He predicted the 15-inch butterfly would be discontinued and would get a scissor refresh in 2020.
The 15" screen size MacBook Pro is discontinued, done, gone. If Apple were planning to release a new one in 2020 it'd have remained in the lineup with the older Butterfly keyboard, along with the 13" MacBook Pro.

I love the form factor of the 13” MBP, but the awful GPU performance has always held me back. Any chance of significant improvement in 2020?

I just ordered a 2019 MCP a couple weeks ago.

if they are going to release a 14” MCP with this new keyboard that everyone is raving about then sign me up.

remember lads - Best Buy gets stock first. Make sure your rewards cards are cleaned out !

So excited! I hope it shares the 16" property of costing thousands of dollars less than the old model making the highest capacities reasonable.

Why? Because Apple enjoys replacing entire 15-inch top-cases?

I have no idea - if they upgraded to a new Intel CPU, that might have a better integrated GPU in it, but in the case of the 16", they kept the old CPU. Who can say for sure?

Do people really expect Apple to force consumers to choose between a 13" and 16" for the next few years? We're obviously not going to see a 14" any time soon.
You don't know that for sure. In 2020, it could end up something like this: 13.3" (Air), 14" (Pro), 16" (Pro). I hope it does, as this lineup offers choice and differentiation between the models.

No rumors have specifically pointed to a 14" Pro, but it does still remain a possibility. Worst case is we get a 13.3" Pro with the scissor keyboard, and that would be a bit of a disappointment IMHO. But I will reiterate that the 15" is gone for good.

No surprise Apple is keeping the 13". Kuo's also predicting the return of 15" with scissor.

It makes the MacBook Pro lineup more complete.
If Apple was going to update the 15" MBP with the scissor keyboard later on, they would have still kept it in the lineup. Besides, Apple has stated that the 16" MBP is a replacement for the 15" so I'll bet money we don't see the 15" anymore. Kuo is not always right.

Having to re-engineer the whole lineup for the keyboard would be a good opportunity to rationalise the lineup:

13" MBA - largely as-is
15" MBA - innards of the current 15W (13") MBP

14" MBP - beefed up a bit with a dGPU, retains 28W CPU and offers the 6 core version!
16" MBP - already in place
That's not bad actually. I could be wrong but I think Apple is moving in the direction of 1 mainstream product size and 2 pro product sizes, at least with iPad & Mac laptop lineup. So I could also see the following;

14" Retina MBA
14" MBP
16" MBP

Bingo!

I'm shopping right now to replace my base spec 2015 13" MBA. I can hold off buying something for a few months to see if this rumor pans out.

In the market to replace a SurfaceBook, and at this point I'm more than willing to go to MacBook Pro if the hardware issues go away so I can lose the continual MS software debacles. Only really need a Windoze for gaming.

I'm just going to buy a ThinkPad X395, AMD-based, 12" form factor but a 13.3" screen. Only 16GB RAM though, but at least Lenovo hasn't disappointed me on a consistent basis like Apple has for the past 5 years.

If I keep waiting for Apple to release a good quality computer that is reasonably priced, or allows me to do my own upgrades, I'd be able to claim being a victim of Stockholm syndrome.

Desires for the MBP:
  1. Physical function keys with the option to have the stupid POS touch bar for those fanatics who say "why do you need physical function keys". They can even charge more for that "privilege" to put the fanatics in line.
  2. Removable storage, so if the board craps out I don't lose all my data.
  3. I would like non-soldered RAM so I can cheaply upgrade my RAM, however the new memory prices are more...... fairly priced but still too expensive.
  4. SD Card Slot
  5. USB 3.1 ports in addition to USB C, even if only two and two.
I make enough money to waste it on the new MBP 16" and pay for a top of the line version, but just because I make that money doesn't mean I'm stupid enough to mindlessly throw it away, unlike lots of people here that say "Then don't buy it if it's too much." Those people should re-evaluate why they are so miserable.

I'd like to see a new 12" notebook. MBA, MBP or even bring back the MB. My 2015 12" is getting old but I still love it. There's nothing better when packing light.

I would wager that's not the CPU Apple will use for the 13" (or 14") MBP update in 2020. Besides Comet Lake, suitable 15W/28W Ice Lake parts are also available now, which *do* include the *much* improved Gen11 graphics, and some other perks that Comet lake does not have such as AVX-512 and better efficiency. These Ice Lake chips are targeted at high-end/premium portables, while Comet Lake is targeted at the mid-range. At the very least I expect Ice Lake will be an upgrade/BTO option for the top-spec model, but from a hardware and manufacturing point of view it's probably not attractive for Apple to have Comet Lake for the entry-level spec and Ice Lake for the top-spec, so I would be surprised if they wouldn't just use Ice Lake across the entire 2020 range.

That's bollocks, the first Ice Lake devices that are becoming available show solid performance increase despite the lower clock rates, by virtue of being able to maintain turbo clocks for longer. See [1], which doesn't even use the highest-spec 28W part. Low yields should be a temporary problem, and likely the main reason Apple did not upgrade the 13" already in 2019.

“Low yields will be a temporary problem”- ROFLMAO...10nm is a dumpster fire and has been since its inception. Apple upgraded the 13” in 2019 with 8th Generation 15w and 28w U-Series CPUs and while the 28w was a 100MHz whiffle ball, the 15w update with Iris Plus 645 obviated any need for Apple to waste time with Ice Lake this year.

Intel is going to limp along with 14nm+++ad infinitum refinements using Comet Lake and whatever Lakes they still have left, while they string us along for as long as possible until they can get 7nm online. If they can get it online.

See this article - https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/intel-10nm-ice-lake-test-benchmarks,6257.html - it looks as though they basically punted on making any unkind declarations towards Ice Lake at the end of the article. For sure, GEN 11 GPUs are where the majority of improvements are along with things exclusive to Ice Lake that aren’t being backported to any Coffee Lake, CFL-R ad nauseum updates because that’s about the only way to get people excited about Ice Lake. I’m sure that a small percentage of my knowledge has already shifted as Intel’s messaging on what Comet Lake or Tiger Lake will get in terms of refinements keeps shifting while some poor clown in Intel PR touches base with the fabs to see how good or bad production yields are since Intel refused to thrown in the towel on 10nm. At the same time, AMD is eating Intel’s lunch on 65w-110w TDP CPUs and even higher end than CPUs.

Battery gains are as much to do with Intel FINALLY including an LPDDR4/x DRAM controller along with some of the obvious process improvements with 10nm and IPC gains. One wonders how much this would have helped 14nm had Intel not tied the use of LPDDR4 to Cannon Lake/Ice Lake.

I expect Apple to take a wait and see attitude with respect to Ice Lake or to completely skip it as Intel has proven that they cannot admit they’ve bungled 10nm worse than Broadwell, which I did not think was humanly possible. Until now.

An 11" ipad pro would be ideal for me if it had a file manager and could connect to external drives.
Are you still living in 2018 or something?

Because it's not physically possible.

There's this myth the 16-inch display fits into the 15-inch chassis. It doesn't. The 16-inch chassis is bigger in every dimension.

The horizontal bezels have been decreased from 0.33" to 0.25" but there's still plenty left. Vertical bezels are virtually the same.
i was speaking about a similar solution...
Roughly the same dimensions.
Just like they did with MacBook Pro 16".

It does have some sort of file manager, and they recently allowed more devices to connect but i'm not sure if that includes drives.

Give Lenovo 5 years, see how much disappointment comes your way. Hopefully not and you can enjoy yourself while the rest of us fanatics fondly say, “Remember that old crank, the Snail?” “Who?” “Never mind, he moved to Lenovo years ago and it was sort of therapeutic for him!” Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
