I hope these renders do not accurately portray the design of the integration of the cameras. Jobs would have never allowed something looking like this to hit the market.
I'm not really that big of a fan of Steve Jobs but I completely agree with you.
What drew me to the iPhone at the time of the iPhone 5S was its meticulously crafted design. There wasn't a detail that was out of place. Those phones really seemed made out of a single block and the materials were stellar.
Today, for me as a potential customer, there are two problems: the materials are still very good (even if the polished mirror steel finish is a scratch magnet, a problem we don't have with aluminum) but the competition definitely caught up, and the aesthetic refinement has gone down the drain.
First it was camera bumps and antenna lines, now it is camera bumps and the notch. I love my 8 Plus but the lenses on the back feels like they didn't know where to slap them and decided to just put them there. The vertical lenses on the X and Xs look better, but those phones have the notch, which is a dubious solution, especially with that size.
It all goes down, however to personal taste, so what I dislike might be extremely beautiful for another person. I miss the squared design of the iPhone 5S and SE, but I'm a sucker for big displays so I'll hang on to my 8 Plus as long as I can.
What I find disappointing is how the compromises Apple is making on design are not on the same level as those made by other manufacturers or even by themselves on other product lines.
On one hand they seem to be willing to sacrifice function over form (read the MacBook Pro's keyboard, which on my unit by the way works really well), on the other they are obviously sacrificing design for the sake of offering a third camera on the next iPhone.
They have to stay relevant in the camera specs, I understand that, but I'm of the opinion that a square and asymmetric camera bump is one of the ugliest things they could have come up with. I understand not putting them on the center because Samsung already does that and Apple has always had lenses on the corner, but this is just plainly ugly.
People are gonna buy it anyway and I respect it, I will keep my 8 Plus and taking high quality pictures with my D850.
