Just like the headphone jack, right? Because Apple’s not stubborn and it totally makes sense for them to backtrack on device features like that...

Honestly, if FaceID works as promised, why would you even need TouchID? There’s no added benefit unless FaceID is a total failure, and even if it is (which I wouldn’t bet on), Apple would probably throw money at fixing its issues rather than roll back their devices to what they are already treating as an inferior solution.

I'm not so sure the usability of Face ID will be accepted by everyone. It clearly has problems where you want to momentarily wake the device to see notifications, and without putting your face in the field of view, for example. The more I thought about this I decided to let the tens of millions of early adopters give it a go, and maybe Apple will make changes, or add Touch ID along with it for the next go-around.

You should have waited until the technology was ready and hold back the X until 2018 and only released the 8 and next year only released the X. Too late now, the cat is out of the bag.

You can't hold back the iPhone X to next year! Then it would have be called the iPhone XI. It's called the iPhone "X" because 2017 is the 10th anniversary of the iPhone.

Whatever. TouchID will be back next year..

After they made the claim of how much more secure/accurate FaceID is than TouchID I very much doubt it

Can't even see them including it as another option

A classic case of a solution (Face ID) in search of a problem (Touch ID). The latter is more reliable and no slower. Apple are strapped for new ideas again and think because nobody else is doing Face ID then surely it must be a good thing right? There's a reason Samsung et al ain't doing it and it's not due to lack of innovative know how. Apple have confused the "less is more" idea (removing features in the name of 'courage') with the concept of progess. Now the 'progress' options have been depleted and there's not much else to remove-the next step,is adding 'features' that nobody really wanted in the first place. And that's a slippery slope to go down.

Touch ID is currently on the most premium iPads and Macbooks as well as one of the "flagship" iPhones (8). I am guessing it will continue to be present in those products for a few years. I doubt Apple will add FaceID to the iPad.

To be honest given that the iPhone is the biggest money maker for Apple i think you'll see all (or most) new innovations coming to it first and then rolled out to the Macbooks etc. The iPad is the only device that gets some things first like TrueTone

With these delays iPhone X seems more like a 2018 Launch than 2017

If you can't get an iPhone X at launch in 2017 did it really launch?

I just thought, what are the health risks of those thousands of dots pointing at your face so often? Cancer?

Believe its infrared light (i.e. small amount of heat), which you get constantly throughout your day, so probably nothing. Now having the radio transmitter close to your head all the time or resting your hand next to a Qi wireless charging pad and their output, long term...that's a question with a much more murky answer at this point.

Apple isn't going to just not use this technology. Clearly they think this is the future of their phones. Maybe earlier than they wanted due to not having the ability to get Touch ID under the screen.
Exactly.

Expect FaceID to come to MacBook (Pro) and iMac in the next couple of years, and to be a general access control feature on phones, computers, restricted areas (doors) etc. within the next 5 to 10 years....

... and it even works with sunglasses

My main problem with this is that Touch ID is a much more convenient option. When I go to the store and use Apple Pay, grabbing my phone out of my pocket usually already has my finger on the button and TouchID just goes. Now I have the extra move of pulling the phone up to a spot it can see my face. I personally thought nothing of TouchID until I started using it originally on my 5s. Now it's one of the most convenient things. This is why I went with an 8+ instead of waiting for the fight to get an X.

As much as I think ditching TouchID is a bad idea, just like the headphone jack before it, Apple isn't exactly known for going back once they replace something or declare it unnecessary. Those holding out for the return of TouchID might find that they've waited for nothing.

i think with the X, you’ll be able to see notifications more easily than with the other phones, right?

you don’t need to unlock to see notifications. only wake the phone..
and with the X, you can wake the phone by touching the screen whereas you can’t do that on the other phones.

Would have been easier to just place the new touch id on the power button. I am no engineer though, more like an imagineer (I hope Disney is hiring).
