It's all about iPhone

For those of you wondering why they are releasing Safari for Windows. I saw (here on Mac rumors) a list of features for the iPhone. One of them was to automatically synch bookmarks. I wondered how they were going to do that for Windows and now I think we know.

So, uh, besides the tab and find thing, what's new in Safari 3? I'm using it right now and don't notice much.

I think I'll go back to using Firefox. Adblock FTW

Nope. I think it will be easy enough for Apple to make the iPhone sync with IE and Firefox. There is no way they are planning on converting all iPhone users to Safari on Windows.

There is nothing special, only the Find feature is cool.

The last thing Windows needs is another Internet application. I can't imagine this catching on with people who only use Windows PeeCees. I hope I am wrong though.

After installing Safari 3 on my MacBook Pro C2D, I launched iTunes and it said "iTunes needs a music library." so I had to click browse to locate my iTunes Music Library file before iTunes would fully launch.

Strange.

The close alert is potentially huge. Won't come up much, but when it does, it could be a big help.

Oh, it IS huge. I overshoot the Back button all the time.

But I'm going to stick it out until October, I can't be bothered with stability issues.

Well if it is as fast as they say, when compared to IE7, then i think it will catch on. However the point is for brand awareness and familiarity with the iPhone as well. Possibly also helps windows developers develop applications for the iPhone.

I forgot to mention that the warning now about closing windows is cool too. I sometimes close my Safari window on accident and it frustrates me.

Installed. Well, it's not a dramatic change, is it? But the previous version had some problems with a couple of websites I visit often, but this one works fine, just like the latest webkit nightly. nice

Much faster than Firefox on G5 dual but...

Much faster than Firefox on G5 dual but...

...WOT STILL NO CHAT IN GMAIL?

Can't believe one of the only reasons I use Firefox is because Safari doesn't support the built in Gmail chat, AND IT STILL DOESN'T?

huh

If it wasn't for that, I'd switch over - I switched away from Safari simply because it sucked at most web 2 stuff

So, after using Safari 3 for the past few hours in XP, I still have only one real issue beyond the UI design. Although it doesn't use as much memory for me as some people have shown in this thread, it doesn't seem to release memory after using it. For instance, after viewing the Digg page about Safari on Windows, Safari is using 94MB. This never down, only up as I view more pages.

However, it still seems much faster than other browsers. It displays that Digg page in seven seconds, compared to 15 for IE7 and over a minute for Opera and Firefox (incidentally, it's 30 seconds in FF for Linux, but I want to use the same machine for testing this) That's after emptying the Safari cache and history - so unless it's cheating, it's really does have a fast javascript engine.

YAhoo chat ---

Okay - now when I chat in Yahoo (true yahoo messenger) every time I get a new message at the bottom of the chat window - the window scrolls to the very top... so I can't see the new text without scrolling to the bottom and the only thing I did was install this beta...

It is quicker, but I think I have to uninstall and see if that reverses

i was expecting great things out of the **3.0** beta release...

...but when i installed and used it, i feel like this should be called the safari 2.41 release or something.

everything is running fine and normally, but i was hoping for more changes than just an enhanced 'find' and moveable tabs. like others have said, FF offers so many other features and i was hoping safari would have adopted more of them.

my two biggest disappointments: google / gmail chat and yahoo mail beta both don't work in safari. i like using safari and hate having to use multiple browsers for different functions.

i guess still keeping my fingers crossed for more improvements with the actual release of leopard.........

Converting all Windows users? No. But I still think that crazedbytheheat is on the right track. This is about the iPhone. PC people will be buying and using the phone and spending time with Safari. Making it available for their computers, too, removes one of the big seams that they would have seen while using the phone and IE, etc. Now their iPhone experience can exist in a clean, seamless Apple universe -- which potentially smooths the path for further things Apple in their lives.

That, at least, is the only rationale I can see for this move.

With four tabs running in FF and letting Safari simply idle where it opens on apple.com, memory usage looks like this - 43k for FF, 74k for Safari.

Admittedly, Safari renders pages much faster than FF, but I can't bring myself to sacrifice that much RAM.

*Note* - This is on a WinXP 2.2GHz Dell w/ 384 MB of RAM. The G4 test is next, although from the comments above, I don't expect the same memory problems.

ok as no one else seems to have posted it. I managed to get my safari working by following a post on apple discussion boards.

On XP (assume vista is the same)

go to C:\program files\safari
find folder called safari.resources
copy fonts in folder to C:\windows\fonts
go back to safari folder and rename safari.resources to something else.
start safari
ignore the error
go back to safari folder and put original name on safari.resources folder
try safari again.

This worked for me.

As a side note. According to the info in safari it appears to be based on netscape, which is either the predecessor of firefox or based on firefox :)
Anyone know how to tweak the render settings like in firefox

Didn't work for me. (Vista)

ME too!!! im on my mac so idk why its not working!! i have 20gb of space left and it wont let me!!!

this may help I turned on my external hard drive where i have my imac hard drive backup on and dragged in safari app it asked to replace and then it allowed me to install safari 3 keep your external on during this whole process:eek:  :) :)

Urgh, argh, and whatnot! The right-clicking on the taskbar (or double-clicking its taskbar entry) doesn't minimize it. Clicking its icon in the taskbar unmaximizes the program. And it's just as bad as Safari 2 in rendering horribly over-styled CSS sites (ala MySpace). Scroll-to-here doesn't work, and the highlight color doesn't use what's set in Windows. That's all beta stuff though, stability wise I've had no problems on Windows or OS X.

And is it just me or does the Windows version have an extra option in the Preferences... (an ability to set the default Search engine).
