The normal 13’s are still great phones. Good oled panels, a15! just inferior. if 7000 aluminium is better than SS, then why is the cheaper phone not using it? and the pro using 7k series aluminium? Because it isn’t better at all.

Because “marketing”. Apple are rather good at it. And ultimately, it’s easier to shine up. That’s probably the real reason it’s used.

Stainless is better at resisting corrosion mainly, not something a phone ever suffers from. Steel is harder, so it’s more resistant to dents, however the stainless Apple use is not of a very high strength, if they used the best stainless then it would be a different story. The coating is also a lot less durable than the aluminium frame coating.

7000 grade aluminium includes magnesium and copper to increase its strength and is used in the aviation industry. It’s the highest strength of any aluminium. Do you think they would make planes out of it if stainless was better?

Aluminium also costs more than stainless.
(The two types that are used by Apple)

Nobody has ever returned an iPhone because it’s too light, but many have because they are too heavy. If all specs were equal I would suspect people would opt for the lighter aluminium model over stainless.

buy whatever makes you happy. Regarding which one is 'better', if both are priced identical, which one would you choose? That one would be the 'better' phone. But I can't imagine most would pick regular 13 over pro if they are priced the same. Also how can regular 13 be ‘better’ if it’s missing telephoto, macro and 120hz screen? You can argue those not worth extra $200 to you but it’s certainly not ‘better’.

That isn’t true.

No? Can you provide me with the cost differences then please…

The stainless Apple use is Austenitic 316 (AISI 316L) if that helps.
Not just marketing. The primary reason is cost as aluminum is much cheaper to manufacture, so Apple can afford to put that on the cheaper phone.

“The reason why aluminum is preferred over stainless steel by smartphone manufacturers is easy to guess: it is simply cheaper to make a phone's frame and chassis out of it. Aluminum is usually more expensive than steel per unit of weight, but since aluminum is about 2.5 times less dense, a ton of aluminum can theoretically yield about 2.5 times more components than a ton of steel.

On top of that, aluminum is softer, thus easier to machine and turn into actual phone parts – another reason why aluminum is cheaper to use. Below is a video by Apple showing how an iPhone 7 body is made using a CNC machine. Had Apple used stainless steel, the process would have been slower, more difficult, and more expensive.

This isn't the only advantage aluminum has over stainless steel. It is much lighter. It is easier to apply color to. It conducts heat more easily, and phones that run cooler do run more efficiently. But ultimately, the lower cost of using aluminum is the top reason why stainless steel is – and is likely to remain – a metal found only in premium mobile products. “

You’ve quoted phone arena… really?!

I think it’s irrational for someone to think it’s hard to hold a phone.
Not everyone is you so you can be forgiven for that incredibly insensitive remark. No one expects you to understand that many users' hands and bodies don't work like yours. But still…

I owned a 7 Plus for a few years. It was really difficult to frame a shot one-handed but it was possible because I have a huge hand. Ok, technically there are two but only one of them is capable of movement. Anyway, framing one-handed is something that could not be done on the single lens iPhones because of pinch-zoom.

When the Xs offered dual lenses in the smaller form factor, I jumped on it and never looked back (the X wasn't quite ready for prime time IMO) and then the 11 Pro because it fixed an issue with my Toyota (long story). Bottom line: I will never own a Max sized iPhone again.

I really do like the feel of my wife's 13 Mini but there are some camera features only found in the 13 Pro so I went with that—even though I find the smaller size much more comfortable.

If there's a 14 Mini next year and it has the features I like in the 13 Pro, I might downsize again next year. We'll see what happens then.

Dumb question here, I'm sure: This may be a generational thing for me but - am I the only one who doesn't understand the "return" phenomenon? What i mean is: I never return things I have bought. I would if it was faulty, or it didn't fit in my car (like a TV or something), or it turned out I couldn't afford it and had major regret. Do people nowadays buy things primarily to help decide what they will *keep*, and therefore very often end up returning thing? I have had iPhones since the 4. Never once returned a phone.
It depends. Apple gives you 10 days to get it right. When spending that kind of coin, it's a good thing.

For me, ordinarily no. One time, AT&T got my order wrong—of course, that had to go back for exchange. Another time, I was gifted an iPad with not nearly enough storage—they meant well but nobody had asked so no one knew. I quietly returned it and paid the additional $ without letting on.

Apple has been known to extend the return time if the item is a gift.

Yes, that is what I said. I feel sorry for the type of person that thinks an extra ounce makes a phone “harder to deal with.” Give me a break.
People age. Some people have arthritis or other health problems and the extra grams may be a big deal. I don’t have those things but I do prefer lightness. Light to me means comfort.

We’re talking about the average user who shouldn’t have issues with a few extra grams - a couple of quarters. Even then I can’t imagine that pushing it over the edge of usability for these people you speak of.

Also keep in mind we’re not comparing Max phones to mini phones. My comments were specifically referring to the little bit of extra weight between the 13 and 13 Pro, two phones with similar volumes and slight weight differences.

I don’t think you’re understand - I have both and yes the weight is not horribly different. The dimensions are VERY different. Thus, one has to extend a hand further or try to fit the max into an pocket which can be awkward to most. It’s a beast no way around it. A beautiful best, a beast nonetheless.

The dimensions of a 13 and 13 pro are not VERY different. Is that what you are saying, that they are?

….. keep telling yourself that. If they were the same then apple would have one phone! 😂
What are you talking about? Look up the dimensions yourself on Apple’s site. iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro are the same size.

No need to look them up when I have both lol! again, just try fitting one in your pocket and then, the other. Totally different - in every way.

I can’t believe you’re still going on about this. Totally different in every way? As I’ve stated multiple times, the physical size between the 13 and 13 Pro is exactly the same.

Cool. Some people prefer an actual phone vs. a battery pack brick with a tablet screen attached to it.

You’re getting really boring with your antagonistic battery/weight moaning posts. We get it, you don’t like the Pros. Stop bringing it up every other post and enjoy your damn 13.
