The easy answer to the thread question is timing. Those who upgraded to the iPhone 6 will be due an upgrade this month.

Apple have completely missed a trick by putting the iPhone 8 on the 'S' cycle because it will either force people to keep their phone for an extra year, or forfeit the phone completely and upgrade this year. This is the cycle that usually creates the buzz and I can't understand for the life of me why they are not releasing the bigger upgrade this year?
It's prolly only for 2016 and 2017 that they are breaking the cycle. The anniversary iPhone needs a hefty bag of tricks up its sleeve and giving any upgrade worthy features to iPhone 7 would shortchange the 10th anniversary model

I'm planning on keeping the iPhone 7 and skipping the iPhone 7s. Be a nice upgrade to the iPhone 8.

There is no evidence of such features for iPhone 8. People are just making up their own features now.
Ming Kuo is the most reliable leaker in the industry.Whenever he has said something about Apple,90% of the time it has happened.Rock solid track record .He is so damn accurate I believe he has a tipoff in Cook's team itself

The general consumer doesn't care about an anniversary version I would say. They would likely care more about a worthy upgrade this year if they are on a 2 year cycle.

Not a chance he knows anyone on Cooks team. However he clearly has leaks available from the supply chain. That is much more believable. In fact considering the hundreds of people who must work on IPhones final design and prototypes just in China alone, it is surprising how little leaks.

Ever hear a conversation in a phone store? The average consumer doesn't care about most of the things we believe are hard and fast "talking points".

So 90% of the time he is right every time...
He did predict the antenna bands. Oh my lord spot on, that is why I am buying the iPhone 7, the antenna bands.

I never minded the antenna bands they're there for functionality purposes and I like how it breaks up what would be just a plain looking iPod back. I do agree it's a blessing and a curse to be as attentive and informed as us, whereas just about all of us know about certain problems and have a keener eye for problems on our devices the average consumer would never think about looking for.

I am calling it a feature because there are only 2 things which really changed. The headphone jack and the antenna bands. If you disregard both its just an iPhone 6SE.

I wouldnt mind the antenna bands if they were implemented like this

Looks miles better

Sure, like a racing stripe in a car is a feature.

The features of the iPhone 7 are likely to be the cameras, the camera on the 7 looks a lot bigger from the leaks we have seen, and the dual lens camer on the 7 Plus will be a big feature. Also the rumoured haptic feedback Homebutton and anything else that Apple may have up their sleeve that we just haven't heard about yet!

Microsoft did this with the Xbox One S. "We're coming out with this device, but the real new Xbox is coming after that."

Well, then why come out with the product at all? Now that we KNOW about the iPhone 8, we're not going to buy this phone WE'RE GONNA WAIT.

If you look at the phone, it looks just like an iPhone 6s. And with what we've been hearing, it pretty much IS an iPhone 6sII.

It's literally the nothing new iPhone. They did this before with the infamous "iPad 3"

We know a sh.it about iPhone 8, so yes, I'll buy iPhone 7.

I think it's pretty naive to say that those are the only thing that have changed considering we have no announcement on the product or it's features yet. And I think we really need to stop focusing so much on the casing as there is really only so much the phone is going to change over the years (new materials, thinner, etc.). For the iPhone 7, there is rumored to be improved audio, and improved screen, touch sensitive home button (which I am not sure of the benefits, but apple could surprise with some software improvements), camera improvements, etc. All of which are real world beneficial upgrades to a phone, not just hey look, it's in a new case.

Look up the definition of "feature".

"a distinctive attribute or aspect of something, have as a prominent attribute or aspect"

Are the antenna bands an integral part of the design or not?

You know after the 8 there will be a 9... so why buy the 8 wehen you can wait for the 9 the 10 the 11 and so on?

People buy because they want / need a device, they know there will be something better the year after (sometimes even 6 months after).

Also... what do we know about the 8?
All this anniversary update... when is the last time Apple did an anniversary update? The only one i Recall was the 20th anniversary Mac and if i recall well that did not work out as expected!!

My biggest concerns now is the form factor. I have to admit the new Samsung Note looks way better than the iPhone 7. There is a big chance I will switch this year and give Android a shot for the first time, I have been an iPhone owner since the 2007.

Honestly curious, what looks better that is going to warrant an entire OS switch? And you'll have to follow up and let us know how the switch goes. Seems totally worth it o_O

You mean you're going to keep the 7 and bypass the 8 next year and wait for the 8s. ;)

"Following Apple's standard naming scheme, with a numeric increase during even years to mark external design changes and an "S" increase during odd years to denote internal feature updates only, the 2017 iPhone would be called the "iPhone 7s."

Given the major changes Apple plans to introduce to the iPhone in 2017, it seems unlikely the device will receive an "S" name, so there's a good chance Apple may decide to skip directly to the next full number, naming the 2017 iPhone the iPhone 8. "

2007 - iPhone
2008 - iPhone 3G
2009 - iPhone 3GS
2010 - iPhone 4 (new design)
2011 - iPhone 4s
2012 - iPhone 5 (new design)
2013 - iPhone 5s
2014 - iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus (new design)
2015 - iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus
2016 - iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus
2017 - iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus

"iPhone 8 is a tentative name for the device -- it has not yet been confirmed by Apple -- but it seems to be the most logical choice for a major update. There's always the possibility Apple will call it something else or make 2017 the year it moves away from a numbered iPhone naming scheme."

So then what is doubling the number of cores? Since that doesn't meet that definition? It's a feature to me.

Good luck, I tried it a few years back and had the worse experience! The Galaxy S4 was a nightmare and TouchWiz was the worse OS! I was begging to go back to the iPhone!

An iOS user switching to Android after so many years?! I'm sure if you have never used Android before in between then you'll come back running. Make sure you return within 14 days. I'll see you here.

He will come back running after the initial wow factor wears off. Mark my words.

I wish you were around when I decided to try the S4 a few years ago :)
