think it's bull.

I bought the Black Macbook and upgraded to a 320GB hd and 4GB of ram. (and my PS3 got a 250GB hdd upgrade) ;)

Bottom line for me, it looks nicer. Primarily, it is the uniformity in color. Look at a "white" Macbook. the palm rest/keyboard top case is some weird off-white/grayish color. Doesn't look good to me.

That being said, I owned a 1st gen (1.83Ghz CD, combo drive) that I upgraded to a 120GB hdd and 2GB ram that I just recently sold. Although the driving factors for getting rid of it weren't cosmetic (I wanted 4GB of ram as I do a lot of virtualization), I was happy to pay the "black tax" to get something that looked (to ME) a bit nicer.

dunno if this was mentioned yet (only read page 1 of this thread) but Mr. Clean Magic Erasers do wonders for keeping your Blackbook looking sharp.
i use them dry about once a week and maybe wet once a month... this keeps my Blackbook looking the same as it did the first day i got it.

Also, the main reason i got the black one was at the time, many of the white ones had a defect that made the palm rests horribly discolored.
I didn't want my MacBook looking like some mechanic with greasy hands had been using it.

That and it reminds me of the old G3 Powerbook, which i absolutely loved except for one detail... the orientation of the Apple Logo.

So, does all that make me stupid, or superficial for upgrading to black? Not at all, i'd say it makes me sensible at the time of purchase, and nostalgic.

My message for white macbook owners who can't understand the black macbook... Don't let that inferiority complex get you down.
