Why FaceID is OBJECTIVELY a regressive technology

It's not that difficult. Try sitting down at a table and use your phone when it's on the table. I do this almost all the time I eat and use my phone at the same time.

Guess the X isn't for you. Face ID is super complicated. I can't even remember all those steps. I have to look at my phone?? That's crazy.
You not have to pick up the phone to use it. Maybe you're not familiar with it sitting on a flat surface and clicking the home button. Why the condescension? You can obviously use a phone while it's not picked up. And the looking at it is a reference to Face ID, you can look at a phone from an off angle just to check things a quick email or browse real quick without placing your face over the phone. I'm surprised you've never just used a phone while it's lying off to the side and on it's back.
I have a Pixel XL. When Google put the fingerprint scanner on the back of the phone, literally everyone in Android world went nuts about how horrible it is. ZOMG you have to "pick up" the phone to use it? Horrible.
Now that Samsung put their fingerprint scanner on the back, all is well with the world apparently.
As for Face ID, I'd have liked a solution where FaceID was implemented, but TouchID was retained on the back... but if face ID works reasonably well, I can live without TouchID.

You are still looking at it. Face ID works from an angle as well, but not to the same degree. Heaven forbid you look at that new beautiful OLED screen.

Maybe you're using your phone differently than I do and that's okay. Here is a scenario where they're the same number of steps.
7+ is right in front of my on my desk. In 1 motion I press the home button. It unlocks and I see my home screen.
X is right in front of me on my desk. In 1 motion I swipe up. It unlocks and I see my home screen.
There have been reviews that have stated you can pull your phone out of your pocket and swipe up as you're bringing the phone up to a viewing position. This activates the FaceID camera, it scans you and unlocks so I'm assuming that works the same if it's resting on your desk. We'll find out Friday for sure.
Regardless, to me this is an insignificant thing. Removal of the home button to achieve more screen real estate is a good thing. If it's not a cumbersome process to unlock your phone, I don't see the problem. Others might nit-pick and that's their prerogative. Nothing I've seen in the reviews have given me reason to think it's going to be an inconvenience.
I never said you don't look at it, I said you don't need to look at it to unlock it. The person I quoted said Touch ID is still 3 steps (pick it up, unlock it, then look at it). You don't need to pick it up or look at it to unlock it.
I get this usecase. I personally solved it by just using a kickstand case... much more comfortable to read whilst eating if the phone is upright... IMO. So for me, moot point, but I get it. Thankfully Apple gave us a choice. The iPhone 8 is great for all of the folks who like the traditional interface.
Your condescension doesn't refute what I'm saying. Here's a fact: I can unlock my iPhone without picking it up, without looking DIRECTLY at it, and with one single click of the home button.
Obviously, I can pick up the iphone x, raise or tap to wake, look at it, and swipe. But my argument is that isn't as seamless as the one gesture of touch id. Plus I think it stinks you can't have more than one person registered with it, my wife and I have each other's fingerprints for convenience.

That's fine, I am not trying to refute it, we have a difference of opinion. For me, I always pick up my phone and look at it to use it. So I either pick it up and swipe to unlock with Face ID or I pick it up and place my finger on the home button and press it for Touch ID. I don't see it as a big difference and I see advantages to Face ID now and in the future.

This entire 2 step/3 step discussion is obnoxious. Here is the bottom line: Touch ID is dead. They have said they are going all in on Face ID. It will be completely phased out over the next couple of generations of iPhone and iPad. Get over it. Get used to it.
Does swiping wake the screen? I didn't know this, I thought this was a separate gesture from waking the device... that would change things for sure.

Agreed there, I think Face ID will be better than Touch ID over time, but I guess what I'm saying is that I hope there's an option that matches the speed and convenience of Touch ID in its current state.
Right now there's an option on Touch ID to "rest to open" which allows me to simultaneously unlock and go to the home screen with one click. What I would love to see with Face ID (which would make it immediately better than Touch ID) is the ability to wake and unlock without swiping. So, basically, as you're raising the phone, it unlocks with Face ID and goes to the home screen. Yes it would skip the notification screen (but I don't like the notification screen anyway), but it would feel like magic at how fast and convenient that would be.
I'd like the option at least 🙂

I don't know. I'm going off what I saw in some reviews. This was one of them -
"As soon as you pick it up you can swipe it open...."
Apple has said it will scan from a desk so I don't think you need to pick it up to wake it, place it back on the desk to scan, and then swipe up. Keeping my fingers crossed that it's just a swipe. Otherwise why would it matter if it can scan from a flat surface, ya know...?

TouchID: pick up phone, place thumb on Home button. Boom. Done.
FaceID: pick up phone, swipe up. Boom. Done.
TouchID: pick up phone, place thumb on Home button. Boom. Done.

What I'm afraid is the case is that while the phone is laying on a flat surface you'd have to do the following:
1. Wake it - Tap screen or side button
2. Hover your face over it to unlock
3. Swipe
However, if you're correct and swiping both simultaneous wakes and indicates your desire to go to the home screen and it unlocks with face id while doing that swipe gesture, that would be awesome.
I'm surprised there hasn't been more of the unlocking method covered in these reviews because that is the thing we do most often! Answers will come I'm sure! Did you pre-order or are you waiting?

Because you are mistaken about TouchID. TouchID: pick up phone. Boom. Done. Especially since I keep my phone in my pocket - I take it out of my pocket with my thumb on the Home button, pressing it. It’s at the home screen long before I see the screen.
Just a preference. 🙂 I'd rather it be more seamless. Just pick it up while looking at it and be at the home screen, boom. done.

Mine is being delivered Friday. I'll be working from home waiting for UPS to come. My driver usually isn't there until around 3 or 4 but I'm hoping he comes early Friday.
