I legitimately think he’s complaining that Apple recommended he use compressed air to clean the keyboard.

That’s the way it seems to me anyway.

Well, quite frankly I also have a problem with it.

I never needed to do any compressed air keyboard blowouts on a 2015 or earlier model (or any Apple desktop keyboards) and thus they never before had that support document.

I don't care at all what other manufactures are doing or have done. I'm just looking, in isolation, at how far Apple hardware has fallen (on this particular point)

They have had that in their support documents before though. It’s SOP for keyboard maintenance.

Ok - well - I don't honestly care about the minutiae of the support document existence timeline..

All I know is nobody (essentially) was ever worried about their Apple keyboards prior to 2016.

Well I for one am not worried about mine. If you are, by all means, buy elsewhere.

Not an advertisement.

No, it's more a sad endorsement of a poor design, that no other notebook OEM as far as I am aware of is suffering from. Wrap it up how you want the Butterfly keyboard is and remains to be less reliable than all previous Mac portables keyboards. Some might call that regression, add in the $700 repair cost for yet another poor design issue it's hardly surprising many are less than pleased.

TBH they have a valid point...

Aren't opinions a beautiful thing?

The MBP price is a significant issue, I must admit. When I compare to a 17" Lenovo laptop (with a great selection of ports) for around $1400...

...it definitely gives me pause. But having choices is good.

Yeah, too bad its gimped with Windows. Might make a decent Linux machine.

Was this whole thread just made to create a back and forth with those of us who are really frustrated and speaking up/out?

It seems like you're on a mission to defend and refute every point made that's opposite of your opinion.

Isn’t that what these forums are about? Back and forth surrounding discussions on Apple products.

Which is again, indeed an opinion. ;)

Not the 30% of the price of the notebook to effect repair of jammed keys ;) Top class design indeed. If all your going to do when you cant support your argument is say "opinion" your just wasting your words.

Issues with the Butterfly keyboard are common and even recognised by Apple, yet some pretend all is perfect in the world of Apple, I wonder Why o_O

Good enough, or do you need a recount...

Way to use the poll out of context lol. The yes or no votes do not reflect why. There’s dozens of reason why someone may or may not buy a new MBP today. Those reasons may or more not be related to what you deem as design flaws. Someone might simply say no because they want to wait, period.

Pretty interesting to see the poll results thus far..
61/39 in favor of "not feeling comfortable buying a 2018 MBP at this time"

Very sensible group on the forum on this topic.
Smart..

Wait and see is a good strategy right now if you're able to.

I wouldn't buy one, but probably not for the same reason as most people.
My main reason for not buying a new MBP today is the same reason I wouldn't buy any laptop with the same design problems as I see them.
I want my machines to be user repairable at least up to a point. Opening them, cleaning them, replacing the thermal paste are all things I see as things that I can't accept compromise unless I ever become rich and just don't give a f about money.

I respect that. User serviceability would be an awesome thing with MBP machines. Unfortunately I think Apple has moved many years past that with their design choices and obsession with thinness. I miss the days of taking the back off my MBP to throw RAM and a HD in as well!

There's something you and I can firmly agree on.

It's a really great point.

Simply being the creator of a thread does not mean one controls what happens, in context and on topic with related conversation, within that thread.

MR is a public and open forum, as long as members abide by the rules they are fully entitled to their opinions. The bigger concern is people wanting to shutdown threads and or comment if it doesn't follow their own personal narrative.

Safe to say the Mac is diminishing, as even as little as 5 years ago an Alternatives to Mac Hardware forum on MR would not be remotely conceivable, as ever Apple owns that one. Tracking back to this tread people are no longer comfortable by default with Apple due to increased pricing, excessive nickel & diming, diminished reliability tied to repairs now taking several day to over a week due to design that prohibits ease of any upgradability and repair.

For me it's disappointing as Apple's current trajectory precludes any new Macs, nor does being behind the curve or at a competitive disadvantage wash very well - Apple looses professional business, it has in our case. Some have been with the Mac for decades, sadly it now seems Apple is no longer with us...

Trust me, I have not been thrilled with the price hikes either! Nor have I been happy with some of the design choices coming out of Cupertino. That said, I still think the MBP is the best portable IMHO. I have tried many different PC laptops and always come back to Mac. I know this might sound trivial, but the MBP trackpad alone is enough reason for me to stay. I don't know why, but for some reason PC laptops just cannot get their trackpads right. Again, I know that might sound petty, but it is a huge deal to me. This combined with macOS is why I remain. I know that Windows has come a long way and is a very stable and viable option, but for some reason I still just cannot stand it. I do not like it or enjoy using it at all. macOS to me is a fluid and seamless OS that is a pleasure to use. When you look at the big picture of the entire ecosystem and how well Apple devices communicate nearly flawlessly it becomes (is still) a pretty enticing package.

Agree about macOS
I just hope they don't ruin it w/ this Marzipan/iOS apps on Mac effort.

It's shocking to me the garbage they shipped in Mojave as initial efforts there.
I realize those were just first efforts, but they shouldn't have shipped them at all.

HIG violations and normal MacOS conventions broken all over the place.

Agreed. The slow marriage taking place between macOS and iOS is a little concerning to me as well. I certainly hope they do not end up bastardizing a wonderful OS!
