Ok sounds good, yes the syncing of the Heart Rates rates to Health is the one spot I have zero control over and rely on Apple to do the job. Sometimes it just doesn't sync, which hopefully that new option to "Sync Last Recorded Sleep" will amend until watchOS 2 gets here with better reliability.

Looks like a great app, gonna buy myself a copy soon!

New Update!

Last one for watchOS 1 — looking to the future now...

How hard on battery this app is ?

When I go to sleep, most of the time, my AW is between 25 and 50 % of battery. Do I have enough or I should recharge it before going to sleep ?

Excellent question... I'd like to know this too.

What I usually do is set DND, turn off activate on wrist raise and my battery drops about 5% overnight. Before i took those steps I think the drop was around 10-12%. I think the dev recommends putting the watch on the charger about about an hour or so before you go to bed and then put it on the charger when you wake up and that will keep it near 100%. I have done that and it works well for me.

Exact routine as me. Usually have about 93% when I wake up from 7-8 hours of sleep and Sleep Pulse activated. I don't think this app using any battery. You launch just to put the starting point for tracking and then you reload the app in the morning to set the ending point for your sleep and only then does it read the window of sleep and grab the info from health app for heart rate.

That's how I interpret the app. Love knowing the sleep pattern.

Yes, the app uses limited power, I also recommended enabling Do Not Disturb mode on the watch so power is not wasted on notifications.

Furthermore, I have been working on the app for watchOS 2 — even with motion tracking it makes it through the night well because the app actually only directly reads the data when it is live (following Apple's APIs).

Also for all users who have been using it, you will be happy to know with watchOS 2 the whole process of going to your iPhone to "sync" the data should disappear :).

So, for 2.0 release, you'll monitor movement and heart beat ?

What about heartbeat ? I think in watchOS1.1, the AW read your heartbeat every 10 minutes ONLY when you're not moving.

Is there a way in watchOS 2.0 to override this and force Sleep Pulse to read it every "X" time even if you're moving ? Because when we move during night, it's not a lot of movement...I don't think it should be counted as "movement".

I suppose the more heartbeats you have (and the more motion tracking you catch), the more precise it will be.

Also there is some good ideas in "sleep cycle" ios app like asking you how was your sleep, was it a stressful day, etc. I don't have you app yet, so I don't know what features you already have.

Does it give you a score on your sleep quality ? I know sleep cycle calibrate for 4-5 nights then gives you a score.

Gives you too the possibilty to wake you up at the right time. Listen to smooth music/sound when you're going to sleep (played on iphone, not watch), graph showing correlation of activity of the day vs sleep, etc

Is you 2.0 version is ready for watchOS2 release ?

thanks

Sorry for my english

I bought the app, yesterday. $3.99 on the app store, very reasonable. Here are some of my initial impressions. The app is very easy to use on both the iPhone and Apple Watch. My Apple Watch was at 100% when I went to bed, and 88% when I woke up. I did not use the DND mode.

With a sleep tracker app, I want to see when I wake up. I woke up twice last night, and physically left the bed. The data doesn't make that easy for me to see. In comparison the night I've shown with the Fitbit app, it clearly shows the time that I got up left the bed and returned by the purple line. I also like the way that the Fitbit app gives the information at the bottom about how long it took me to fall asleep, restless times, and awake times. I think these would be great things to incorporate into this app.

This app could also be utilized during a period of the daytime as a pulse tracker to look at exercise if were set up that way. Just a suggestion for a future app version.

I believe that this is a great app and well worth the money. I would be hesitant to call it a sleep tracker app, yet. It is my plan to continue to use it. While I love the Fitbit, my problem is that I lose those trackers which are not inexpensive. Plus I bought the Apple Watch in the hopes that it could replace my Pebble and Fitbit.

First Image is Sleep Pulse app from the OP. Second and third images are from the Fitbit app. These are for different days and are just for comparison.

The update with that fix was suppose to go live today, however because I mentioned "iOS 9" in the update description Apple rejected the update..... because I am referencing "pre-release" software.

Yes for 2.0 both can be monitored. Concerning 2.0 heart could be overrided, however it would take out the battery so this option probably won't be feasible. More heartbeats would provide better sleep with motion, however motion can be tracked every sec.

Currently it provides a score each night — and shows how long you cumulatively sleep each night.

Having it wake you up or put you to sleep with music I don't believe will be possibe. The way apple has implemented the new feature only allows for access to the motion when the app is live — the watch tracks it in the background for all other matters.

Thank you for the feedback, most of what you see in the fitbit app for sleep tracking will be available for Sleep Pulse with watchOS 2 when motion tracking is available, I am working really hard to get it out for the launch next week! Heart Rates are so variable it makes a lot of the things like seeing when you wake up or in light sleep hard to analyzes. Though that being said, it still explains alot about your sleep and when paired with a motion graph should give you a full detail about your sleep quality.

Concerning the Exercise — Something like this? Exercise Pulse https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/exercise-pulse-heart-rate/id1019909257?mt=8 This app is available at a bundled discount for sleep pulse users and actually links your resting heart rate from sleep pulse into exercise pulse so you can track your fitness health over time.

Second night using the Sleep Pulse app from the OP. This time I put the Apple Watch on DND and it only used 8% of the battery during the night. I'm going to set my iPhone to automatically go into DND mode for a window each night so that I don't forget.

Thank you for responding to the post and I look forward to your new version when the new OS comes out. The Exercise Pulse was exactly what I was thinking. It's not really something for me, but just another revenue stream for a similar app. I now realize that I already had another of your apps, Power Nap with Health Sync, as much as I'd like to, I rarely get to take those power naps but I liked the app and was hoping for a full sleep app like Sleep Pulse. Keep up the good work. For those that haven't tried it, yet, it's worth the small price.

I have a question. Your graph tells the heart rate.

Right now, I'm using Sleep cycle.

https://cdn.psychologytoday.com/sites/default/files/blogs/103195/2013/10/134996-134866.png

In this screenshot, you can see when you're awake, sleeping or "deep sleeping".

Is heart rate really gives you your sleep state ?

If I have a nightmare and your heart rate goes up, I suppose the app will see this as awake ?

Movement is maybe better than heart rate ? Or both is the best ?

I suppose your 2.0 release will be more precise about your state

Yes, Heart Rate shows things like when you enter REM Sleep or are awake, problem is its hard to distinguish between either one. In REM sleep your Heart Rate spikes, and when you wake up it spikes also. Motion will fill the gaps in the data with the 2.0 release.

Cabrown, do you need any beta testers for 2.0? I've upgraded an iPhone 6+ to iOS 9 and my Apple Watch to watchOS 2. Note, I used Sleep Pulse last night on the new OS, flawless.

At the moment probably not, I am really pushing to finish the 2.0 update this weekend so hopefully it comes out within the next week ‚ the problem with a sleep app is I have to wait days to get results back — I may stick to my close beta testers for the 2.0 release however releases after that I am always open to beta testers.

Are you still experimenting the correlation between heart rate and motion or this 2.0 release is fully tested for this ?

I might not know what you are meaning by experimenting with the correlation? — There is a correlation between heart rate and motion during sleep and has been analyzed and proven in many studies. I have also got motion tracking working, however I want to really update the UI of the app as well — I am pushing too finish it this weekend for a release hopefully next week.

Sorry, english isn't my first language.

What I meant is, yes there is a correllation between them. I'm sure of that. But interpreting the results and develop an application that gives you the right results must need some testing. It's one thing to have the date but it's another to interpret all thoses numbers and trying to determine if you're sleeping, dreaming, awake, etc...

Oh yes I understand and agree with what you mean. At least in the first release of 2.0 it will act as a regular motion tracker (seeing when you are asleep, awake, deep sleep, etc) and separately provide your heart rate for your own comparison and understanding.

In a future update I would like to more directly correlate the two — however I have not looked fully into it, the difficultly with Heart Rates is they can really vary per individual so at least I have found it hard to find the perfect algorithm for them. On the contrary things like motion tend to be more stable and can be calibrated per user with less difficulty.
