Wow, there's a huge difference with different installs. My Safari RAM usage maxed out at 94MB and it's now 75MB. It really does fly on my work XP machine (P4, 3.6GHz, HT enabled, 2GB RAM) What websites are you viewing?

Edit: FF has always been a resource hog on any Windows PC I've used. It's reached 300MB on many occasions.

I do think apple will resolve the crash issue in final release, but I don't expect apple to make it into a real windows native app, which means the app speed will always be less than normal.and resource hog

Stuff that sucks already

1. My Windows Taskbar will not pop up when Safari is maximized.

2. Entire address is not selected on the first click like in FF & IE.

3. Resizing is choppy and looks terrible.

4. Can only resize from the right-corner.

5. All of the text looks like it is bold.

6. NO ADBLOCK.

the list continues...

This is in Windows XP, seems like Vista users are having the real problems...

Apple is making jokes now
this is first time I ever saw anybody claim opera's HTML rendering speed is slowest among IE/FX/KHTML, under windows, even firefox users have to admit opera is fastest.

where the hell does apple pull the data? why they all sounds so suspicious?

Running Safari on Vista Ultimate.

So far, so good. One minor niggle is that whenever I minimize it it restores to a non-maximized state. Quite annoying!

I'll stick with it for now, but might keep Firefox handy just in case.

Good work overall! :)

As has been said, iPhone development is the main reason this was released.
Brilliant strategy in the meantime though. When this is coupled with iTunes and released as a full version the Netcraft stats for Safari are going to double in just a couple of months, nearly all at the expense of IE. Which of course means more platform agnostic Websites and wider adoption of non-Microsoft technologies by Web developers.

This is a long game Apple and Google are playing, but bit by bit they are chipping away at Microsoft's dominance from either end. It'll be interesting to see where we are in a couple of years time.

I just couldn't figure out why apple could not port safari 3 to windows with webkit core and utilized windows widgets. Reading the feedback here and neowin.net, this app definitely can not be called "beta", I never saw a beta as unstable as this one.

I'm feelin ya man. I've got 9 tabs open, and have almost 550 mb of RAM being eaten up on XP. Safari is still pretty quick, but that is just an absurd amount of resource usage.

Can't type in text input fields (OS X)

When I try to post using Safari 3, typing in the text input field just acts like 'find as you type' and immediately goes to the first instance of the letter I type, rather than entering text in the field. I imagine this must be a leftover feature of Saft or something (which I removed to make 3 even run). Is there a way I can reverse this?

Sorry if I missed this somewhere, but can anyone comfirm to what extent (if any) Safari 3 leaks memory?

I love Safari but refuse to use it because of the maintenance required to keep it from using just about all of your memory over time.

I concur.

Good news though: looks like Safari 3 has fixed the memory leaking.
Once SIMBL/Pithhelmet is updated I'll be happy as a pig in $h1t :D

On Vista, Safari 3 does not conform to the Aero UI. Resizing looks awful.
However I'll stick with it, it's a beta after all. I assume they've put development effort into XP compatibility and done the bare essentials for Vista.

I'm a Mac user, but sorry Apple, I'm not switching from Firefox. The only thing I dislike about Firefox is that it's not as Apple-like as Safari, but it beats any other browser feature-wise, and I don't use extensions. I mean, just the tab managing still needs a lot of work in Safari, it's not ready just by adding a drag feature, what about an "OPEN NEW TAB" button? Is that ever going to be added?

I also love how a blue glow appears in Firefox if you open a new tab when the tab bar is full, and how new windows open in new tabs instead. I know some of those features are available in Safari add-ons, but I have all these stuff in Firefox without any extensions. Besides, Firefox 3 should be a lot more Mac-like, and it will be released around the same time as Leopard.

Once a Firefoxer, always a Firefoxer. Unless Apple manages to top Firefox in features by October.

Enabling the Debug Menu in Safari for Windows

...enable Debug in Safari.

In Terminal, type:
Code:
defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1

That's OS X of course. I'm trying to find a way of enabling it in Windows.
To enable the Debug Menu in windows (with Safari Closed):
  1. Open C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Apple Computer\Safari\Preferences.plist
  2. Add the following:
    Code:
    <key>IncludeDebugMenu</key>
    <true/>

I haven't seen any differences; cosmetic, performance-wise, preferences or anything from V2 to V3 beta. I guess most of the new stuff will be in Leopard only...

1. Try an Apple-F find in a web page: Much better IMO
2. You can re-arrange tabs on the tab bar with drag and drop
3. Drag a tab away from the tab bar to open the tab in a new window (pretty cool!)

I installed it (OS X) and restarted. Now Safari will not open. I just get the unexpectedly quit pop up every time I try and open Safari

Same here, wouldn't open at all... uninstalled and am now back on 2.0.4

What a waste of time. Whoever it was who said it's now like a real Windows app was spot on.

If we install this, will subsequent updates appear in Apple's software update thing for Wndows?

There is one...

for those of you getting the whole "disk does not meet the requirements" error thing when you install S3 on OS X, make sure that your Safari v2 or v1 is in the applications folder. i had moved mine to another folder, but when i moved it back it installed and has been functioning perfectly thus far. much faster than firefox on everything i've tried it on so far.

i also tried it out on XP SP2. worked great, no problems at all there. also faster than firefox on my box.

scrolling feels excellent on OS X as well.

Thank you! That's what I needed to be able to install! :D

I have essentially the same box as you (3.4 Ghz instead of 3.6, same amount of RAM) and Safari is hogging a ridiculous amount of RAM. I wonder why...

Remove any Safari Input Managers that you have installed and it should open.

Well I just installed it on my Dell Dimension 4700 and it runs great! Actually, it's faster than Safari on my iBook! Oh well, I'm happy Apple finally decided to move Safari to Windows. It was only a a matter of time. Gonna install it on my Dimension E521 with Vista later on tonight.

Yes, to get the inspector item on right click, you need to enable Debug in Safari.

In Terminal, type:
Code:
defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1

That's OS X of course. I'm trying to find a way of enabling it in Windows.

Edit: the Safari look in Windows is beginning to grow on me. Those of you who don't like it, give it a chance.

You can turn on the Debug Menu item on Windows by editing your Application Data\Apple Computer\Safari\Preferences.plist file and adding the lines:
Code:
<key>IncludeDebugMenu</key>
<true/>

This does not enable the funky inspector overlay though.

Edit: sorry, mknapp got there first ...

Safari on XP

I am using Safari on XP business at work and here is what I have noticed. First, it installed with no problems whatsoever. It is stable for me at this point with no crashes. Okay, this ends my good information.

The Bad.
Pages load much slower than what they do on Firefox. Not sure how it loads pages faster than other browsers (accoding to Apple) but it hasn't been my experience in the past couple of hours. (yes, I should be doing more work but what fun would that be?) There have been numerous instances where Safari obviously has problems loading information from external css files. I have seen formatting screwed up on many websites after their painfully long load times. It's a beta so I won't be totally harsh until it is out of beta and if it still has these problems then there are some serious issues.

Hopefully Safari on the iPhone will not have these issues.

On a side note...People who claim that we Apple people will never say anything bad about an Apple product should really read these boards to understand that we don't follow blindly. We simply follow what we know is quality. Unfortunately for Apple, Safari for Windows is not of good quality... yet.

Actually, it seems to me that Apple fans are actually much more vicious towards Apple than any other group, perhaps including Windows fans.
