Remarks

1. Long-time member and Moderator emeritus @maflynn has now exceeded 70,000 posts. He also increased his posting rate.
   
2. @TheYayAreaLiving moved into the Top 10, despite a reduction in posting rate. There were no other changes of rank in the Top 10.
   
3. @I7guy had the second-highest posting rate in the Top 50, continuing his approach to the Top 10.
   
4. @eyoungren and @Fishrrman both moved up in rank by 3 places.
   
5. @Clix Pix entered the Top 50 at rank 49.
   
6. There were a lot of +1 changes in rank outside the Top 10, even for members who made no posts. This happened because a member in the Top 10 cancelled their account, moving everyone else up by one.

Info About All Graphs

The horizontal X axes represent dates, and are labeled as YYYY-MM-DD.

The vertical Y axes are automatically determined, and are specific to a graph. The upper and lower limits of each graph are based on the range of values in the graphed data. This means that the steepness of line slopes can't be compared between different graphs.

Colors are also automatically assigned, from a rotating pool of 12 colors. This can make color-to-name conversion ambiguous when more than 12 members are graphed. Use each graph's legend or key on the right to resolve any duplicate colors. The legend is arranged in the same order as the right-most points of each graph.

A dashed line is automatically assigned to inactive users (no posts in the latest measurement period), and a solid line to active users (at least 1 post in latest period). To reduce the clutter, the only inactive user typically shown is @mad jew.


Graphs of Top 50 Post-Counts Over Time

These two graphs show the progression of semi-annual post counts for the Top 50 posters, starting from 2016 July 3rd (2016-07-03). Users who made no posts in the last 6 months are omitted, except for the historical benchmark represented by @mad jew. The member listed last in Group 1 appears in both graphs, with different colors. This overlap is intentional.

Top 50 Posters: In Two Groups

A horizontal graph line (or nearly so) is a member with a low post rate.

A steeply rising slope indicates a high post rate. If the slopes of the segments steepens over time, that user is increasing their post rate. If the slopes flatten, the post rate is falling off.

In the upper graph, we see slight upward increases in the slopes for @maflynn and @Scepticalscribe, who both had slowly decelerating rates over the prior couple of years. @Apple fanboy and @GGJstudios show relatively little change in slope, so they're posting about the same.

@Doctor Q is also maintaining a fairly constant rate. TheYayAreaLiving should pass The Doctor well before the next Statistics Day in July.

In the lower graph, jav6454 shows marked changes in post-rate. First, there's a huge increase in the first half of 2022, then a moderate decrease in the second half. Contrast this with a fairly steady increase by Huntn, and a very slight S-curve for @Clix Pix.

Cluttered Graphs

The first graph below shows all the members from the two graphs above in a single graph. It's more cluttered and difficult to read.

We can still see a marked change in line slope for several members, and the brief but extreme upward slope for TheYayAreaLiving

The second graph, which adds the remaining inactive members in the Top 50, is even more cluttered.

The main reason for showing these is to compare all the slopes together (post-count growth rates). This gives an idea of how much the most prolific posters actually post.

Graphs of Weekly Post-Count Growth

The following graphs show weekly post-count growth for the most prolific 36 users, divided into 3 groups of 12 each. There is no overlap between groups.

There's a gap in the data between 2022-08-14 and 2022-09-14. This was due to a failure in the scripts I'd set up to collect data while I was away.

Each line represents one user's weekly post-count growth, relative to their post count at the start of the measurement period 6 months ago. In effect, each member gets their own "starting count", and the graph shows how their individual post count grows from week to week.

If a member makes a lot of posts for a week, then their line will slope up more steeply. If they make no posts for a week, then their line will be flat. In rare cases, a line may drop a little, which means that some posts were deleted, or a thread was moved to an uncounted forum.

Since the members of each group have different ranges, you can't compare slopes between graphs. A steep line in one graph might not represent the same post rate in another graph. To get a sense of overall weekly growth, we need a single graph with all the Prolific Posters, which is shown after the groups of 12.


Weekly Post Growth

In the upper Group 1 graph, TheYayAreaLiving's post rate is so high it squeezes the other members of Group 1 into a small range with little detail. The green line of @Wxchaser and blue line of @Jinjin are discernible, but other details are jammed together.

The lower graph removes the two most prolific posters, which reduces the top Y value by about 4 times. This lets us see more detail not evident in the upper graph.

• @Jinjin shows few posts before August, a burst during iPhone-release season, then a fall-off;
• @maflynn has little or no posting before iPhone season, then an upward curve;
• @Apple fanboy has a smoothly changing line, with only small variations;
• several members have fairly steady post rates, but with more variation.

In Groups 2 & 3 we see several posters with wavering lines, which means several weeks with fewer posts (flatter), and several weeks with more (steeper).

In the above graph we can compare slopes, which gives a better sense of how prolific the top posters are, compared to everyone else.

This graph omits the most prolific posters. Because the vertical max depends on the range of values graphed, it shows more detail in the lower range.

Welcome to the January version of "Fun With Graphs". We'll see some graphs of things other than the usual semi-annual and weekly posts.


Top 50 Changes: Details

I've included mad jew in this graph, who at rank 11 is no longer in the Top 10.

Despite the late-August gap in data collection, we can see TheYayAreaLiving moved into the Top 10 in early September.

All the other positions in the Top 10 look pretty stable. @Apple fanboy is closing on @C DM, and looking back at Table 4, we see he's projected to pass C DM by July.

In this graph, mad jew is at the top, not the bottom, and we see some active and inactive members below him.

Two members are moving closer: @Apple_Robert and @I7guy. Again referring to Table 4, I7guy is projected to pass Apple_Robert by July. Both are also projected to pass mad jew.

This graph is a kind of simplified summary of the prior two, with an additional user. I've kept the top three posters, and the prolific TheYayAreaLiving closing on them. I've also kept mad jew as a rough marker between inside and outside the Top 10. Apple_Robert and I7guy are the two active members closest to mad jew. Finally, the second-most prolific Wxchaser is advancing, but still well below mad jew's benchmark.


Selected Prolific Posters: One Year

This graph shows several of the more prolific posters from the past 6 months, and extends the oldest date back to about a year ago. It also uses 2-week intervals.

I chose a year because it gives a broader view of posting patterns. I omitted the most prolific posters to avoid the "squeezed" effect seen in earlier graphs.

We see marked differences in line shape between java6454 and the more regular Apple fanboy. Notice Jinjin's high post-rate around the iPhone intro, and lower rate otherwise. We also see Wxchaser appear in June, when he first surpassed 5000 posts and we started collecting data.

Finally, maflynn's lull between about March and September is visible as a flat line, which begins arcing upward in early September.

For that matter, when I first joined this forum, I never thought to imagine that I would feature in these collections of fascinating statistics.

I also find it fascinating to note the differences in post rate (i.e. active participation) at varying times; in my own case, it very closely reflected stuff that was going on in my life, both personal and professional.

Those sharply angled lines (represented periods of sustained posting) occurred during the time I was responsible for my mother's care, - when I was at home - and during the period immediately following her death.

Periods where I was less active frequently reflected time when I was working abroad, or otherwise occupied.

Delighted to see @Clix Pix put in an appearance in the Top 50, and impressed, as always, by @Apple fanboy's smooth progress here.

Just wow.

Well, when my mother was terminally ill, during the final four months of her life - a time when I was at home, and needed to be readily available as I had complete responsibility for her care - (and we had state supports, plus an absolutely wonderful Filipina carer who lived with us for six years, providing superb care to my mother), I fully realised that - precisely because my whole life had become confined to the proverbial four walls of my house - my participation in MR (which was one lifeline of several for which I was, and remain, profoundly grateful) and, thus, my post rate, both increased, and quite considerably, at that.

Somewhat similar conditions prevailed during the first year of Covid, with a somewhat similar result.

But, I could never conceive of arriving at such a post rate, no matter what circumstances prevailed in with my personal, or professional, lives.

Never mind.

The world - including the online world, - and our own personal place and space within it, remains eternally fascinating.

Indeed. Why do people always assume posters are male? Is it because it’s a technology site? Of something else? Isn’t the chances a 50/50 split it you don’t know?

Actually that would make a really interesting graph. The gender of the top 50 posters? I’m guessing more male than female, but who knows.
