For the verge to say the display is 'ok' and not that noticeable except coming from X, isn't too inspiring imo.

Who the hell wants to read or watch a screen at that angle? #fakenews #peoplejustwanttocomplainfornoreason

Wouldn’t reading content with the phone laying flat on the table be a use case where you don’t have direct line of sight?

People don’t do this at restaurants / offices / coffee shops?

...This is now a fringe use case?

Theoretically, yes. Though personally I don't do this either. If I'm looking at the phone, it's in my hands - or in my car, on a mount that's angled towards my face.

But, ok, let's say it's a major use case for a particular customer. I agree that tint shift (or any off-angle viewing issue) would certainly be a concern to that individual. However, reading this thread, it sounds like a lot of people are completely writing off the XR based solely on this single review/gif, damning the screen as garbage and basically unusable. That's ridiculous. Have their been other reports of the problem?

None of us (aside from a handful of reviewers) has ever laid eyes on this display. Anyone who would otherwise be interested in the XR owes it to themselves to check out the device in person. The Verge might be in possession of a single bad display, or that specific angle is weird (and wouldn't impact most people in typical usage), or maybe it's simply less severe in person (perhaps the video accentuates the issue).

Or, yeah, this could truly be a serious concern for all XRs, and is indeed a reason to write it off. I'll wait to make that judgment for myself. Not going to make that call based strictly on a 5-second gif.

One review had a guy introduce an iPhone 8 and 8 plus and it also did the tint shift because...

it's an LCD.

THEY ALL DO IT.

I frequently watch videos with my phone on a stand that places it at a shallow angle. If I don’t have the stand I use a napkin to prop it up that results in an even shallower angle.

I can’t detect tiny shift on my 6s. Guess I’ll be keeping it for a while.

If it does the same way that the 8’s do, then all is good (but the given picture says it is worse).

why does it matter how it looks like off axis? i mean, it's off-axis; look straight at it
Laying flat on a table, and the quick shifts left and right when swiping one handed with your thumb.

Never challenge the forum.

If they say you're wrong, you're wrong. Because they're right, which overrules all other viewpoints, because they're wrong. And they're right.

Some of us will know soon enough by tomorrow. The angle the verge is showing is pretty extreme and I think will be a non issue.

It's hilarious how desperately you want this to be an issue.
My favorite part was about sharing the phone screen like it’s your friends over for a game. I laughed pretty hard at thiis, it’s stupid. My IPad sucks off axis. People make a mountain out of an ant hill.

Side splitting or tear inducing?

Is amusing you care. Care enough to visit this thread and comment. Not a concern for you, then why come?

You've seen the Verge video review? You can see the colour shift and diming as he turns display? And the display is lower than 1080p. Both of these factors are not present in the 7+ or 8+ and the XR has a larger display and is newer. Oops sorry, I'm holding it wrong!
So, I'm assuming you will not be getting an XR?

OLED turns blue, LCD goes darker at an angle.

Who cares?

People who care..

I hate the blue shifting in XS. I think going a bit darker wouldn't annoy me as much but I guess I will know for sure tomorrow.

The fact however that this is worse than 8+ is not something to brag about.

it seems to me that he's been tilting the XR much more than the 8 plus
The 8 is also closer to the camera. Both exhibit the same issue (I used a co-workers 8 Plus today and it does it). So do my iPad Pro and MBP Retina. It's normal and you only really notice it if you use your device incorrectly.

It's a discussion forum. Amazing people still need that explained.

Ended up buying the XS based on that GIF. Maybe I'll pick up the 8 plus at some point if I can't live with the -shift.
