Bookmarks, history and so on is actually SLOWER on my G4 700MHz. Opening one of my folders on the bookmarks-bar actually took close to a minute..

Am I the only person who really can't see the point of Apple devoting resources to the task of porting Webkit to Windows? Why does Windows need another browser? It already has all the bases covered, IE7 for people who don't know any better, Firefox for people who are intelligent and Opera for those who like it's... uniqueness.

Surely instead of giving some programmers the job of executing this, in my opinion, pointless task they should have put those programmers on the Leopard team? Maybe then we could at least have it a few days earlier.

I don't even use Safari on my Macbook, I use Firefox 2 and I couldn't possibly be any happier with it

Your last sentence should have been your first one. If you do not use the SW, then I can understand where you may not see much value in this. I am just beginning to read this thread, but I expect there are others who agree with you. How do you know these programers are not on the Leopard team? Maybe this is just a concurrent-parallel process?

Guess what else - you can't resize the windows except using the bottom right corner. If this is to catch on in any numbers at all in Windows, that has to change.

I agree and actually find this some what annoying in OS X as well. There are times when I would really like to be able to to resize a window from the side.

what about an "OPEN NEW TAB" button?

It's been in Safari forever, just hit command T. Or does it absolutely have to be a button instead of a key command?

i see i'm not the only native mac user who "apparently" doesn't have the system requirements to run Safari 3.0 (on my iMac Core 2 Duo, with 70GB free space)... ???

Your Safari is probably either renamed or moved from the applications folder. Check both of those.

iPhone compatibility. Windows version of safari makes it much easier for devs to create and test pages that will work on the iPhone. And mac compatibility is a nice little side effect.

Degrading

Is it possible to have the beta installed alongside 2.0.4? Or at the very least, downgrade later? Apparently I'm not a risk-taker.

Differneces in the new 3.0 Safari builts

I’ve been using the 9a410 built Safari version 3.0(5522.5) as oposed to the new download available from the apple page 3.0 (522.11). And the only difference I could find was the fact that in the 9a410 included version the tabs display HTML preview in the alt text when hovering the mouse over a tab, instead of 522.11 where you just get the full title of the tabs page.

For all those with missing text

ok as no one else seems to have posted it. I managed to get my safari working by following a post on apple discussion boards.

On XP (assume vista is the same)

go to C:\program files\safari
find folder called safari.resources
copy fonts in folder to C:\windows\fonts
go back to safari folder and rename safari.resources to something else.
start safari
ignore the error
go back to safari folder and put original name on safari.resources folder
try safari again.

This worked for me.

As a side note. According to the info in safari it appears to be based on netscape, which is either the predecessor of firefox or based on firefox :)
Anyone know how to tweak the render settings like in firefox

I think Safari for Windows is a good idea, I just hope everyone who tries it at this point and has problems (like I did) remembers that it's still in the beta phase and problems are to be expected with any piece of beta software.
u know, im a beta tester most of the time, i even run pre-alpha apps, if this safari is indeed beta, i can't imagine the final will be much better, altho i hope so,

but as i said in previous post, some problems, apple probably won't even try to solve, like, breaking windos ui such that it becomes resource hog , its there since QT!!

On Vista Ultimate the beta is...definitely a beta. The problem however isn’t so much Apple’s implementation of the software. I don’t really care that it doesn’t use the Aero theme – iTunes doesn’t and I don’t see any complaints.

The bigger problems I believe are more underlying, and probably contained within the webkit.

Pages don’t appear properly – something IE7 and FF manage fine, and something I understand is a common complaint on OSX as well (I’ve only used macs (G5’s) for NLE and content creation so no real internet experience). Font rendering is also very strange – it would be far better relying on the default windows clear type implementation.

It’s a memory hog and is dog slow (1.2GHZ ulv Core Duo, 1GB RAM). This is variable as sometimes its perfectly useable and other times I’m left reaching for IE7. Also, you get a couple of seconds lag between typing in the address bar and it appearing on screen.

The built-in spellchecker is excellent as is just being to use [enter] as opposed to [ctrl]+[enter] . I also like the ‘private browsing’ feature.

I feel that once its more stable it will be my main browser on my old XP machines (I have ‘issues’ with firefox – never liked it) but it will only ever supplement IE7 on Vista – IE7 is more closely integrated and its hard to totally avoid using it using the current alternatives. I don’t want to sound to negative. Safari is at times a useable product and kudos to Apple for releasing it, even if at this stage its only really useful to web developers.

Sorry for sounding like a dunce, but what are Safari Input Managers?

Go to Library/Input Managers and see if there are any Safari third party add-ons in there such as Stand, Safari Block, Safari Plus, Saft, or Pith Helmet. If there are, move them to the desktop (or out of that folder) and then try running Safari 3.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Installed it fine on XP laptop, no need for a restart.

Not quite the same on the mac though. Had to restart, it's slower than 2.0 and it looks exactly the same. So much for things looking consistant.

works good in windows(at work) but seems to need to 2 trys to make a lot of things work. like this post for instance. thats beta for ya i guess

The dmg comes with an uninstaller, don't know whether it restores the previous version, but I'd imagine so.

Edit: Just checked it out, yes it does.

For me Safari 3 hasn't gone down once. I'm loving all the new features and yes, it is quicker.

I do have fairly new hardware though (a 1 year old MacBook CoreDuo)

I meant a toolbar button. I know there's a keyboard shortcut or a file menu option, but every other browser that works with tabs has tab button in the toolbar.

I use SafariStand, and just found that I had one because of an option in that.

When its compatible with Safari 3, you can have your button :)

I don't even like Safari on my Mac; there were too many sites that didn't load properly.

I really can't see anyone outside the Mac community using this. Sure, if you like Safari on your Mac they you will probably like it on your PC. But I can't see too many Windows users switching to this browser.

I had problems installing the Beta too. I had to put safari back into the applications folder to get it too install.
