2016 Macbook Pro Issue - High Pitched Keyboard Clicking Sound

My left shift key just started doing this! Very annoying!!!! Is there a fix? I really don't want to have to send this to Apple! 🙁

EDIT: Just pressed very hard and firmly into the key with my index finger and it stopped it. Bizarre. Will continue to monitor.

I have a MacBook, and I find the keyboard very hard to use and very loud. The new MBP seems a bit better, but still is very loud and not as good (imo) as the 2015 machine. I'm quite happy with the older MBP -- easy connectivity with USB-A, takes SDHC cards, and has two thunderbolt ports, a very good keyboard, and, as a machine that's been around for several years, no significant hardware issues (such as are reported here).

Inferior screen, inferior CPU, inferior GPU, slower SSD. I'll take my chances with the 2016 model.

It probably won't stop permanently. I can press hard onto mine and it stops temporarily, but it will come back.

I just got my third replacement today. All for that stick keys under heat. Each time, different keys. A diaster

If this doesn't go away I'm going to take it in for service, but this definitely sounds like some kind of manufacturing defect that isn't effecting everyone. Definitely annoying for a laptop that costs this much. I love this keyboard otherwise, though 🙁

@LegolasWang, thanks very much for posting on the thread! Indeed, it's incredibly frustrating. I'm sorry to hear that you've gone through 3 replacements all with the issue. I'm still reading this thread in the hope of hearing that the problem's been fixed on new machines, but it seems like it's ongoing. I've even read a review where the reviewer praises the machine yet complains of the same problem.

Apple must know it's an issue by now. I'm just curious if they plan do rectify it.

It's also possible that Apple feels there is no issue. If the returns are a low # there is no reason for change. Just because some on here are returning doesn't mean it's a high % of returns. However more importantly, many of the returns Apple may not even know why people are returning. It almost takes the issue showing up on some news channel or a major magazine (consumer reports) for Apple to take notice. Why are we not hearing about this issue outside of Macrumors?

It's possible that one of the reasons we're not hearing about it outside of this forum is that the reviewers might not get the machines as warm as someone using them in earnest for their work. It's that, or we all have incredibly low irritability thresholds 🙂

For me, the popping sound on the keys is like nails on a chalk-board, to use a cliche.
 
This isn't fixed by Apple. I received my 15" MBPtb couple of days ago and I have this issue with Caps Lock (I remapped it to Esc) and Delete keys, when the laptop is even slightly warm (~8% CPU on activity monitor!). They get back to normal after I put it to sleep/shutdown and wait for 15-20 min. Not good, Apple.

I'm sorry to hear that. I was hoping they would've begun to churn out machines that don't have that problem.

Will you try for another unit? I'm still loath to jump back in at the moment.

Nope..I'm not going to replace it for the simple reason that there is absolutely no guarantee that the replacement unit won't have the same issue! Also, I think I will just get used to it.. :|

Hello there,
The third replacement for my friend's 13 MBP seems not have the sticky key issues. The manufactured date is Jan 20.

My 15 inch MBP just starts to have sticky number keys after 20days of normal use. It's a maxed out version manufactured on Jan 10. I asked for a replacement today and will post updates when I receive it.


Apple store says it's because of dust. Don't believe them!
 
As a Mac user for 30 years now, I simply can't believe the level of obsession some people have about small, small things.

Returning a MacBook three, four times (or more) because one or two keys sounded "different"? Yipes!

As a guy used to say in the Army (47 years ago for me), "Don't sweat the small sh**!"

Why not celebrate "Keyboard diversity"?
What kind of a world would it be, if every key sounded the same?

Ha, well Apple sort of appeals to those with an OCD streak. Listening to the recordings of the extra clicky keys, they do sound annoying.

I listen to the videos, and can't hear much, if any difference.

I'm sure the keys on my keyboards don't all sound identical.

Acceptable quality is a difficult concept to quantify. How much inconsistency or what level of flaw is acceptable for such an expensive product?

A laptop sold at this price should have a good keyboard that is broadly the same across a reasonable sample of units. The fact that people's experience is so varied (variation in travel, feel and sound of keys on the same machine and across a number of machines, with some machines having a relatively loud squeak from one or more keys) is not indicative of quality. Many much cheaper products have better consistency.

The obvious argument is that people should just buy a different type of machine : Windows or Linux, for example. Unfortunately, many of us have made a significant investment in the Apple ecosystem (apps, linked devices etc.) and a swap to a different OS is not easily accomplished. We just want a reliable and powerful Mac OS laptop.

Please don't think that I'm being snarky. I'm just trying to explain how I feel about it. Some others might agree.
