I don't understand Apple...
They believe in USB-C so much they make it the ONLY port on a MAC PRO machine (not the entry level netbook) yet they refuse to adopt it as the standard in their new iphones.

USB-C only MacBooks have been on the market for 2 years now and I can easily say their users are still running with dongles around... USB-A still dominant...

This is partly due to USB-C not having taken off the way they believed it would. They were very stupid to put all their eggs in the USB-C basket. This was sheer idiocy. They could have made a perfectly futuristic laptop while leaving 1 USB-A, MagSafe, and the SD card slot alongside 2 USB-C ports. But noooo, it's gotta be 1mm thinner and it's gotta be as minimal as possible.

Just a guess, but I think @jObooW was looking for an actual answer, not incredulity. LOL, indeed.

On topic: the 5 watt chargers should be relegated to the past. There's no excuse to continue putting them with product.

I much prefer the 5w charger for my night stand chargers. I like a slow charger for the night and quick chargers for the day when I actually need it. So I will then pull out the 12w iPad charger for the rare occasion.

Cost-saving to pass on to investors. That's ok, I don't need to spend extra money for a quick-charger either and fine with what came with the phone. Besides, I won't be upgrading to a new phone this year.

Is there a dongle to plug in an iPad Pro USB-C into my mid 2012 MBP non retina? I can't seem to find one. Maybe that's why they don't roll USB-C out yet for the iPhone. That would be aweful to buy a new device and no way to sync it on the computer. Maybe via wifi?

There's USB-A to USB-C cables, although Apple doesn't make one.
Apple sells one from Belkin. I can recommend the (much cheaper) fabric one from Anker.

There's also cheap dongles (USB-A male to USB-C female) but those are disallowed by the USB spec.

One of the beautiful things about Apple design, in most cases, is when they make these choices for you. Adding more settings like this just seems like terrible design.
Yeah like changing the way iphone x can be turned off. That was an amazing change.
It's amusing that you actually believe the things you are writing.

Oh and another great change
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/iphone-x-accidental-screenshots.2088104/

It's likely a tiny niche of users who understand charge rates and know when they need to use a faster rate of charge.
I don't see what's so difficult to understand.

Moving up from 5W to maybe 7.5W or 10W wouldn't be bad. But going into much faster chargers in the box would be a waste. Those who need it likely already have faster means of charging.
And throwing money to buy a true fast charger is not a waste. You're funny.

Disagree...the vast majority of people likely have no idea how many watts their charger is and charge it night, making it irrelevant.

If you’re a person that wants it, buy a more robust charger. Makes no sense to put a high powered charger in 200M boxes if only a small percentage care.

Apple knows this to be the case or it would be different.

Basically what you're saying is that Apple is right to provide a sub-par product because the customers are too dumb to know better. So why waste the money?

I'm sorry, but this is the most blind devotion to Apple I've ever seen. You'd rather see them add another dollar to their hundreds of billions than be given the same charger that every other manufacturer provides. I'm glad you like Apple so much.

You understand your jumping to conclusions based on a rumour right ? Wait for factual evidence before you get on a hissy fit please. There is enough of that nonsense going on.

Agreed. It is all too popular to bash Apple and think that we know more than a company that makes billions every year. The first 2-3 pages of this thread are full of this.

I'd gladly tell Apple to keep the headphones and charger+cable because I have too many already, even if it didn't save me any $.

Hopefully an empty rumors, but if not...

They brag about being environmentally friendly, but the number of practically useless 5w chargers that are never even taken out of the box (all for the sake of saving a few pennies) is fairly egregious in 2019.

Have to agree here. My house used to be littered with them. I can't even give them away. I went out of my way to buy multi-port Anker chargers for my family/friends so these things are useless for those around me and my family.

I go to the airport and see people freaking out trying to charge their iPhones with the 5w adapter before a long flight ... makes me cry a little inside. That said, that 5w adapter fits VERY well next to a ton of other, usually over sized adapters, but I've never taken one on a trip.

I have a 6 port Anker hub at home, 5 port + USB C Anker hub at work, and 2 port Anker chargers littered throughout the house. I have 3 Anker batteries (20,000 mAh) that I usually take with me on work trips (I just take one of them) so I don't have to fight for outlets.

Wireless Anker chargers at work/home - where my phone spends most of its life. iPad uses the multi-port Ankers.

--------------------

I'm keeping my Xs Max for at least 2-3 years. Next phone must have USB C. Could care less what charger is included with the phone. I have used my Anker chargers for many years and will continue to do so.

You preferring them for your night stand still isn't an excuse. Liking a slow(er) charge at night still makes little sense. Your phone would still be completely charged before you wake and the iPhone would account for that and stop charging at some point. Just as it would account for it with a faster charger and stop charging... just quicker. It's not like a 5W charger provides a trickle charge.

Indeed makes no real sense.

nice try, who should houl - if we ALL HERE want usb-c

My Samsung Galaxy S9+ has USB-C. While it is a sigficant improvement over micro-USB, I prefer lightning.

USB-C is cumbersome to plug into a phone and I suspect it would be more cumbersome to plug into smaller devices like AirPods or BeatsX.

Even wireless charging is just a gimmick and I hardly know anyone who actually uses it regularly.

I use wireless charging daily, I use one that is on my night stand at home and also I have one on my desk at the office. I rarely use a plug in charger.

Odd seeing people saying ‘ok wait another year’ over such a minor part of the phone. Surely there might be other features that would sway you? Might find the hype over whatever is on the 2019 phones has greater pull than the horrors of a port you don’t like.

The unpopular can stay unpopular. 5W was for when iPhone has 1,400ish mAh.

2G -> 1,400
3G -> 1,150
3GS -> 1,220
4 -> 1,420
4S -> 1,430
5 -> 1,440
5S -> 1,560
5C -> 1,510
SE -> 1,624
6 -> 1,810 ......6+ -> 2,915
6S -> 1,715 ....6S+ -> 2,750
7 -> 1,960 ......7+ -> 2,900
8 -> 1,821 ......8+ -> 2,691
X -> 2,716
XS -> 2,658 ....XS Max -> 3,174
XR -> 2,942

I do agree with this. Going up toward 10W would be ideal.

auto brightness: off or on. That’s complex?
On iOS 12 it definitely is(taking in consideration how many tutorials there are online regarding this setting).
Settings/General/Accessibility/ Display Accommodations/Auto-brightness(on/off)
vs Android
Settings/Display/Auto-brightness(on/off)
There are also tutorials on how to turn off the iphone x. Amusing.

And, if this rumor turns out to be true, the 2019 iPhones will continue to not sell well... just like the 2018 models.

The people at Apple can’t possibly be THAT stupid.

This will literally have zero impact on how well iPhones sell.

Wait, since when do 2018 models not sell well?
Are you talking about China, where every smartphone manufacturer has been facing strong headwinds the past quarter?

That makes no sense at all. It's a charger. It's not like it's a critical, hard to source, hard to manufacture component. Fast chargers are a "dime a dozen" from multiple OEM's with volumes commensurate with Apple's. At best that would have been an okay excuse back around the iP7 era. Again, it's a fast charger, not a triple lens-front facing- AI enabled- infra-red-telescopic selfie cam.
I agree with you. It would take longer to put an iPhone together than a charger.

Unpopular opinion: most people are charging devices overnight, and 5W is more than sufficient for these use cases. Also, long term slower charges are better for battery health.
Most people charge over night because they know how long it takes to charge with a 5w charger. Give those people the choice of waking up and plugging in their phones to charge while they get dressed and have it above 80% by time they are done; I bet a lot would choose this option.

Put me in the minority, I don’t care about a fast charger. When I need to charge my phone, I simply plug it in and leave it for an extended amount of time without having to worry about how ‘quickly’ it can charge. If I want to invest my money in a fast charger, I will gladly purchase one, and something for more ‘convenience’, then that would be a wireless charger of some sort for my needs.

It's amusing that you actually believe the things you are writing.

That power off function for the newer iPhones is odd. Don’t think that was done well. Amusing though that you’re reaching for such random arguments.

I don't see what's so difficult to understand.

Nothing difficult to understand. For battery health, longevity and how 99% of users understand and charge their iPhones, a simple charger for overnight charging is sufficient. Though I do think 5W is on the low end. But something like a 20-30W charger would be overkill.

And throwing money to buy a true fast charger is not a waste. You're funny.

What’s funny is your inability to see outside of the MR niche bubble for what benefits the majority of users.

Don’t forget to inform them of the impact to battery health when fast charging every single day.

While it was recently reported that Apple has at least considered switching to USB-C on the iPhone, Japanese blog Mac Otakara believes that 2019 models will stick with the Lightning connector as a cost-saving measure.

Based on its conversations with various accessory manufacturers, the blog also predicts that 2019 iPhones will continue to be bundled with the same old 5W power adapter, forcing customers to spend extra on a faster charger like the 18W USB-C version that ships with the latest iPad Pro models.

Likewise, the blog predicts that 2019 iPhones will continue to ship with a Lightning to USB-A cable and Lightning-based EarPods.

I sure hope so. Lightning >USB-C

I guess you may be retired and / or don't go out much.

Not al all my example perfectly illustrates how your excuses make no sense at all. You premise is simply wrong.

2019 might be the smallest iPhone improvement anyways. I’ll skip the upgrade. Plus, if iOS 13 isn’t good, I’ll sell off my iPhone and probably move over to OnePlus or Google.
