What metric do you use to justify colors that are old and boring? It's a color on an iPhone, not a car or house. I understand that Apple refreshes their color lineup typically on an annual basis, but what defines a color getting old and boring? It Seems all their iPhone colors are sold or used one way the other based on what someone appreciates.
And how many people put the phone in a case anyway? I do, so I don't care what color the phone is.
I would make a color choice based on whatever is most popular on resale. But hey thats just me.
Different strokes.

It may be a good business move for Apple, but it's not the greatest customer facing move for consumers. From a consumer perspective it just looks like an unnecessary money grab. "This phone offers fast charging, but we'll be charging you $50 to use it." Looks even worse when other competitors include it with the phone. But hey, why would Apple give it away when Apple fans have shown time and again no matter how much they may complain they're generally going to open the wallet.
Or just use your iPad charger or just buy one from another manufacturer or yes just buy one from apple. Options.

Hmm, for me this news will really be a question of seeing how the three colours come together both Front and Back in final production? I've seen images of dummy/mock-up "iPhone 8" models in two very different shades of Brown and Copper. An image in one of these colours depicted the phone as having a White fascia in its function area and bezels. Make up your own minds about the likelihood of that possibility. When I first heard last year about the iPhone 7 becoming available in Red, I thought to myself "how awful!" When I actually saw the Blood Red after its release, I thought it looked quite okay, even though it wouldn't be my personal choice of colour.

For all sorts of reasons I'm once again feeling very lucky that I'll be purchasing this time next year. ;)

Because production starts so late which I don't understand but it's psychological hype to make you want it more.

Agree that you do not understand.
I am working in production and there are many issues to be worked out for new products until everything can be produced without flaws. There is a lot of new technology Apple is incorporating into these phones.
All of that has to be tested and functionally verified.

Apple does not need psychological hype. Whoever wants these will buy them as fast as they can be made.

BTW: 50 million iPhones production a year means 5,700 iPhones per hour at 24 hour production 24/7. It's not as if they are making egg and cheese sandwiches.

Good point. Many iPhone users obviously will purchase cases to protect your device and a collars ultimately are negated. It's just the color option comes at the time of the purchase of what they want.

We'll see about this. With Rose Gold being so popular, its hard to square this with what we see in people's hands during the last couple of years.

I'd like a midnight dark blue color...

But anyway, if supplies are genuinely short, they may as well price the iPhone 8 at some ludicrous $1000+, as they will still definitely sell every single one the factories can produce. So why not make a load of money?! Heck, price it at $1500. They'll still sell every single one. The board must love Tim Cook and his ability to make money.

If Apple prices it too high, there's a good chance carriers and retailers will have to offer significant discounts, perhaps as soon as December to move stock. By February for sure.

Apple's upcoming 2017 iPhones, including the "iPhone 8," the iPhone 7s, and the iPhone 7s Plus, will be available in just three colors -- black, silver, and gold -- according to a new investor note shared today by respectable KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Kuo previously said the iPhone 8 would be available in a limited number of colors, but made no mention of its two companion devices. His three color list seemingly matches up with an iPhone 8 dummy model leak that we saw earlier this week, but one of the dummy model shades displayed was more of a copper than a gold, so it's not clear if it's an accurate depiction of the colors we can expect.

If Apple does plan on introducing the iPhone in just three hues this year, we won't be seeing rose gold or the multiple shades of black that were available in the iPhone 7.

According to Kuo, all three iPhone models expected in 2017 will also support fast charging, but he warns that consumers may need to purchase a Type-C power adapter to enable faster charging. The current iPad Pro has a similar feature -- it uses the MacBook's $49 29W USB-C power adapter for fast charging.

Kuo now believes Apple will begin production verification tests on the iPhone 8 in late August, leading to mass production in mid-September, which is earlier than Kuo's previous estimates that suggested mass production might not begin until the middle of October.

With mass production starting earlier, Kuo expects Apple will announce all three iPhone models simultaneously in September, with plans to launch them all on the same date. The OLED version will be in short supply, though, with Kuo forecasting shipments of 2-4 million units in the third quarter.Though a September launch is expected, supplies of the iPhone 8 may be constrained until the first quarter of 2018 due to an expected high demand. Still, Kuo's latest prediction is a rosier outlook than we've seen in the past, as some former rumors suggested Apple could potentially announce the iPhone 8 and then delay its launch until October or November.

This is all done deliberately as a layup so people go nuts for the iPhone 8 Pro or iPhone PLUS size next year with a much larger 6.3" OLED display sourced from Samsung the display they sourced from Samsungs Note Series and same size. Wait for Jet Black and ROSE Gold Plus size Models which larger devices sell more.

Jet Black
Matte Space Grey
and ROSE Gold
Will make Booring Drab colors look awful

Or just use your iPad charger or just buy one from another manufacturer or yes just buy one from apple. Options.
1. Requires ownership of an iPad. Not a given.
2. Still requires an expenditure of funds.
3. Yes there are options. One of them being including a fast charger with the phone. It's the most customer-centric option. There are two pov's being discussed. Business - better for Apple to charge*. Customer - better to have the charger included.

Exactly. Apple knows this and will use their customers wallets hard to make as much profit as they can as long as they can get away with it.
*Charging for something just because you can isn't always the smartest option. Sometimes it's better to make the customer feel like you care for them instead of their wallet. Charging extra for a fast charger says I care for your wallet.

There is no reason for Apple not to offer this phone with a rainbow of colours to select from. No other reason than pure laziness.

Besides the color fiasco, I am still very very disappointed about that camera wart, which is getting bigger and bigger, like skin cancer...

Foxconn: We can make 4 million iPhone 8's by Christmas

Tim Cook: What should we sell it for?

Apple marketing exec:
If you price it at $600, you'll sell out within minutes of it going on sale. Waiting lists will be high. You'll still be selling out every single one you can make by next summer.
If you price it at $800, you'll sell out within minutes of it going on sale. Waiting lists will be high. You'll still be selling out every single one you can make by next summer.
If you price it at $1000, you'll sell out within minutes of it going on sale. Waiting lists will be high. You'll still be selling out every single one you can make by next summer.
If you price it at $1200, you'll sell out within minutes of it going on sale. Waiting lists will be high. You'll still be selling out every single one you can make by next summer.
... etc ....

Tim Cook: But we can't get in-screen TouchID to work. The camera is still an ugly hump. We've gone with a slippery-as-soap design instead of something comfortable to hold, and we''ve got some serious script work for the keynote to do on how we back-track from previously writing off wireless charging.

Phil: yup.. that's how brave we are.

Tim: so we'll still sell them all, despite the forums knowing how poor our innovation is?

Apple marketing exec: yup.. every single one the factory can churn out.

Tim: ker-ching!!!!!!!!!!

Craig: wanna see some pics of me at the karaoke bar?

Jony: what about my all-aluminium design....

[Tim exits the meeting]

Rose Gold and Red were intended to drive sales for minor refreshed phones: 6S and 7. They were not popular colors.

Apple doesn't need boutique colors like blue or grey as the OLED iPhone is expected to be in high demand regardless.

The iPhone 6/Plus was Apple's most successful family. It launched with three colors and Apple is hoping they can duplicate that success.

exactly - every year I wait around November for the free upgrades - carrier will let you swap almost any previous iPhone for the new one

I am going to be pissed off if there is no matte black color, yet they are going to do a stupid rose gold color. Why rose gold anyway? Its a horrible color.

What people tell Tim or more to the point what he would like to hear and ultimately what will happen is most likely two different scenarios here.

Another year, another delay averted. Amazing. And all the analysts, blogs and news sites that reported Apple would run into delays because of reason X gets another free pass and will do exactly the same thing next year.

Surprisingly, people here will forget and call for Tim Cook's head and post angry comments about how Apple can no longer execute, etc.

No Space Gray?

This is disappointing. Not that I thought Apple would re-introduce space gray, but a part of me was holding out hope that they will.

I looks like I'll be keeping my matte black 7 and space gray SE for another year at least (not dropping $1k+ on the iPhone unless T-Mobile offers some sweet promo to upgrade).

A shame, I've really gotten to like the Space Gray color across my Macbook Pro, iPhone SE, and someday Apple Watch.

We should be getting
The 7/7+'s Jet Black was clearing the guinea pig of the new finish we'll see on the new iPhone(s) across all colors.

Therefore, it makes sense we won't have 2 black options this year. It does seem odd they're axing rose gold altogether, though?

Rose gold is the tackiest color in all of electronics. In 10 years it's going to be like wood grain finish. People are going to shake their heads in disbelief, wondering how they fell victim to such a gaudy, tacky color choice.
