Think of TouchID as if there was nothing to touch. Pretend like TouchID simply knows you when you pick up the phone.

That's it. You simply pick up the phone. This is a one step process.

Now FaceID. You have to pick up your phone, look at your phone, and swipe up. Three steps.

The reason why I ask you to forget that you are actually touching the TouchID button is because after a while of using the phone, the physical interaction of touching the button is integrated into the process of simply picking the phone up.

This is an analysis of physical interaction between the two technologies. One requires you to simply hold your phone while the other is a three step process which includes picking it up, physically placing it in front of your face, and then using your hand to gesture for unlock.

If we use the principle that any technology can improve by simplifying it's process, we can see that TouchID is actually the superior technology.

Strictly objective.

Here we go again....Looking at your phone IS NOT an additional step. Are you saying that with Touch ID you were not planning on looking at the phone to use it?

Mine is being delivered Friday. I'll be working from home waiting for UPS to come. My driver usually isn't there until around 3 or 4 but I'm hoping he comes early Friday.
AWESOME. Congrats on the early grab. When you get yours, you get back to me about swiping to wake and if there is an option to skip swiping all together in accessibility. 🙂 I'm counting on you. 😎

If you didn't have to swipe up then any lockscreen notifications would be useless as soon as you look at the phone. They'd disappear immediately into Notification Center as the Home Screen appeared.

I much prefer the need to swipe given I don't always want to use my phone, I may just want to look for a missed call, message, email etc. This if anything is the same as Touch ID in that you can wake the phone and look at the lockscreen and then unlock/use should you wish to.

Or just checking the time. I'd be really annoyed if my phone went to the home screen every time I picked it up.

There are some limitations with face ID that I've noticed checking early previews of the phone that I hope/probably will get fixed in the future. I'm not buying the X (bought 8plus instead). I have my reasons. But I'll jump on the Face ID train next year.

Because you are mistaken about TouchID. TouchID: pick up phone. Boom. Done. Especially since I keep my phone in my pocket - I take it out of my pocket with my thumb on the Home button, pressing it. It’s at the home screen long before I see the screen.
And You're mistaken about FaceID.

I don't know about you but I use my phone by looking at it.

Take out of pocket, swipe up, done.

This confuses me, have you really never just unlocked your phone at arm's reach while it was laying on a flat surface just to check something real quick without hovering your face over the front of the phone? Man, I must do this 10x a day, just hit the touch id real quick without "looking" at it (when I say looking I mean like... unlock with Face ID looking), and then just go about my business.

To me, having to orient yourself to face the phone in a way I would never consider with Touch ID for a quick check is absolutely an extra step.

In your defense, that is not majority of the time and during those times, yah, it wouldn't be a second thought. As a solution, I would love going to the home screen just by looking at woken screen (raise to wake for example).

Oh good god people...why does it matter?!?! Face ID is here. They have said they are going all in on it. Touch ID is being phased out. Let it go.

This discounts the many times I have my phone laying next to me on the desk. Do you only have your phone in your pocket?

I would love not having to swipe, I think that would really go a long way to make each unlock that much faster. Wake and look. That's it.

The fact that you called "look at your phone" a step is ridiculous. Not really a step, more of an actual requirement don't ya think.

I'm not saying "no" to Face ID. We're just saying we'd like the process to have the option of no swiping to be in line with the option of "rest to unlock" for a speedier unlock.

Again... excited for Face ID. Just want it to match or surpass the tech it's replacing. 🙂

Does swiping wake the screen? I didn't know this, I thought this was a separate gesture from waking the device... that would change things for sure.

Agreed there, I think Face ID will be better than Touch ID over time, but I guess what I'm saying is that I hope there's an option that matches the speed and convenience of Touch ID in its current state.

Right now there's an option on Touch ID to "rest to open" which allows me to simultaneously unlock and go to the home screen with one click. What I would love to see with Face ID (which would make it immediately better than Touch ID) is the ability to wake and unlock without swiping. So, basically, as you're raising the phone, it unlocks with Face ID and goes to the home screen. Yes it would skip the notification screen (but I don't like the notification screen anyway), but it would feel like magic at how fast and convenient that would be.

I'd like the option at least 🙂

I think they will add that option at some point, but maybe not until iOS 12.

I do this, but only to check notifications or widgets. Tap to wake should work in this scenario. If I am actually opening an app, I will pick up the phone.

Has it been confirmed that is not an existing option with the X? I haven't seen that yet, but you're probably right. If Apple doesn't see it as a common use case, then they just don't make it an option. Sad. Well, for me.

I don't think you can look objectively at it.

For example, I look so much forward to using Face ID to unlock apps.

I use 1Password all the time, and right now, I have to open the app, then wait for the Touch ID to appear, move my finger from the screen (where it was, as I opened 1Password) to the homebutton to authenticate myself. With Face ID, I just open the app, and boom, it's authenticated.

In the end, I think that Face ID have many more plusses than Touch ID. We just have to get used to it.

It certainly can be an extra step. Face ID doesn't work at extreme angles, such as if it's flat on a table and you are sitting away from it, or you pull it out of your pocket to glance at something in a meeting under the table to be discrete.

Face ID requires you to make eye contact with the notch, and is much more reliable when held 10-20 inches from your face, something which many people don't do when trying to be discrete.

I Agree once you're at the home screen and navigating it's going to be great. But for the unlocking procedure, I would love to not have to swipe. Wake > look > home screen.

I haven't seen any confirmation so I guess there is still a shot. I think it's fine to give the option, but as you mentioned, Apple may not.

You can look at your phone at many different angles, distances and heights.
You will be "holding it wrong" if the sensor is not directed towards your face in order to scan you and unlock the phone.
Many times I hold my phone down near my stomach. And many other different situations and angles throughout the day. While it sits on the far right corner of my desk or inside my cars cup holder or on my passenger seat.
Many many situations that the camera will NOT be able to scan my face. Many people will notice how cumbersome this can become when having to lift the phone in a certain area and body height in order to be able to get access to your homescreen.
With touchID you dont even have to think about any of that. You put your finger on the home button for less than a second and you're in.
