Ok, I think I found a fix:

1. Start by enabeling & disabeling the flight mode

2. Sign yourself out of the store

Report if this worked for you

Edit: sorry to get your hopes up, but mine crashed after 5 min, so problem remains unsolved

Nice try, sadly I think there is no "trick" to fix this. Only Apple can.

I've noticed one more thing.
If I'm close to the router, internet never stops working. But as I walk out of my room, I have the issue that we all already know.

Anyone else noticed it?

More info

I installed 4.2GM three times last night (from 3.2.1, 3.2.2 and then clean install) every time the wifi issue. The connection to wifi stays alive but the (DHCP obtained) IP address changes to a default, in my case form 10.0.0.2 to 169.xxx etc.
When I put the ipad on my bedside cabinet close to the router it stayed connected all night and worked fine this morning, however when i took it into the lounge it started dropping out again. A few (not very scientific) experiments with distance form router lead me to believe it's a signal strength issue. An earlier poster advised it worked fine with his MiFi but as you tend to have them close that might make sense.

Anybody else experience this?

Still no wifi problems here and I'm now on my work's wifi. Router at home is a ZyXEL and the router at work is a Buffalo Technologies. Surprisingly I didn't have to enter the password for either router after going from 3.2 to 4.2GM, I guess all was saved in my backup. Not sure if it matters but I never installed any of the betas, went right from original 3.2 to 4.2GM.

I had the problem, too.

Upgraded my iPad 3G 32GB to 4.2GM, lost WiFi every few seconds after starting a browser (didn't matter which one). Did a network settings reset. Didn't help.

Did a full restore without restoring from backup and had the problem immediately after setting up the WLAN connection. No apps had been installed at that time, and no email accounts set up. Didn't help.

Restored again, but this time restoring the previous backup. Didn't help.

Turned off MobileMe Bookmark and Note synching as recommended in a previous post - and the problem went away.

As described above, I also had the problem with the clean install, where I hadn't set up MobileMe yet. So I don't see why turning off parts of MobileMe should have helped, but it did.

When I had the problem, I tried...
- an unencrypted public WLAN
- my encrypted WPA2 private WLAN
- an Enterprise WPA2 WLAN

...and I experienced the issue either way. So the issue doesn't seem to be WLAN type / encryption or router related.

I'm having major wifi problems since the GM 4.2. I have both upgraded and done the full restore. This sucks. :(

Yes, this is EXACTLY what my IP changed to. Have you tried downloading a fresh copy of GM from Apple?

I have a clean copy, installed it (paid developer account) and get these random ip changes as well. beta 3 was running so well, whyyyy???

No doubt Steve Jobs will put it down to user error, and release do a demo of other devices not working :)

I think I'll hold off upgrading until this is fixed.

No problems here at all with the GM.
Airport Extreme b,g,n mixed network.
I also used MyWi on my iPhone and the iPad had no problems staying connected.

My guess is that there is some conflict with the router settings for some people, maybe try reseting the router or changing the channel will work.

No problems with the router settings, as the iphone works completely fine this DEFINITELY is ipad software related and there has to be some connection between the users experiencing it

Come on, why denying that there is a bug?
A lot of users here and in the rest of the internet are saying that they've never had problem with previous betas, but now with GM they have this issue.
And everyone is saying that any other computer or device is connecting fine as usually.

Come on.

I wasn't denying anything just throwing out some ideas instead of just whining and complaining.

Also since this is not happening to everyone this may not be just a software issue on the GM.
Anyway just a thought.

Software issues don't have to affect every user. For instance, back in April, when there was that famous WiFi issue fixed with a software update, my iPad wasn't affected by that.

If you read the previous pages of this thread you could see that some users are trying to discover a "trick" to resolve this issue.

I definitely have the issue as I identified early on in a different thread. Seems to have sowed up for me in 4.2 GM (only). Here's the issue I'm having with my iPad 16GB WiFi only device:

"My only issue so far is that I lose Internet connectivity over WiFi after a period of use. I'll be accessing the web either through an app (like Twitter) or Safari and all of a sudden it will hang. If I turn off WiFi and turn it back on it usually resolves it (until the next time). Also, I reset Network settings which fixed it temporarily. Looks like the old WiFi connectivity problem might be back (at least for me, anyway)."

I've noticed one more thing.

This is EXACTLY what happens to me. My brother and I have rooms next to each other, and we both have 64GB Wi-Fi iPads. Both of us have had them for about 2 months now I believe, and we have never had any issues. The router is in my room mounted on the wall, and we are able to surf perfectly fine while in our respective rooms.

The problems come to life when we go to the living room downstairs across the house. We both have the SAME problem! We both upgraded to GM, and we are both getting identical problems. We never had any issues prior to updating when it came to distance or obstacles, but now it seems like the Wi-Fi finder gives me a fake reading. I used to get 1-2 bars downstairs, and now I'm at 2-3 with a connection that dies between web pages.

I know this is that very reason, because I walked into my room twice about to downgrade when it would suddenly "work". I love 4.2, so I would desperately give it a last attempt effort, and it would automatically work. I've even tried the reboot downstairs, and it would work for maybe 2 minutes.

I'm not saying people aren't having a 100% experience, and that just gives me hope. What I'm asking is for you to give some distance between you and your router in a home network environment a try before giving it the thumbs up.

I have the same issue with Wi-fi. My connection stalls when I leave the room my router is located. As soon as walk back into the room, my connection starts. I should clear that up a bit. It may work for a few minutes but it will eventually stall and will not continue loading any pages.

Seems to be some issue with signal strength less then 100%? Or perhaps any type of interference?

I had this problem with the other betas but not nearly as bad. After reading other post, I tried moving away from the router and discovered it has something to do with distance from wireless access point??

This is torture. I have never had wifi issues until this "golden master". Time to downgrade to the 3rd beta.

Wow, looks like we may be onto something. My wifi will not drop off in my home office which is whe my router is. Once I leave my office and go to any other part of the house it drops out after a few minutes.

What would make it do that? I have full wifi signal in all of my house.

I just want to input my experience on this:

I have NO WiFi issues with the iOS 4.2 GM version.

I ONLY use public WiFi hot spots at my local(Los Angeles) Starbucks and public library.

I installed the GM iOS on top of iTunes 10.1 Beta 2 on Mac OS 10.6.4, if that makes any difference.

I downgraded to 4.2 beta 3, and now my wifi works fine. I never had a problem with my wifi until the GM release.

I have no issues with the GM release. I use a Time Capsule if that makes any difference. I also have MobileMe with no issues.

Seems there is an issue with the distance to your router. When I was in the bedroom, wifi failed. However, in the living room, much closer to the router, the connection worked...

Any similar experiences around?
