It's not really. I think a lot of people who say that, haven't had an iPhone to compare with.

You could think that, but you'd be wrong. I know several people with a Galaxy Note Edge, some don't use the edge screen much, while others love it. None think an iPhone is more usable. Sound like you're passing off your own opinion as gospel.

This is again based on someone's knowledge in the field of usability. General population is not aware of these things because it's a niche field and people don't care much or observe how these things change their behaviour.

You keep repeating those words but aren't saying anything of actual value. I know people who use it and can articulate what they use it for, and you're sitting there behind your keyboard saying "no you can't, I have knowledge"

I just find it strange that Apple's standard of "always delivering our flagship devices on a two year cycle" now has suddenly become a 3 year cycle.

I don't know what sort of response you're expecting. Probably an example will help. Samsung has reduced the bezel on their flagship phones, a lot of users like this because the screen size is the same as iPhone but overall the phone has smaller footprint. People think bezels are waste of space, but they have a very good use for gaming, you rest your thumbs on them & seeing Apple is pushing iOS to break the gaming boundaries it's important. Also just picking the phone up from a flat surface is easier because bezels. That's better usability.

Does that make sense?!

Xbox' target market are all gamers, and they all know what to look for.
iPhone's target market are general public, and most don't know nor care. They buy a phone when they want one.

I find this situation funny though. Apple was always the one talking about this tech revolution, the post-PC era, and how fast tech is moving along, but look at the last iPhone update. Barely got a bigger screen. And 3D Touch that's pretty much it.

Oh, and Apple is so tied to the iTunes program and syncing.

"The post-PC era."

It could be because next year is the 10th anniversary and they want that one to be much different than the 6 and 7. I could be wrong.

I see the problem here... You're using the word "better" when you should be using the word "different" I suspect it's apple fanboyism at work here, and that's if I simply accept your examples. I've never had an issue picking up a Note Edge from a flat surface, nor have any of my friend had any more trouble playing their games then I have. More over they have quicker access to phone functions with their edge screen then I do with my iPhone. I was expecting a response that makes sense, but all I see is excuses for the iPhone and made up scenarios that don't actually happen. I've never seen anyone struggle to pick their Edge phones up, and I highly doubt you have either.

You know, a lot of people seem to think that this year's phone is being intentionally shortchanged because next year is the anniversary, but when you think about it, there's no logic in that. It's not like Apple gets some special anniversary bonus where phones sold next year count for double or something. They should be trying to put out the best phone they can and get the most sales every single year. If the 2017 phone brings major technological advancements, that's just because they weren't ready in 2016. I doubt they held them back, unless Apple doesn't like making money.

I have my S7 Edge and 6+ With me here at work, and you got me testing picking up my phones... LOL. No issues picking up either phone. There are some annoyances without side bezels, but very minor. Still like and use my 6+. I like both phones, but think I'll skip the iPhone 7 this year. Hope to see some of features I'm enjoying on my S7 Edge in the 2017 iPhone. I don't think people would be to upset if Apple desides to remove the side bezels. All of a sudden.... usability is not an issue if Apple does it.:p

I really don't think you understand what usability is. Labelling everything as "fanboyism" is ignorance at best. I'm not a fanboy & I appreciate good design. That's not to say I don't see the issues either.

Some of the issues are that the edge feels considerably more slippery. The screen bleeds light at the end when you watch videos, the bezels are difficult to hold, especially while playing high speed games.

I'd like to see some features coming over to iPhone as well but they're mostly related to the OS more than the hardware.

Oh and Apple has issues with usability as well at times. They've reduced usability with the iPhone 6 curved design because it's way more slippery than the previous models, but they had to compensate for the bigger screen size, otherwise even the non plus model will feel too big in the hand.

As I said, I like both phones, but the edge light bleed as you call it... I notice that more on the 6+ probably because the edge is thinner. I don't notice it as much on the S7 Edge even when I look for it. Screen is very functional... especially under bright sun light. Still think my 6+ looks a bit better indoors. Even if I see light edges more on my 6+, it doesn't bother me much.

Not sure about advantages of bezels in gaming... I only game on my PC rig (in sig), PS4, or our Xbox one. Mainly use my phones for is calling, texting, email, music, videos/movies, browsing, and sometimes a camera. Both phones are fine for what I do.

To me both phones are slippery... I'm pretty anal about how I handle my phones... either I have a death grip on my phone, or its in my pocket. Haven't dropped my phones in years.

I can't say anything bad with either phone... both have things I like and somethings I don't. Both aren't perfect... but both does a fine job for what use my phone for.

not strange at all. mobile tech has a huge growth last few years. and like everything else, it reaches maturity and will slow down. it has happened to window, PC, and Intel. why apple is an exception? that is why Apple is looking into another area to grow, car.

I'm not saying that apple's not moving to a three year cycle, but something happening once doesn't confirm a new trend.

They'll make money no matter what, though. They'll make a lot on the 7, regardless of how much it looks like the 6 and they'll make a ton more on the 8 if they change any physical features.

But they make less money right now if they intentionally make their phone less appealing this year. Apple has a lot of share holders who are looking at what they make every quarter and the value of their stock is assessed based on such. Lines like, "we'll make money anyway" or "we'll really make a killing next year" don't cut it when you're conducting business at the level that apple does, especially when they're already getting slack for phone sales declining for the first time ever recently. Tomorrow's profit is hypothetical. Wallstreet cares about what's happening right now.

Not sure what those have to do with each other. Actually, I'm not sure what your argument is against bigger screen and 3D touch.

I agree that iOS should be completely independent of iTunes at this point, especially when Apple is positioning iPads as the computer for many lay consumers. But I still don't understand where you are going with this with your point about iPhone 7 vs 8.

That was the point. You just said it.

How it relates to iPhone 7 vs 8 is... you see this slow down. 3D Touch... That's the latest in innovation that Apple can provide.

iPhone 6s 2—The latest in innovation Apple can provide.

The iPhone 6 with the bigger screen—The latest in innovation that Apple can provide!

The iPhone SE with the smaller screen—The latest in innovation that Apple can provide! For the last couple of generations, it's been stuff we've seen before.

And now we have to wait on the iPhone 8.

For years now Apple has been bringing cold meat to the table. So Apple shouldn't be the one talking about innovation and the Post-PC era. It's hypocritical!

Really? Apple has been "bringing cold meat" to the table when their phone sales have been breaking record after record?

I'm gonna buy it as well... I always get a new phone every two years, and yes, the design hasn't changed a lot, but there are plenty of new features compared to my iPhone 6.
Also, I got the 6 Plus when it was new, brought it back and got an iPhone 6 (because I found the 6 Plus to be too big), but this time I'm definitely going for the Plus again.

Not sure yet, but 1 GB of ram isn't really enough anymore for me, so I don't know if I want to spend another year with this phone.
After two years, I can (you don't have to) bring them back to my provider, when I get a new phone, and three weeks later I get a 'new' refurbished phone.
So, when I get my 7 Plus, I give my iPhone 6 to my provider and get a refurbished one a bit later, that I can sell or give to somebody else. I always give mine away.
You can only do this if your phone isn't damaged too bad, and I always wear cases and screen protectors. My phone has only one scratch in a corner, which they won't care about.
You don't have to, but I do this because I don't care that I don't have my phone for 3 weeks if I have a new one, and I get one with a new battery and that looks pretty new.

I always get a new phone every two years, in the beginning of the year (Early 2011 -> iPhone 4, Early 2013 -> iPhone 5, Early 2015 -> iPhone 6) but I'm gonna change carriers so I'll probably try to get mine in October or November.
It's better to wait a little because you never know. Apple sold iPhone 5's with bad batteries in it when it came out (September 2012) and they changed something with the processor of the iPhone 6 in November 2014 (in Europe at least), so I want to make sure I have a 'good' one.
