It could be worse...

(This is not a ps job, it’s an actual device.)

As for the triple lens thing.. I like it! Not every device has to be for everyone, if they’re really emphasising the camera spec on this model it makes sense that it (maybe) looks very camera-ish!

I had to check and make sure this wasn't just an April Fool's joke! That thing is INSANE.

But the new square bumps... they're still nasty-looking for a company that ostensibly prides itself on a ultra-cool, ultra-modern aesthetic. This is definitely a step backward.

Are they seriously going with this design? It doesn't look like an Apple product. I'm not going to count it out yet but something looks off.

I remember when the iPhone 4 was found in the bar and everyone saying it has to be a prototype, that Jobs would never approve it, it was hideous, etc. Soon, it was considered one of the most beautiful phones ever made. I think the continuous glass case likely will beautifully integrate the cameras.

Olloclips are going to start looking like this... lol
But if the camera changes are substantial (other than just adding another lens), it might be worth the upgrade. Last year’s XS was not even an upgrade, and it was the first iPhone I didn’t upgrade to since the iPhone 5. Apple needs to consider lowering their starting prices for these phones, otherwise they are going to lose more sales in the coming year like they did this past year... they cannibalized some of the XS sales with the Xr. Weird that so many people want to pay what they were for the flagship with the middle storage capacity option from 3 years ago...

I’m liking the xr redesign. Not enough to buy it yet, maybe in 2020-2021 but I like the colors lol. Screw high end specs I want those colors!!!

I can’t say that I’m a fan of the three camera design. But, if the third lens really makes a difference in photos maybe I’ll upgrade my X this year. ‍

So true. That notch is horrible. It's put me off latest iPhones and I went with iPhone 8 Plus ( The Last iPhone which was also a productivity tool as well) . I just can't stand having a chunk out of my display and they've tried to convince everyone its a thing of beauty. It's not. They could've put R&D into making a finger print scanner under the display that is as good as the Touch ID button and make the display truly edge to edge. And this triple camera setup as well? Jobs would never have let any of this pass. He would have pushed them to find a better way.

Preach it. I’m tired of Apple trying to push a smartphone as a productivity device. No one cares about health or news. We want games, no camera bump. It’s about presence. I want to show off I got the best, even if all I do is watch YouTube and take pictures of food.

Makes you think. IBM was right. Who wants a PC? No one is gonna use a PC to be creative or productive. It’s about content consumption. Samsung gets it. That’s why they don’t need an OS or app suite. They got da bling so they be da king.

I hope these renders do not accurately portray the design of the integration of the cameras. Jobs would have never allowed something looking like this to hit the market.

I'm not really that big of a fan of Steve Jobs but I completely agree with you.

What drew me to the iPhone at the time of the iPhone 5S was its meticulously crafted design. There wasn't a detail that was out of place. Those phones really seemed made out of a single block and the materials were stellar.

Today, for me as a potential customer, there are two problems: the materials are still very good (even if the polished mirror steel finish is a scratch magnet, a problem we don't have with aluminum) but the competition definitely caught up, and the aesthetic refinement has gone down the drain.

First it was camera bumps and antenna lines, now it is camera bumps and the notch. I love my 8 Plus but the lenses on the back feels like they didn't know where to slap them and decided to just put them there. The vertical lenses on the X and Xs look better, but those phones have the notch, which is a dubious solution, especially with that size.

It all goes down, however to personal taste, so what I dislike might be extremely beautiful for another person. I miss the squared design of the iPhone 5S and SE, but I'm a sucker for big displays so I'll hang on to my 8 Plus as long as I can.

What I find disappointing is how the compromises Apple is making on design are not on the same level as those made by other manufacturers or even by themselves on other product lines.

On one hand they seem to be willing to sacrifice function over form (read the MacBook Pro's keyboard, which on my unit by the way works really well), on the other they are obviously sacrificing design for the sake of offering a third camera on the next iPhone.

They have to stay relevant in the camera specs, I understand that, but I'm of the opinion that a square and asymmetric camera bump is one of the ugliest things they could have come up with. I understand not putting them on the center because Samsung already does that and Apple has always had lenses on the corner, but this is just plainly ugly.

People are gonna buy it anyway and I respect it, I will keep my 8 Plus and taking high quality pictures with my D850.

Wow, I hope it won't look that butt fugly when it comes out. I'm wondering if they will make the flat sides like the iPhone SE or new iPad Pros.

Two areas ripe for improvement in the smartphone world. One of them is earlier than the other. Battery life is difficult to increase without a bigger battery, today. Camera capabilities and quality are ripe for improvement that is the current turf war. Unless you carry your d850 every place you take your cell phone, the old adage “the best camera is the one you have with you”, applies.

Very soon the cases will not be able to put anything on the back...it'll be one large hole for the cameras...lol

Nope. That design change will be reserved for 2020 as Apple are on three year cycle.

Just no.

You are right in the fact that the iPhone and the D850 are not meant to be interchangeable. Especially not the D850, which has the weight of a baby hippo and the bulk to match.

My way of phrasing this in the post above was terrible, but what I meant to say is that I don't really need an improvement in the phone's camera performance because for high resolution and low light work I usually have my camera with me and I don't ask that much of my phone's camera.

This is true for the third camera from Apple but it's equally true for those high resolution phones which boast 40 MP. It's just something I'm not that interested in so in this case I would happily sacrifice function over form.

I don't need a new phone, but I'd have in any case to see the device for real to make my judgment. From what these leaks are showing, however, I'm really not liking this camera configuration/setup from a design POV.

I get what people are upset about with how the phone looks overall, I'm just not someone who cares, even remotely. I put a case on the phone, and never, ever look at the back of it.

It's not clear what function this design is trying to accomplish. Plenty of phones by now have been released with triple (and more) cameras. None has such ugly design.

Who cares what the camera bump looks like if the camera is great?

Besides, I seriously doubt those weird-ish white rings remain. It’s just a mock-up.

No need to go crazy.

But of course you will go totally crazy - this is MR forums after all. What else can you expect.

Yup. I suspect plenty of folks here think it looks ugly because every one else says it looks ugly. Just like "the notch" or "notch-gate" — pft! Apple still has some of the nicest industrial design in history. Does anyone think they didn't consider the issues/merits of these details? And we're talking a far better camera in a smaller size than has ever existed. A few lens rings or a small bump to accommodate? Whatevah … I have better things to moan about.

Just so ugly. I'll give the iPhone X Extended Camera Edition a miss. Cheers.

First iPhone where one might get attention for all the wrong reasons. Ah, it takes out great pictures, but many that thing is ugly just put it away where it belongs.

Seems some acid is being used at the spaceship lately :p;)

I don’t like the look of the iPhone from these leaks. I definitely will be keeping my XS Max until 2020.

Maybe Apple is purposely deterring users from upgrading with the ugly. I wonder if the MacBook butterfly keyboard is in the same deterrent bin.

Standing apart with the ugly. New Apple advertisement tag line,

“Beauty is on the inside and that is what counts, unless you have more camera lenses”

:p;):D
